To track errors in an Express checkout API, let Express route failures to error-handling middleware, send diagnostic details to a restricted monitoring destination, and return a deliberate, stable response to the client. First confirm whether the service runs Express 4 or 5: Express 5 forwards rejected promises from promise-returning handlers automatically, while Express 4 requires asynchronous errors to reach next(err).
How Express 4 and Express 5 pass errors to your handler
The monitoring workflow depends on errors reaching Express’s error-handling chain. A synchronous throw in a route is caught by Express. For asynchronous work, the major-version difference matters:
| Version | Asynchronous failure behavior | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Express 4 | Errors from asynchronous functions must be passed to next(err). Promise rejections need an explicit forwarding path. |
Check that each promise-based route forwards rejection, either directly or through a wrapper. |
| Express 5 | Rejected promises and thrown errors from promise-returning route handlers and middleware are forwarded to error handling automatically. | Confirm the deployed Express major version and that handlers return their promises. |
Forwarding promise failures in Express 4
A route can catch a rejected operation and pass its error to Express:

});
If the application uses an async wrapper instead, verify that it catches rejected promises and calls next(err). Do not assume Express 5 behavior in an Express 4 service.

Returning rejected promises in Express 5
In Express 5, a promise-returning handler can let a rejection propagate to the error middleware:
app.get('/checkout/:id', async (req, res) => {
const checkout = await loadCheckout(req.params.id);
res.json(checkout);
});
Register the error-handling middleware after the routes and middleware whose errors it should handle. Avoid forwarding the same error more than once: Express warns that calling next() with an error multiple times can trigger its default error handler even when a custom handler is installed.
What the error handler should do—and what it should not
Exception capture and client response formatting are separate jobs. The handler should send diagnostic information to a restricted logging or monitoring destination, then return a response designed for the API. Do not put raw exception text, stack traces, SQL details, tokens, or other internal data in a public checkout response.

app.use((err, req, res, next) => {
if (res.headersSent) {
return next(err);
}
// Send diagnostics to a restricted monitoring or logging destination.
// Apply your service's redaction and data-handling rules there.
res.status(500).json({ error: 'Internal server error' });
});
The example deliberately uses a generic 500 response; an API may map known, expected failures to other safe responses. Keep that mapping intentional rather than exposing an exception’s message as the response. Apply appropriate access controls and redaction to captured request context as well: checkout requests can contain sensitive information.
Respect response state
Check res.headersSent before attempting to write an error response. If headers have already been sent, delegate with next(err) instead of trying to send a second response. A failure during streaming can occur after output begins; Express’s default handler may close the connection in that situation.
Understand the default handler
When an error reaches Express’s default handler, it uses err.status or err.statusCode when the value is in the 4xx or 5xx range, and otherwise uses 500. In production, the default response omits the stack trace. That fallback does not make it safe for custom middleware to return raw error messages.

Keep detailed error pages out of production APIs
Express describes its errorhandler middleware as development-only. It can return a standard Error’s stack in an HTML or text response and expose internal object details. Use it only in an appropriately controlled development setting, not for public production checkout responses.

Choose a monitoring path
Once errors reach the right boundary, choose how to capture and route telemetry. A hosted SDK and an OpenTelemetry-based design are different instrumentation approaches; neither choice replaces safe API error handling.
| Approach | What it offers | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted error monitoring | A vendor SDK can provide Node.js and Express instrumentation for application errors and performance data. | Check support for your Express and Node.js versions, capture behavior, stack and source context, grouping and search, request or trace correlation, alert controls, data handling, and cost at expected volume. |
| OpenTelemetry JavaScript | Vendor-neutral APIs and SDKs can generate and collect telemetry in Node.js and browser JavaScript, with a separately selected collector and backend. | Choose and operate the collector and backend, then verify which errors your instrumentation captures and how they correlate with traces and requests. |
Hosted SDKs: verify setup against the current version
Sentry’s Node.js SDK documentation covers Express instrumentation, making it a technically relevant example of a hosted-monitoring path. Its setup is SDK-version-sensitive: follow the current official instructions for the installed SDK and initialize instrumentation early enough to observe application activity. The documented relevance does not establish a ranking of event-search interfaces, pricing, or other vendors.

OpenTelemetry: separate instrumentation from the backend
OpenTelemetry JavaScript documents traces and metrics as stable and logs as in development; status labels can change, so check the documentation for the version you adopt. Instrumentation provides a vendor-neutral route, but a collector and backend still need to be selected. The choice alone does not guarantee that every desired exception is captured automatically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to evaluate event search for checkout incidents
Do not choose on the promise of “error tracking” alone. Use an incident-relevant checklist when evaluating a hosted monitor or an OpenTelemetry backend:
- Runtime and framework support: Confirm compatibility with the service’s actual Node.js and Express versions.
- Capture reliability: Establish which failures are automatic and where the application must explicitly report an error.
- Diagnostic context: Check whether stack and source context are useful for the way the application is deployed.
- Search and grouping: Determine whether the team can find related events and filter by useful request or trace context.
- Data handling: Review where telemetry is stored, who can access it, and how sensitive request data is handled.
- Operations: Assess alert controls and the work required to run a collector or maintain SDK configuration.
- Cost: Estimate total cost at the service’s expected telemetry volume.
These are evaluation criteria, not a product ranking or a claim that any particular search workflow has been tested with a checkout system.
Quick Recap
A practical rollout sequence
- Confirm the deployed framework version. Check the service’s dependency and deployment state, then use the matching Express 4 or Express 5 error-propagation model.
- Make asynchronous errors reach Express. In Express 4, forward rejected promises to
next(err); in Express 5, ensure promise-returning handlers are actually returned by the route. - Install the error boundary after the relevant routes. Record diagnostics through the chosen monitoring or logging path, with appropriate access restrictions and redaction.
- Return a deliberate API response. Use a stable, safe response body and status policy rather than exposing raw exception details.
- Handle errors after output begins. If
res.headersSentis true, pass the error onward withnext(err). - Validate the monitoring setup. Confirm that representative failures reach the intended destination with useful context, and that clients receive only the designed response.
