To keep a picture attached to a spreadsheet record, insert it with Excel’s Place in Cell command. If the image is hosted at an HTTPS URL, the IMAGE function is another option. Both put the picture in a cell rather than leaving it as a floating object, but they use different workflows and have different compatibility limits.
Choose the right method
| Method | Best for | How it works | Key constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Place in Cell | Pictures selected from your device or a supported image source | Use Excel’s picture-insertion controls, paste a clipboard image through the cell menu, or convert an existing floating picture. | Microsoft documents the feature for Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024. Supported insertion formats are JPG/JPEG, PNG, BMP, ICO, WEBP, TIF/TIFF, and non-animated GIF. Microsoft’s Place in Cell instructions. |
IMAGE function |
Images available at a suitable HTTPS URL | Enter a worksheet formula with the image URL and optional alt text and sizing arguments. | Microsoft lists Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024 on Windows and Mac, plus Excel on iPhone and Android phones. WEBP is unsupported in Excel for the web and Android. Microsoft’s IMAGE documentation. |
In Excel for the web, use Insert > Pictures, then choose Place in cells or Place over cells. This web interface has its own labels and differs from the desktop ribbon path. The workbook may need to be in Editing View. Microsoft’s Excel for the web instructions.
Insert a picture with Place in Cell
Insert from a file or picture source
- Select the destination cell.
- Choose Insert > Illustrations > Pictures > Place in Cell.
- Choose a source, such as a device file, Stock Images, or Online Pictures; select the picture and choose Insert.
This is the direct choice when you have the image file or can select it from one of Excel’s offered sources.

Paste an image from the clipboard
Right-click the destination cell and choose Paste Picture in Cell. Ordinary Ctrl+V pastes a clipboard image over the cells by default, so use the cell’s context menu when you want the picture inside the cell.

Convert a floating picture
Select the existing floating picture, then choose Place in Cell on the Picture Format tab. If the picture spans multiple cells, Excel places it in the cell at the picture’s top corner. To turn a cell picture back into a floating picture, use the picture’s context menu.
Insert several pictures
Select multiple image files before inserting. Excel starts at the active cell and places the pictures down the column. Choose an empty destination area first: batch insertion overwrites values in the cells it uses.
Display a URL-hosted image with IMAGE
Microsoft describes IMAGE as inserting pictures into cells from a source location along with alternative text. Its syntax is:

Rank #3
The required source is an HTTPS URL to an image file. The other arguments are optional:
alt_textdescribes the image for accessibility.sizingcontrols how the image fits:0fits it in the cell while preserving its aspect ratio;1fills the cell while ignoring its aspect ratio;2keeps the original size, which may exceed the cell boundary; and3uses custom dimensions.heightandwidthset the custom dimensions in pixels whensizingis3.
For example, =IMAGE(A2,"Red bicycle",0) uses the HTTPS image URL stored in A2, supplies alternative text, and fits the image in the cell while maintaining its proportions. The image host must make the file accessible to Excel; a URL that does not resolve to an accessible image may not display.

Check client and image compatibility
The two Excel methods do not have identical support. For Place in Cell, Microsoft lists JPG/JPEG, PNG, BMP, ICO, WEBP, TIF/TIFF, and non-animated GIF. For IMAGE, Microsoft lists BMP, JPG/JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, ICO, and WEBP, with WEBP unsupported on Excel for the web and Android. Consult the relevant Place in Cell or IMAGE documentation if a format or command is unavailable in your client.
For Excel for the web, Microsoft says a Bing image result is unsupported if its host does not use HTTPS or the URL is invalid. In Excel generally, external-content settings can block linked images; Excel may return #BLOCKED! when access is blocked.

Add alternative text
Give pictures meaningful alt text so screen-reader users can understand what they show. For a picture already in the sheet, right-click it, choose View Alt Text, and enter a description. For a formula image, use the optional alt_text argument, as in the example above. Microsoft explains the accessibility impact in its Place in Cell guidance and IMAGE documentation.
Google Sheets uses a separate IMAGE workflow
Google Sheets also has an IMAGE function for displaying an image from a URL. Google documents the URL argument as either a quoted URL or a cell containing the URL text. Its formula workflow is separate from Excel’s ribbon commands; follow Google’s IMAGE function instructions for Sheets.
