Liquid-metal thermal interface material (TIM) generally does not dry out by evaporation. Gallium-based alloys have very low vapor pressure under normal use, so a hardened or crusty sample usually reflects solidification, oxidation, or a reaction with the cooler—not liquid simply disappearing. The alloy, temperature history and substrate determine which explanation fits.
What “dry” liquid metal usually means
Conventional thermal paste can dry as volatile components leave the compound. A gallium-based liquid-metal TIM behaves differently. A 2025 paper in the Journal of Microelectronics and Electronic Packaging states: “Due to their composition, metals will not dry out over time or degrade in their performance due to temperature changes; however, most metal TIMs are very stiff.”
That does not mean a used application will always remain shiny and mobile. A gray film, crust, stain or immobile patch can result from:
- Solidification: the alloy crossed its liquid-to-solid range.
- Oxidation: an oxide skin formed at an exposed surface and disrupted wetting.
- Interfacial reaction: gallium reacted with copper or another substrate to form intermetallic material.
- Redistribution: pumping, pressure or surface texture moved the liquid away from part of the contact area.
The same 2025 paper warns that oxidation can degrade thermal contact and reduce TIM service life. A solid-looking sample therefore needs inspection rather than a diagnosis based on appearance alone.

Why a gallium alloy can turn solid
Liquid-metal TIMs are usually low-melting alloys. Adding indium and/or tin lowers the melting point so selected formulations remain liquid near room temperature. Their high thermal conductivity and low interfacial resistance make them attractive for transferring heat, but they are electrically conductive and require careful containment.
Phase behavior varies by alloy. Manufacturer data for one formulation, Indalloy 306, lists 68.5% gallium, 21.5% indium and 10% tin, with a liquidus of 19 °C and a solidus of 10 °C. Those are product-specific values, not universal limits for every liquid-metal TIM. If the material falls below its relevant solidus, it can freeze; warming it above the applicable liquidus can remelt it.

- Thermal Conductivity: Grizzly thermal paste has extremely high conductivity, perfect for even the most demanding configurations.
- Long Action: Conductonaut PS5 liquid metal has high thermal conductivity and is stable even with extended use. However, it CANNOT be used on aluminum components due to the risk of corrosion.
- Exceptional Results: Using this thermal compound will immediately lower temperatures, reduce equipment noise, and improve user comfort.
- Value for Money: Conductonaut is the best thermal paste for experienced users who want to enhance their system's thermals, as it provides up to 10 times more thermal conductivity than other thermal greases.
Supercooling can hide the phase change
Gallium can remain liquid below its normal melting point when a suitable nucleation event does not occur. A 2023 study observed smooth, oxide-covered gallium staying liquid in cold water. Inserting a copper wire triggered rapid freezing. This explains why two apparently identical samples can behave differently after cooling: surface oxide, confinement and a nucleating object can determine when solidification starts.

Galinstan and other formulations
A 2019 Materialia study experimentally examined melting and solidification of eutectic gallium-indium-tin (Galinstan). Galinstan, gallium-indium mixtures and commercial InGaSn products should not be treated as interchangeable. Identify the exact alloy before using a melting-point claim to explain a solid sample.

- [High thermal conductivity]: thermal conductivity: 79 W/MK. It guarantees that heat generated from the CPU or GPU is dissipated efficiently.
- [Top performance]: conductor is recommended for users who are looking for a top performance product with best heat dissipation.
- [Warning]: Electrically conductive liquid metal is for experienced users, beginners can learn to use it on youtube or use non-electrical conductive thermal paste instead.
- [Note]: This thermal grease must not be used with aluminum heatsinks!
What happens at the cooler or heat spreader
Gallium can form intermetallic material with copper. Over time, that reaction can change the interface and make the residue look more like a bonded or hardened layer than a pool of liquid. Oxide growth can also reduce wetting and increase thermal resistance.
Aluminum is incompatible with gallium-based liquid metal. Gallium can attack aluminum, so do not apply it to bare aluminum heat spreaders or cold plates. An Indium Corporation product sheet notes that anodizing aluminum can overcome the incompatibility, but the anodizing must be intact and the particular product’s instructions must permit that use.

How to troubleshoot a hardened application
- Identify the alloy. Find the product name and technical data sheet. Gallium, Galinstan and InGaSn products have different liquidus and solidus ranges.
- Check the temperature history. Compare the lowest temperature the assembly experienced with the alloy’s published phase range. Include storage, transport and powered-off conditions.
- Inspect the interface. Look for an oxide film, gray staining, pitting or material that appears bonded to copper. These clues point toward oxidation or reaction rather than evaporation.
- Check the substrate. Confirm that the contact surface is compatible and that no bare aluminum is present.
- Assess electrical containment. Liquid metal can short nearby circuitry if it leaks or spreads. Inspect insulating barriers and surrounding components before powering the device.
- Replace only with a verified product. Search for “liquid metal thermal paste,” then confirm the alloy, cooler/base material, containment method and application procedure supplied by the manufacturer.
Safety and compatibility decisions
| Factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Electrical behavior | Liquid-metal TIM is electrically conductive; prevent leakage onto components and contacts. |
| Base material | Do not use on bare aluminum. Copper may form intermetallic material with gallium. |
| Phase stability | Use the specific alloy’s liquidus and solidus, not a generic gallium melting point. |
| Surface condition | Oxide skin and nucleation surfaces can change wetting and freezing behavior. |
| Service condition | Pressure, confinement and repeated heating or cooling can redistribute or transform the interface. |
Does solid mean the TIM has failed?
Not automatically. A solid layer may still be making thermal contact, while an oxidized or reacted interface can perform poorly even if some liquid remains. Check temperatures against the system’s normal readings, inspect the contact pattern during service, and follow the TIM maker’s removal and reapplication instructions. If the alloy cannot be identified, the substrate is damaged, or liquid may have reached circuitry, replacement and a compatibility check are safer than trying to liquefy the residue in place.

The key distinction is physical: ordinary use does not make gallium-based liquid metal evaporatively “dry,” but cooling, oxidation, nucleation and substrate reactions can leave it solid or hardened.
