Executive MBA (EMBA) rankings are weighted comparisons of selected indicators, not universal quality scores or forecasts of what any individual student will earn. They can show how programs perform on reputation, career progression, participant experience and diversity under a publisher’s rules. They cannot tell you, by themselves, whether a schedule fits your job, a campus suits your location, a curriculum matches your goals, or the degree will produce your personal return on tuition.

What an EMBA ranking actually tells you

A ranking converts several data points into one ordered table. The publisher chooses which indicators to collect, how to normalize them, how much each category counts and which programs qualify for inclusion. A program’s position therefore answers a bounded question: how it scored under that particular framework in that particular edition.

That distinction matters because two credible tables can disagree without either being a mistake. They may cover different countries, use different survey populations, include different programs or assign different weights to reputation and career results. Treat the displayed position as a starting point for investigation, then inspect the components and verify details with each school.

QS describes its bespoke approach as seeking to highlight programs with “strong links to industry, positive career returns, and offer value for money.” That is a description of the framework’s intended emphasis, not a guarantee that every graduate receives a specific promotion, salary increase or financial return.

How the current QS Executive MBA framework is weighted

QS groups its current EMBA indicators into five sections. The section weights add to 100 percent, so the overall result reflects the publisher’s selected inputs and those assigned weights.

QS category Weight in overall score Visible components in the methodology
Employability and Outcomes 30% Employer reputation accounts for 30% within this category.
Research and Discovery 25% Academic reputation accounts for 25% within this category.
Career Progression 20% Mean percentage salary increase (10%) and percentage of graduates promoted (10%).
Executive Profile 15% Mean work experience (5%), mean managerial experience (5%) and the percentage of the class with C-suite experience (5%).
Class Diversity 10% Student gender ratio is shown as 5% in the displayed table. The retrieved methodology extract does not expose the other five percentage points, so they should not be guessed.

The table reveals what a headline rank compresses. A high position may reflect strong employer and academic reputation, reported salary movement, promotion rates, experienced participants or diversity measures in different proportions. Looking only at the order hides that mix.

Reputation measures

QS uses its Global Employer Survey and Academic Survey alongside program-specific information. Employer reputation is intended to capture how hiring organizations view the program, while academic reputation reflects views gathered through the academic survey. These are perception measures, not direct evaluations of every class, professor or student service.

Career progression measures

The career category uses a mean percentage salary increase and the percentage of graduates promoted. A mean can conceal wide variation: participants may start in different industries, countries, currencies and seniority levels. The ranking does not establish that a particular applicant will receive the reported average change.

Executive-profile measures

Work experience, managerial experience and C-suite experience describe the seniority and professional background of a cohort. They can help you understand who may be in the classroom, but they are not a measure of teaching quality or proof that a participant without C-suite experience will obtain an executive appointment.

Class-diversity measures

QS displays student gender ratio as one component. Because the available methodology extract does not identify the remaining five percentage points in this category, a reader should not infer that the table captures every dimension of diversity, such as nationality, industry, age or socioeconomic background.

Where QS gets its data—and what it does not survey directly

The QS EMBA ranking combines academic and employer reputation surveys with school-submitted program data and specific indicators. QS’s FAQ answers “Not directly.” when asked whether it surveys alumni as part of the ranking. Alumni may be contacted if they have become academics or hold hiring responsibility, but alumni information does not directly build or inform the ranking.

Consequently, the QS table is not a direct alumni-satisfaction poll. It does not, on its own, tell you how students rate teaching support, career services, workload, classroom culture, travel demands or the usefulness of a particular elective. Those questions require conversations with current participants and recent graduates and a review of the program’s own disclosures.

Which programs can appear in the QS table?

Eligibility rules shape the visible universe before scores are calculated. QS requires a qualifying accreditation—AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS or EPAS—or at least three QS Stars. A program must also have an average class size of at least 20 and at least one graduating class.

  • A program absent from the table may fail an eligibility rule, may not have supplied required data or may fall outside that edition’s scope.
  • “Not ranked” therefore cannot casually be translated into “inferior.” It may simply mean that the program is not comparable within that table’s inclusion rules.
  • Check accreditation, class size and graduation history separately when comparing a newer or smaller EMBA.

Edition year, collection cycle and movement

Ranking positions are edition-specific. QS says its research begins in November and publication occurs in April. The page lists the following collection dates for the 2026–2027 cycle: institution data from September 15 through December 31, 2026; survey-contact submission from September 15, 2026 through January 15, 2027; and academic and employer survey windows in February and March 2027. Those dates describe that listed cycle, not a permanent annual timetable for every publisher.

The most recent QS result covered here is the 2025 global edition. Its top five were:

2025 QS global EMBA position Program

QS reported that Warwick rose five places into the 2025 top 10, primarily after an improvement in employer reputation. Yale rose two places with improvements in mean work experience and student gender ratio. These examples show how a table can move when measured indicators change; a small movement does not establish a similarly large change in teaching, student experience or an individual’s outcome.

Why different publishers produce different tables

Scope is not the same everywhere

QS publishes global, regional and joint-program tables. A global list and a regional list answer different geographic questions, even when they use a similar label. A joint program may appear under a different structure from a stand-alone degree, and a national table may omit schools outside its country.

Included programs can change the order

Poets&Quants’ 2025–2026 U.S. composite required a stand-alone U.S. program to be ranked by at least one of three agencies. It compared 72 programs, up from 63 the prior year, and noted that coverage varied among the contributing lists. That is a rule for that composite, not a count of all U.S. or global EMBA programs.

Weights and inputs differ

One publisher may emphasize employer and academic reputation; another may give more influence to compensation, international exposure, student surveys or research. An older GMAC/mba.com guide describes Financial Times methodology for full-time MBA programs, including 40% compensation and 20% internationalization. Those are dated full-time MBA figures, not a current Financial Times Executive MBA formula, and should not be transplanted into an EMBA comparison.

What an overall rank leaves out

An overall score cannot encode every constraint that determines whether a working professional can complete a degree. Investigate the following independently:

  • Schedule and delivery: module dates, weekend or weekday format, online work, travel frequency and attendance rules.
  • Location: commuting time, visa requirements, residency obligations and access to the cities or industries relevant to your next move.
  • Curriculum: core subjects, electives, assessment style, leadership coaching, international modules and the freedom to tailor projects.
  • Total cost: tuition plus travel, accommodation, materials, employer sponsorship conditions, lost work time and financing costs. A ranking position is not a personal return-on-investment calculation.
  • Cohort fit: industries, functions, seniority, nationalities, class size and the kinds of peer relationships you want to build.
  • Personal outcomes: a published mean salary increase or promotion rate does not predict your result. Industry, geography, prior role, employer policy and career timing all affect what happens after graduation.

A practical method for using rankings without overreading them

  1. Define the decision first. Write down your target role, industry, geography, preferred completion date, maximum travel and total budget. These are filters, not ranking indicators.
  2. Choose a comparable table. Record the publisher, edition year and scope—global, regional, national or joint-program. Do not compare a 2025 global position with an undated regional position as if they were one scale.
  3. Check inclusion rules. Confirm accreditation or other eligibility requirements, class-size thresholds and whether the program has graduated a class. Treat an omission as an eligibility or coverage question until verified.
  4. Open the component scores. For QS, examine reputation, career progression, executive profile and diversity rather than relying on the single ordinal position. Note which indicators matter most for your objective.
  5. Inspect the data’s definition. Ask whether a figure is a mean, a percentage, a survey perception or school-submitted data; identify the graduating cohort and reporting period; and check the currency and geography behind salary figures.
  6. Verify program facts directly. Request the current calendar, attendance policy, complete fee schedule, class profile, curriculum and employment reporting methodology from each school. Ask current participants how the schedule works in practice.
  7. Build a weighted personal shortlist. Score only your own criteria—fit, cost, schedule, location, curriculum and cohort—then use the ranking as contextual evidence. Do not let a small rank difference override a material constraint.

A comparison worksheet you can reuse

Field What to record Why it matters
Publisher and edition Name and year, such as QS 2025 Prevents mixing cycles and methodologies.
Geographic scope Global, regional, national or joint program Defines which alternatives were eligible to appear.
Included programs Schools shown and notable omissions Reveals coverage differences behind the order.
Inputs and weights Reputation, career, experience, diversity and other published measures Shows what the score rewards.
Your constraints Schedule, location, curriculum, cost and cohort Keeps personal fit separate from publisher scoring.
Evidence to verify Calendar, fees, class profile and outcome definitions Turns a rank into an informed application decision.

Bottom line for applicants and readers

Use an EMBA ranking to narrow a large field and to ask sharper questions about reputation, career indicators, participant seniority and diversity. Read the edition year, scope, eligibility rules and component weights before interpreting the order. Then make the decision with program-level evidence: schedule, location, curriculum, complete cost and cohort fit. The ranking is useful when it remains a transparent comparison tool; it becomes misleading when treated as a universal quality score or a promise about your own career.
