Moving an Excel job log to a dispatch app is a change in how work is assigned and tracked, not just a file import. A dispatch workflow can connect each job to an owner, schedule, and live status so office staff and technicians can work from the same plan. Before importing everything, clean the workbook, check the app’s import rules, test a small batch, and decide when the app becomes the authoritative record.
What a dispatch app adds to an Excel job log
An Excel log can store job details, but it does not by itself give dispatchers and field staff a shared workflow for assignment and status. Depending on the product, a dispatch app may add a schedule or board, staff availability, job reassignment, mobile updates, and map or route tools.
For example, FieldTempo describes CSV import for clients, properties, and jobs, along with a live dispatch map and route optimization. Joblogic describes drag-and-drop scheduling, status-based views, reassignment, and mobile status updates. These are vendor-described capabilities, not proof that adopting an app will make service faster or reduce costs. The value depends on the fit between the software and the way your team plans and performs work.

Clean and standardize the workbook
Use one row per job and consistent identifiers and values. Include the customer and service-site details, address, job type, priority, requested time window, assigned person, current status, and notes. If the app keeps customers or properties as separate records, prepare those records instead of assuming every detail belongs in the job row. This is practical preparation advice; there is no universal spreadsheet format that every dispatch app accepts.

Check the import rules before changing the file
Ask the vendor which file types are supported, which columns are required, how customer, property, and job records relate, what date and time formats work, how duplicates are handled, and whether completed or historical jobs can be imported. FieldTempo says its CSV import covers clients, properties, and jobs. DispatchPing describes uploading Excel or CSV lists, mapping columns, and reviewing the mapping before proceeding. Those workflows are product-specific examples, not guarantees about other apps.

Map columns and validate the records
Match each workbook column to the corresponding app field. Look for missing addresses, unmatched technician records, duplicate jobs, and invalid dates before committing the import. DispatchPing describes column mapping and pre-plan validation on its site; treat that as a vendor-reported workflow and confirm the steps in the product you choose.

Test a representative batch
Import a small selection that reflects the work your team actually handles: an ordinary job, an urgent one, a recurring job if you use them, and a record with incomplete information. Compare the imported details with the spreadsheet, then check that assignment and status changes make sense to dispatchers and technicians. A pilot is a risk-control step, not a guarantee that the full migration will be error-free.

Set rules for the transition period
If the team temporarily uses both systems, name the authoritative record, decide who can edit each one, and set a date for ending spreadsheet updates. Reconcile changes during the overlap; otherwise, dispatchers may work from conflicting schedules or job details.

Train for the office workflow and the field update
Agree on who creates jobs, who assigns them, how urgent work changes the plan, and which status technicians should update. Joblogic describes mobile status changes that notify office staff. FieldTempo describes native iOS and Android apps and offline actions that sync after connectivity returns. Check that the behavior you need is available in the selected product and plan.
What to compare when choosing a dispatch app
Start with the work your team needs to coordinate, not the longest feature list. Joblogic’s scheduling page also identifies schedules, resource availability, dependencies, automation, progress monitoring, reporting, integrations, and mobile access as selection considerations.

DispatchPing
DispatchPing describes a planning workflow that accepts Excel or CSV jobs and technician lists, maps fields, validates data, generates a plan for review, and exports handoff files. Its displayed comparisons about planning time and route reductions are marketing claims, not independently verified outcomes, so they should not be used as expected savings for your business.
Do technicians need a separate tablet?
Not necessarily. A compatible phone may be enough for viewing schedules and updating jobs, depending on the app and the information technicians need to see in the field. FieldTempo describes native iOS and Android apps, but that does not establish a separate tablet as a requirement. Check the chosen app’s device and operating-system requirements, and start with hardware your team already uses where it meets them.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The vendor pages cited here describe possible workflows and features; they do not establish a guaranteed reduction in planning time, travel, or operating cost. Results will depend on factors such as data quality, scheduling practices, team adoption, and product configuration. Features, integrations, and plan availability can also change, so verify current terms with the vendor before selecting an app.
