If an external hard drive is unreadable, says it needs to be formatted, or appears as RAW, don’t format or initialize it. Stop using it, avoid repair scans if it may be physically failing, and recover files to a different healthy drive. The right next step depends on whether you use Windows or macOS and whether the problem appears to be logical or physical.
First, protect the data
Until you know what has failed, treat the drive as the only copy of its files. New activity can overwrite recoverable data, and repeated scans can put additional stress on a drive whose condition is uncertain. Microsoft advises users to minimize or avoid computer use when trying to recover files because new files may overwrite lost data: Windows File Recovery guidance.
- Dismiss any prompt to format the disk. A format prompt does not prove that the files are gone.
- Do not initialize the drive, create a new partition, or save recovered files onto it. Microsoft warns that creating a partition after data loss reduces the chance of successful recovery.
- Avoid repeatedly disconnecting, reconnecting, or rescanning the drive.
- If the files are irreplaceable or the drive may be failing, stop DIY attempts and seek a professional assessment.
Check whether the drive is detected—without repairing it
Look at whether the computer sees the device, but do not interpret detection as proof that the drive is healthy. In Windows, it may appear with a drive letter but show as RAW or prompt you to format it. Western Digital says a RAW external drive can involve a damaged partition table and may have logical or hardware-related causes, including media errors or a failing drive: WD guidance on RAW external drives.

Seeing the physical device while its volume is unreadable can help distinguish a detection issue from a volume that is not mounting normally, but it does not diagnose the underlying cause. Avoid clicking repair options until you have considered the value of the data and the possibility of hardware failure.
#1 Best Overall
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Choose the next step based on the warning signs
| What you observe | Safer next step |
|---|---|
| The drive is detected, stays connected, and shows no obvious physical problems | Consider a file-recovery route for your operating system and filesystem. Save output to a different healthy drive. |
| The drive clicks, repeatedly disconnects, is unusually slow, or makes the computer hang | Stop further DIY scans and consider a professional recovery service. These are cautious triage cues, not a definitive diagnostic test. |
| The data is irreplaceable, regardless of the visible symptoms | Consider a professional assessment before trying recovery or repair operations. |
Manufacturer guidance confirms that media errors or a failing drive can be associated with a RAW volume, but no remote check can establish the condition of your particular disk. If hardware failure is plausible, more attempts are not automatically safer.
Recover files on Windows with Windows File Recovery
Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery is a command-line app available through Microsoft Store. It can attempt to recover files from local storage devices, including external drives and USB devices; it does not recover files from cloud storage or network shares. The source and destination must be different drives. See Microsoft’s current instructions and syntax before running a command, since the correct source, destination, paths, and filters depend on your setup.

Choose a mode for the filesystem and situation
| Filesystem and situation | Microsoft’s recommended mode |
|---|---|
| NTFS; files deleted recently | Regular |
| NTFS; files deleted a while ago, after formatting, or from a corrupted disk | Extensive |
| FAT or exFAT | Extensive |
Identify the filesystem before choosing a mode; Microsoft says recovery from non-NTFS filesystems is supported only in Extensive mode. Do not run a recovery command with the damaged drive as the destination. If you need storage for recovered output, use a separate healthy drive with enough free space for the files you expect to retrieve.
The support page covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025; the presence of instructions for Windows 10 does not mean that the operating system remains in normal support.

What Mac users should know about Disk Utility First Aid
Disk Utility’s First Aid checks and repairs certain errors related to disk formatting and directory structure. It is a repair tool, not a dedicated undelete workflow, and Apple does not specifically say it recovers files from an unreadable external drive. Apple also cautions that “Disk Utility can’t detect or repair all problems that a disk may have.” Read Apple’s First Aid instructions before proceeding.
If your priority is recovering files and the disk may be physically failing, consider professional recovery before running First Aid. Apple’s prescribed order for First Aid is to run it on each volume, then each container, then the storage device itself. If Disk Utility reports that the disk is about to fail, Apple says to back up data and replace the disk; it cannot be repaired.

Apple’s guidance for a disk that cannot be repaired includes backing up as much data as possible, reformatting, and restoring from a backup. Reformatting is not a first step when your priority is retrieving files that are not backed up.
Why repair commands are not the same as file recovery
Recovery tools try to retrieve files; repair utilities attempt to fix filesystem structures so a volume may work again. That difference matters when the files are more important than making the disk mount.
Best Value
- SATA-Only Compatibility: Fits 2.5" and 3.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs. NOT compatible with SAS, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, NVMe PCIe, or IDE/PATA drives. Note: some 4TB+ 3.5" drives with non-standard PCB height may not seat correctly — verify your drive's physical dimensions before purchasing.
- Tool-Free Setup: Slide, click, and go—no tools or screws needed. Swap drives in seconds without hassle.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) with UASP: USB Type-A host connection — a USB-C to USB-A adapter is required if your computer only has USB-C ports (not included). Transfer speeds up to 625 MB/s theoretical maximum; typical real-world speeds are 100–180 MB/s for HDDs and up to 400–500 MB/s for SSDs.
- External Power Required: Includes 12V/2A AC power adapter — a wall outlet is needed (not bus-powered via USB). Aluminum shell with internal ABS shock-absorbing tray for durability and heat dissipation.
- Plug & Play — Windows 10/11, macOS & Linux: No drivers needed. LED indicates power and activity status. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not accessible through the USB bridge. Hard drive not included.
- Windows CHKDSK: Microsoft says
/ffixes filesystem errors, while/rincludes/f, locates bad sectors, and attempts to recover readable information. Microsoft also warns that FAT repairs usually change the allocation table and can sometimes cause data loss. See Microsoft’s CHKDSK documentation. - macOS First Aid: It checks and repairs certain formatting and directory errors, but Apple says it cannot detect or repair every disk problem.
Neither tool should be presented as a risk-free first move when the only copy of important files is on the drive. Prioritize recovery or professional assessment before attempting repairs that change filesystem structures.
When to use a professional recovery service
Consider professional hard drive recovery if the device shows possible physical failure, repeated reads fail, or the files are too valuable to risk experimenting on. A specialist can assess the drive and explain available options, but no recovery outcome or success rate can be guaranteed here.
Western Digital says it does not provide data recovery services itself and directs users to recovery partners. It also says any agreement is between the user and the provider and disclaims warranties for those services. Check a provider’s coverage, service terms, and availability in your location; a referral does not establish a particular provider’s quality. See WD’s RAW-drive guidance and WD’s recovery-service information.
After recovery: verify files before reusing the drive
- Save recovered files to a different, healthy drive—not the affected disk.
- Open important recovered files to check that they are usable.
- Make another backup before attempting to reuse the old drive.
- If the disk was reported as about to fail, replace it rather than relying on it again.
There is no universal test in the cited guidance that certifies a repaired external drive as safe for continued use. If its condition remains uncertain, keep the recovered copy elsewhere and do not trust the old disk as the sole storage location.
