“Expand the tree” usually means opening a node in a tree view so its hidden child nodes become visible. In search algorithms, the phrase has a different meaning: selecting a node and generating its successor states. The surrounding context tells you which operation is meant.
What does “expand the tree” mean in a tree view?
A tree view organizes items in parent-and-child branches. Expanding a collapsed node reveals its child items; it changes what is displayed, not the underlying relationships. Microsoft describes expanding a tree node as displaying the next level of child nodes.
The scope depends on the control. An expand action may reveal only the selected node’s immediate children, or it may open every descendant branch. For example, MATLAB’s expand(parent) behaves according to whether parent is a tree object or a node object: with a tree object, it shows top-level nodes; with a node object, it displays that node in an expanded state. What does “expand a node” mean in a search algorithm?
In a search algorithm, expanding a node means processing a state to generate its successor states. Those successors are added to the search frontier—the nodes available for future exploration. This is an algorithmic step, not simply making hidden items visible in an interface. Duke University’s search-tree lecture slides describe expanding the tree one node at a time and identify choosing which frontier node to expand next as a key decision.

How the search strategy affects the next node
The search strategy determines which frontier node is expanded next. Depth-first search chooses a deepest node; breadth-first search chooses a closest or shallowest node. The strategy affects the order in which the state space is explored, rather than the meaning of “expand” itself.
How to tell which meaning applies
- Tree-view interface: the topic is branches, folders, menus, or visible child items. Expansion reveals items in the display.
- Search algorithm: the topic is states, successors, a frontier, or exploration order. Expansion generates successor states.
If a command or control is involved, check whether it expands one node, reveals a particular level, or expands all descendants. The exact behavior varies by application; the phrase alone does not identify a specific button, shortcut, or command.
