If Extend Volume is unavailable in Windows Disk Management, the usual cause is that the unallocated space is not directly to the right of the volume you want to grow on the same disk. Check the disk layout, administrator permissions, and file system before changing partitions. These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Why Extend Volume is unavailable
Windows Disk Management can extend a volume only when its requirements are met. Microsoft’s volume-extension guidance says the unallocated space must be immediately after the volume and on the same disk. A partition between the target and the free space blocks the built-in extension, and space on another disk cannot be combined with the target this way.
- Space is not adjacent: another partition lies between the target volume and the unallocated region.
- Space is on another disk: free space elsewhere in the computer does not meet the same-disk requirement.
- Disk Management is not elevated: administrator permissions are required.
- Unsupported file system: Microsoft documents NTFS and ReFS for this procedure; other file systems cannot be extended through it.
- Disk partition style limits capacity: a disk larger than 2 TB must use GPT to use capacity beyond 2 TB.
Check the disk layout and requirements first
Open Disk Management as an administrator
- Right-click Start and select Disk Management.
- If it does not open, search for
diskmgmt.mscfrom the taskbar and choose Run as administrator. - In the Disk Management window, identify the disk and volume you intend to extend.
Confirm that the free space is in the right place
In the lower disk map, look for the black Unallocated region. It must be on the same disk and immediately to the right of the target volume. If any partition is between them, Disk Management cannot extend the target into that region. Do not assume that unallocated space shown on another disk can be used.
Check the file system and disk size
In Disk Management, check the target volume’s file system. Microsoft’s documented extension procedure supports NTFS or ReFS. If the volume uses another file system, the documented alternative is to move or back up its files and reformat it; reformatting erases the volume, so treat it as a data-destructive operation rather than a quick fix.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
If the disk is larger than 2 TB and you need to use capacity beyond 2 TB, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance requires GPT. Changing a disk’s partition style can affect access to its data and partitions. Back up important files and consult Microsoft’s instructions for changing partition style before proceeding.
Choose a fix based on what you find
The space is adjacent and the requirements are met
- In Disk Management, right-click the volume you want to grow and select Extend Volume.
- Follow the wizard and choose how much of the available unallocated space to add. The wizard defaults to all available space, but you can select a smaller amount.
- Review the selection and finish the wizard.
Another partition is between the volume and the free space
There are three practical choices. The right one depends on whether you need to preserve the intervening partition and whether you need one larger volume.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Keep the partition and use the space separately: create a new volume in the unallocated space. This leaves the existing partition layout intact, but the new space will have its own drive letter rather than enlarging the target volume.
- Remove the intervening partition: first move or back up any files on it. Deleting a volume deletes its files. Identify the partition before acting; do not delete a recovery, system, or data partition unless you understand the consequences.
- Move the intervening partition: Microsoft lists third-party partitioning software that can move volumes as another option. That can address the adjacency issue, but it does not fix other causes such as missing administrator permissions or an unsupported file system. Microsoft does not endorse a specific product in its guidance.
You prefer PowerShell
Microsoft documents an elevated PowerShell method that checks the supported size and then resizes the partition. The example below uses drive letter C; replace it with the correct letter for your target volume. Verify the drive letter and disk layout before running either command.
- Open PowerShell as an administrator.
- Check the supported size for the target volume:
$size = Get-PartitionSupportedSize -DriveLetter C
$size
- If the reported maximum is the size you want, resize the partition to that maximum:
Resize-Partition -DriveLetter C -Size $size.SizeMax
The maximum-size example uses all size supported by the partition. If you do not want the maximum, do not run that resize command unchanged; use the size you intend to set and confirm the correct syntax in Microsoft’s PowerShell instructions.

Before deleting, formatting, or converting anything
- Back up important files before deleting a partition, reformatting a volume, or changing a disk’s partition style.
- Check the disk map carefully so you do not mistake a recovery, system, or data partition for the partition you intend to change.
- Do not delete a partition merely to make the unallocated region adjacent unless you are willing to lose the files on it.
- If preserving the existing partitions matters more than having one larger volume, creating a separate volume avoids changing the intervening partition.
What to do if the option is still greyed out
Recheck the requirements in order: Disk Management is elevated; the target uses NTFS or ReFS; the unallocated space is immediately to its right on the same disk; and, when using capacity beyond 2 TB on a disk larger than 2 TB, the disk uses GPT. If one of those conditions is not met, installing partition software alone will not resolve every cause: a partition mover addresses the non-adjacent-space case, not permissions, file-system support, or disk capacity configuration.
Microsoft’s Disk Management overview covers the Windows 10 and Windows 11 interface and entry points. The extension and troubleshooting guidance cited above also applies to certain Windows Server editions; the steps here are for Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktop users.
