In Express, parse the signup request body first, verify the CAPTCHA token with its provider second, and run account-creation logic only after verification succeeds. For Cloudflare Turnstile, that means a server-side Siteverify request; a token supplied by the browser is untrusted until that check passes.
Where CAPTCHA verification belongs in an Express signup flow
Express runs middleware in the order it is registered. For a signup POST, put the body parser before CAPTCHA verification and the account-creation handler after it:

If the app uses a router, mount the verification middleware on the signup route or router rather than imposing it on unrelated requests. A middleware must either end the response or call next(); verification should call next() only when the provider confirms the token.

What the server must verify for Turnstile
Turnstile requires a server-side validation call. Without it, displaying the widget does not protect account creation. The browser submits a token, commonly in the cf-turnstile-response field; that value remains untrusted input until validated.

- Read the configured token field after the body parser has run. Require a string and reject values longer than 2,048 characters.
- Send the token and the server-held secret to Cloudflare’s Siteverify endpoint:
https://challenges.cloudflare.com/turnstile/v0/siteverify. The endpoint accepts JSON or form-encoded request bodies and returns JSON. - Proceed only if the response reports success. When your integration uses Turnstile action and hostname values, compare them with the expected signup action and hostname rather than accepting arbitrary context.
Keep the secret out of browser code. Cloudflare also documents optional remoteip and idempotency_key parameters; use an idempotency key when safely retrying a verification request.
Write the middleware as a fail-closed gate
Set a finite timeout for the Siteverify request. A rejected token, missing or malformed input, non-success response, invalid JSON, HTTP error, timeout, or network failure must not fall through to createUser. For a signup gate intended to prevent unverified accounts, fail closed: withhold next(), return an appropriate error, and let the user retry or refresh the widget when the failure is recoverable. Do not silently bypass verification during a provider outage.

Keep client-facing errors generic; do not expose the secret or sensitive provider details. Log operational failures safely, apply rate limits to reduce validation flooding, and handle temporary network issues with a defined retry policy. Cloudflare’s client-side guidance describes error and expiration callbacks that can help users recover with a fresh token.
Account for Express 4 versus Express 5
Check the deployed Express major version before relying on rejected promises to reach error handling. Express 5 forwards a rejected promise or thrown error from promise-returning middleware automatically. In Express 4, pass asynchronous errors to next() explicitly, using try/catch with next(err) or a promise .catch(next). Register error-handling middleware after routes; its signature is (err, req, res, next).

Test the gate before enabling production signups
Use Cloudflare’s Turnstile test sitekey and matching test secret in development. These are separate from production credentials; production secrets reject dummy tokens.
- Confirm a valid test token reaches the account-creation path.
- Confirm missing, malformed, expired, reused, and provider-rejected tokens do not create an account.
- Simulate a timeout and provider error; verify that neither case calls the creation handler.
- Check that a user can recover by retrying with a fresh widget token.
Turnstile tokens are single-use and valid for 300 seconds (five minutes), according to Cloudflare’s server-side validation documentation, last updated September 16, 2026. Replayed or expired tokens fail validation. These token rules are specific to Turnstile; other CAPTCHA providers can use different endpoints, request fields, and token behavior.
