Neither an extension cord nor a power strip is automatically safer. An extension cord temporarily moves power from a wall receptacle to a device; a power strip gives several devices access to the same receptacle. Neither increases the electrical capacity of the outlet or circuit. Choose based on the devices’ electrical demand, the product’s rating and instructions, its condition, and where it will be used. For major appliances and heat-producing devices, plug directly into a wall receptacle and follow the appliance instructions.

What is the difference between an extension cord and a power strip?

An extension cord is a flexible cord with receptacles molded into it, used to temporarily extend the reach of a receptacle. A power strip has multiple receptacles in a separate strip or body. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) distinguishes the products by this construction; the practical difference is what each is meant to solve: reach versus the need for more plug-in points.

Neither product creates more electrical capacity. A power strip can make it easier to connect several devices, but all of them still draw power through the same wall receptacle and circuit. Adding receptacles is not the same as adding capacity. An extension cord changes where a device can be plugged in; it does not provide a second independent supply of power. Likewise, a strip’s number of sockets does not tell you how much electrical load the outlet or circuit can safely support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when deciding whether either product fits the job. If the problem is a temporary distance between a receptacle and a suitable device, an appropriately rated extension cord may address it. If several suitable, low-power devices need nearby plug-in points, a properly rated power strip may be appropriate. If the real need is more outlets as a regular part of how a room is used, neither product is a substitute for permanent wiring.

Which one is safer for your device?

Safety depends on the connected load and the product, not the category name. A correctly rated, undamaged extension cord can be suitable for a temporary reach problem. A properly rated power strip can serve suitable low-power equipment when plugged directly into a wall receptacle and used as instructed. Either can be hazardous if overloaded, damaged, used in the wrong environment, or installed contrary to its instructions.

Question Extension cord Power strip
What problem does it solve? Temporarily extends the distance between a receptacle and a device. Provides several receptacles at one location.
Does it add capacity to the circuit? No. No; it adds outlets, not available power.
How should it connect? Use only as a temporary connection, following its rating and instructions. Plug directly into a permanently installed wall receptacle; do not chain it to another strip or an extension cord.
Typical suitability A temporary connection for a device whose demand is within the cord’s rating and for which the cord is approved. Suitable low-power equipment within the strip’s rating and instructions.
Important limitation Not a substitute for permanent wiring; keep it uncovered and out of prohibited routes. Not a way to run multiple high-power devices from one receptacle.

OSHA’s November 18, 2002 interpretation describes listed relocatable power taps as appropriate for low-power equipment and cautions against high-power loads. It says a UL-listed tap should connect directly to a permanently installed receptacle, rather than to another tap or an extension cord. That interpretation addresses a workplace question and is not a complete residential rulebook; follow current applicable requirements and the product’s instructions. OSHA quoted 29 CFR §1910.303(b)(2): “Listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.”

In practice, do not choose by outlet count, cord appearance, or a feature label alone. A thick-looking cord is not proof that it has the right rating for a particular device. A strip with many sockets still shares the supply available at its one wall connection. Surge protection, where present, also does not make an otherwise unsuitable load or setup appropriate. Check the product’s actual rating, recognized testing-laboratory mark where applicable, intended location, and instructions.

Choose by the device, rating, and location

1. Check the device’s demand against the product rating

Before connecting equipment, check its label or instructions for its electrical demand and compare that with the cord or strip’s rating. Do not assume that a product is suitable because its plug fits, it has a thick-looking cord, or it has many outlets. The product’s own rating and instructions govern. If you cannot establish that the intended load is within the rating, do not use that setup.

For a strip, consider the devices that would be connected at the same time, not only the fact that each one has a plug that fits. Several devices connected to one strip draw from the same receptacle and circuit. For an extension cord, consider the device it will serve and whether the cord is approved for that use. In both cases, use the product only within its stated limits. Do not guess at an allowable load from the shape or thickness of a cord, the number of open sockets, or the device’s size.

If the device’s label or instructions do not make the demand clear, or the cord or strip rating is unclear, pause rather than trying the connection to see whether it works. A plug fitting into a receptacle establishes physical compatibility, not that the product is suitable for the load. When instructions conflict or you cannot confirm compatibility, follow the manufacturer’s directions and seek qualified advice instead of improvising.

2. Match the product to the environment

Use an outdoor-labeled extension cord outdoors, and make sure its rating fits the load. Keep it clear of snow and standing water. An indoor product is not made suitable for outdoor use simply by placing it under cover. In any location, do not cover a cord with a rug or other material that can prevent heat from escaping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think about the whole route, not just the point where the device plugs in. Do not run cords through walls, ceilings, or floors, through doorways, or beneath rugs or furniture. A cord hidden under a rug may be harder to inspect and can have heat trapped by the covering. A cord routed through a doorway or under furniture can also be exposed to conditions that may damage it. If the route cannot stay visible, uncovered, and out of prohibited locations, find another arrangement.

Outdoor use requires attention to conditions as well as the label. Keep the cord clear of snow and standing water, and do not assume that a covered plug or a sheltered location changes the cord’s rating. If weather or placement makes the connection wet, buried, or difficult to inspect, do not use that arrangement. Follow all location restrictions in the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Check compatibility, listing, and condition

Confirm that the plug, receptacle, and grounding arrangement match the device and that the product bears a recognized testing-laboratory mark where applicable. Read and follow its instructions. Inspect the full length of a cord and the body and receptacles of a strip before use. Cracks, fraying, exposed or damaged insulation, discoloration, or unusual heat are reasons to stop using the product—not to tape it up and continue.

Inspection is not a one-time step at purchase. Before use, look over the cord and plug, and check that the strip’s body and receptacles show no damage. If a cord becomes hot or visibly damaged, stop using it and replace it. Tape or a patch is not a substitute for intact insulation. Do not continue because the device still operates or because the damaged area seems small.

For either product, read the manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on a general rule of thumb. The listing or labeling and its instructions matter to the product’s intended use. A model’s warning, maximum load, location restrictions, or other directions may rule out a setup that seems convenient. If the instructions do not authorize the intended use, choose another solution.

4. Decide whether the need is temporary

Extension cords are for temporary use, not permanent wiring. If a room regularly needs cords to reach devices, or a household depends heavily on them, the safer long-term answer may be additional receptacles. ESFI recommends having a qualified electrician inspect the situation and add outlets as needed.

A power strip is also not a permanent-wiring fix. It can make a temporary arrangement of suitable low-power equipment more convenient, but it does not expand the outlet or circuit’s capacity. If the same room repeatedly requires multiple strips, extension cords, or awkward routing to make ordinary use possible, treat that as a sign to reconsider the layout. Ask a qualified electrician to assess the need for outlets rather than linking products together or leaving temporary cords in place indefinitely.

When neither option is the right choice

Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle, according to ESFI. ESFI also recommends only one heat-producing appliance at a time in a receptacle. Do not use an extension cord or power strip to make a high-power appliance fit an inconvenient outlet location. Follow the appliance maker’s instructions, including any requirement for a dedicated connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This guidance is especially important when convenience tempts you to add more connections. A strip’s extra sockets do not create extra capacity, and an extension cord does not make a remote receptacle appropriate for every load. If an appliance’s instructions call for direct connection, or if the device is a major appliance or heat-producing load, do not use a strip or extension cord to work around the location. Arrange for an appropriate wall connection instead.

Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, a warm or discolored receptacle or cover plate, unusual noise from a receptacle, a burning odor, or a tingling shock can indicate an electrical problem. Stop using the suspect setup and consult a qualified electrician rather than trying a different cord or strip to work around the symptom.

These signs are not a reason to keep testing different combinations of devices. Unplug or stop using the suspect setup if it is safe to do so, and do not put another strip or cord in its place as a workaround. Have a qualified electrician assess the receptacle or circuit. If a product itself is hot or damaged, stop using it and replace it rather than treating the warmth or damage as normal.

Safe setup: a practical checklist

  • Use an extension cord only when necessary and temporarily.
  • Connect a power strip directly to a wall receptacle and use it only within its rating and instructions.
  • Do not overload either product, and do not connect strips to strips or cords to cords.
  • Keep cords out of walls, ceilings, floors, doorways, under rugs, and under furniture. Do not cover them in a way that traps heat.
  • For outdoor use, choose a cord labeled for outdoor use and keep it away from snow and standing water.
  • Stop using any cord or strip that is damaged or hot. Replace it; damaged insulation should not be patched with tape as a substitute.
  • Plug major appliances directly into a wall receptacle and follow the appliance instructions.

Before connecting anything, work through the choices in order: identify whether the need is reach or additional receptacles; identify the device’s demand and intended use; check the cord or strip’s rating, listing, instructions, and location suitability; then inspect the product and the route. If any part of the setup fails those checks, do not use it. This sequence helps prevent a common mistake: treating a product that physically fits as a product that is electrically suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After setup, keep the cord visible and uncovered so it can be checked, and do not add devices beyond the rating. If the setup will be outdoors, verify the outdoor label and keep it clear of snow and standing water. If the need continues beyond temporary use, or the receptacle shows warning signs, stop relying on the cord or strip and address the underlying wiring or outlet need.

Product-specific recall warning

On March 5, 2026, CPSC warned about specified CCCEI power strips with 6-, 10-, or 15-foot cords. CPSC said those products lacked supplementary overcurrent protection and could pose a fire risk if overloaded. The agency reported sales on Amazon from April 2024 through January 2026 and said a remedy became available March 26, 2026. This warning concerns the specified products; it does not establish that power strips as a category are unsafe. Check current CPSC recall information for a specific model before buying or continuing to use it.

The warning is model-specific, so do not apply it as a blanket judgment about every power strip. When considering a particular product, verify its exact identity against current CPSC recall information and follow the remedy instructions if it is affected. A listing mark and suitable rating are important checks, but they do not replace checking whether a specific model has been recalled or whether its instructions suit the intended use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an extension cord safer than a power strip?

Neither category is inherently safer. An appropriately rated, undamaged extension cord can serve a temporary reach need; a power strip can serve suitable low-power equipment when directly connected to a wall receptacle and used as instructed. The load, rating, condition, location, and instructions determine whether a setup is suitable.

Does a power strip give me more electrical capacity?

No. It adds receptacles, not capacity. Devices connected to it still draw from the same wall receptacle and circuit, so use it only within its rating and instructions.

Can I plug a power strip into an extension cord or another power strip?

No. Plug a power strip directly into a permanently installed wall receptacle. Do not chain strips together or connect a strip to an extension cord.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use an extension cord outdoors?

Only use an extension cord labeled for outdoor use, with a rating appropriate for the load. Keep it clear of snow and standing water, and follow the manufacturer’s location instructions.

Can I use a cord or strip for a major appliance or a heat-producing device?

ESFI recommends plugging major appliances directly into a wall receptacle and using only one heat-producing appliance at a time in a receptacle. Follow the appliance instructions; do not use a cord or strip to work around a required direct connection.

What should I do if a cord or strip is damaged or hot?

Stop using it and replace it. Do not tape or patch damaged insulation as a substitute. If a receptacle is warm or discolored, a breaker trips frequently, lights flicker, the receptacle makes unusual noise, there is a burning odor, or you feel a tingling shock, stop using the suspect setup and contact a qualified electrician.

What if my home regularly needs extension cords?

Frequent temporary-cord use may indicate that the room needs permanent receptacles. ESFI recommends having a qualified electrician inspect the situation and add outlets as needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose by the job, not the product label: an extension cord is for temporary reach, while a power strip provides receptacles but no added circuit capacity. Match the load to the product rating and instructions, keep cords in good condition and out of unsafe routes, and use neither for major appliances or heat-producing loads when direct wall connection is called for. If temporary cords are becoming routine, ask a qualified electrician about permanent outlets.
