daily-react-native-player is an Expo audio package its author, Mark Melton, says he built for background playback, mutable queues and incremental speech audio without a commercial-license gate. It is intended for native iOS and Android apps—not web—and the author’s stated requirements are Expo SDK 57+, React Native 0.86+ and the New Architecture. Treat those version and licensing details as the author’s claims and verify the current package materials before adopting it.
What problem is the package meant to solve?
Melton says he created daily-react-native-player for his Daily Bible – Offline & Audio app. His account describes a need for audio that keeps playing when the screen locks, a queue that can accept or change items during playback, headset and lock-screen controls, and optional ambient audio alongside speech. He says an existing React Native track-player option did not fit his project’s commercial-license needs; that is his reason for building an alternative, not an independent comparison of the packages.
The package is an audio playback engine, not a text-to-speech system. Melton puts the boundary simply: “The player does not run the model. It consumes URLs.” An app or upstream service must generate speech and provide audio URLs for playback.
What does the author say it supports?
Queue playback and controls
The described queue can be modified while audio is playing. Playback actions from lock-screen, notification, Control Center and Bluetooth controls are sent to JavaScript, leaving the app to decide what an action such as “Next” means. For a Bible app, for example, the app could interpret it as the next verse rather than the next track.

Audio formats and silence
The article names HLS video-on-demand streams and WAV, MP3 and M4A audio. It also describes silence as a queue item: SilenceMediaSource on Android and cached PCM WAV on iOS. The stated design rationale is to avoid timer drift when the operating system is busy; the article does not report a measured comparison.
Ambient audio and playback rate
For speech mixed with ambient audio, Melton says a second player is created lazily and does not request audio focus or own Now Playing. He identifies Media3 on Android and AVFoundation on iOS as the native playback engines. The feature list also includes playback-rate changes that preserve pitch.
How do you add it to an Expo app?
The author’s article gives this install command and says the Expo config should include the plugin name. Because the package’s current manifest and README were not independently confirmed, check their current installation guidance before running these steps.

Build and test the native iOS and Android apps, including playback with the screen locked and the control surfaces your app needs. This is a native-module workflow; the package is not described as having a web player.

What compatibility and licensing claims need checking?
The author states a minimum of Expo SDK 57+, React Native 0.86+ and the New Architecture, with iOS and Android support. These requirements are version-sensitive. Confirm compatibility against the current package manifest, release notes and README before changing an app’s Expo or React Native version.
Melton describes the project as MIT-licensed and commercially usable without a license gate. The license file was not independently reviewed, so this is not legal advice or independent confirmation of the package’s current license. Read the license distributed with the version you plan to use and check whether its terms fit your app.

The article’s feature descriptions do not establish that every behavior works on every operating-system version, device vendor, build setup or app lifecycle state. In particular, its note about continuing after an app is killed is conditional on the operating system’s policy; it should not be read as a guarantee that playback survives a user force-quitting an app. The author calls the project’s work “production hardening,” but that phrase is not independent evidence of production readiness.

Confirm platform coverage: the described package supports iOS and Android and has no web player.

Review the current maintenance and security information. The repository security policy identifies version 0.1.x as supported, asks users to report vulnerabilities through private GitHub advisories or the maintainer contact in package metadata, and says there is no bug bounty. Check the repository policy and package metadata for current details.
