If your Expo app appears to ignore a Supabase URL, returns a permission error, cannot find a new table, or gets stuck after browser-based sign-in, the visible symptom may point you at the wrong layer. Check environment loading, SQL privileges, schema-cache refresh, and the mobile redirect path before replacing credentials or rewriting the client.
1. The app still uses an old Supabase URL or key
Changing an environment variable does not guarantee that the running app has loaded its new value. Expo’s Supabase guide recommends reloading the app after writing the values. If the old value remains, stop the development server and start it again with npx expo start.
For cloud builds, check which EAS environment the build uses. A build or update reads values from its selected environment, so a value changed in another environment will not necessarily appear in the installed app.
In Expo, values intended for app code use the EXPO_PUBLIC_ prefix. The current Expo guide uses EXPO_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_URL and EXPO_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_PUBLISHABLE_KEY. These values are public in the client bundle; do not put a database password or secret key in the app.

2. A 42501 error can mean a missing SQL grant
A permission error can lead you to inspect row-level security (RLS) first, but an RLS policy and a SQL privilege grant do different jobs. In Expo’s documented example, a missing policy produces an empty array, while a missing table grant produces an error whose code is 42501.
For example, the guide shows this grant for reads by the anon and authenticated roles:

grant select on public.todos to anon, authenticated;
Do not add this grant automatically: choose privileges that match the access your application is meant to allow, and configure the relevant RLS policy as well. Use the distinction to narrow the diagnosis: an empty result and a 42501 failure are not interchangeable symptoms.

3. A new table may not be in the schema cache yet
If a query immediately after creating a table returns Could not find the table 'public.todos' in the schema cache, that message does not by itself prove that the table name is misspelled or the migration failed. Supabase caches database schema, and Expo’s guide says that the cache refreshes automatically. Retry after it refreshes; the guide does not specify a fixed wait time.

4. Browser auth succeeds, but the app never receives the redirect
OAuth, a magic link, signup confirmation, or password reset can complete a browser step and still fail to return control to the mobile app. In that case, credentials may not be the problem: these flows need a configured route back to the app.
- Check the app’s custom URL scheme. The scheme must be configured for the app that will handle the return link.
- Check Supabase Auth’s redirect configuration. Ensure the redirect URL used by the flow is allowed in the Auth settings.
- Test in the runtime you intend to ship. Compare behavior in Expo Go, a development build, or the standalone app rather than assuming they share identical redirect behavior.
Supabase’s native mobile deep-linking guide explains the app-return path. Individual reports describe an Expo Go redirect involving an exp:// IP URL and a problem with an Expo Linking method (Supabase Auth issue #2039; Supabase issue #31047). Those reports are specific cases, not proof of one universal Supabase defect; confirm the documented configuration and reproduce the behavior in your target build before classifying it as a product bug.

Choose one Expo auth setup path
The current Expo Supabase guide uses expo-sqlite for local session persistence and Expo-prefixed public environment variables. Supabase’s separate React Native Auth quickstart lists AsyncStorage and react-native-url-polyfill. These are different setup paths. Follow the instructions that match your Expo runtime, and check compatibility before combining snippets from the Expo guide and the Supabase Expo React Native quickstart.
