To add an overall average line to an Excel chart, calculate the mean in a worksheet cell, repeat that result in a helper column for every chart category, then add the helper column to the chart as a new data series. Because the series contains the same value at every category, it appears as a horizontal reference line and recalculates when the average formula changes.

1. Calculate the average of the values in your chart

First identify the exact numeric observations represented in the chart. In a blank cell outside the chart data, enter =AVERAGE(range), replacing range with the cells containing those observations. For example, if the plotted values are in B2:B13, enter:

=AVERAGE(B2:B13)

Use the values you intend the line to represent—not category labels, unrelated measurements, or a broader data range. The formula returns one mean value for the selected observations.

2. Create a helper series with the same value for every category

Add a column beside the chart’s existing data and name it Average. Enter a reference to the cell containing the mean in the first row of that column, then fill it down once for each category. If the mean is in E1, the formula can be:

The dollar signs make the reference absolute, so it continues to point to E1 as you copy the formula down. The helper column should have one repeated average value for every category shown on the chart.

3. Add the helper column to the chart

  1. Select the chart.
  2. Choose Chart Design > Select Data. In versions or platforms with different controls, use the chart’s equivalent data-selection control.
  3. Add a new data series using the helper column as its values. Include the category labels so the average values align with the chart’s existing categories.
  4. Confirm the change. Excel should plot the added series alongside the original data.

Microsoft’s chart guidance covers creating and editing charts in Excel, though menu labels and controls can vary by platform and version: Creating charts from start to finish and Create a chart from start to finish.

4. Make the average line easy to identify

Format the new series so it reads as a reference, not another measured category:

  • Choose a contrasting line color or style.
  • Remove markers if they clutter the chart.
  • Keep or edit the legend entry so it says Average, or add a nearby annotation.

Check the vertical axis assignment as well. The average series must use the same value scale as the measured data. If Excel places it on a secondary axis, change the series or axis settings so the line’s height represents the actual mean on the chart’s scale.

Why the helper-series method works

A chart plots the average as a value at each category. Since every helper-series value points to the same average cell, Excel connects equal-height points into a horizontal line. When the source values change and the average formula recalculates, the helper cells and line can update too, provided the chart includes the full helper range.

Average line, trendline, or moving average?

Chart element What it represents How it behaves Typical setup
Overall average line The mean of the selected observations One constant reference level Calculate the mean, repeat it in a helper series, and add that series to the chart
Trendline A line or curve fitted to describe a data pattern Changes across the chart to represent the fitted pattern Select the chart, then choose Chart Design > Add Chart Element > Trendline and choose a type; options depend on the chart and Excel version
Moving average A smoothed view of changing observations Varies along the chart as it smooths fluctuations Choose a moving-average trendline when available and set its period

Microsoft describes a moving average as a way to smooth fluctuations and make a pattern or trend clearer: Predict data trends. It is not the same as a single overall mean. Microsoft’s instructions for trendlines and moving-average lines are at Add a trend or moving average line to a chart. The trendline option may appear only when a chart with multiple data series is selected without an individual series selected.

If the line is missing or appears at the wrong height

  • Check the chart’s source range: Make sure the new series includes the average values and the matching category labels.
  • Check the helper formulas: Confirm each row refers to the average cell and that the reference is absolute if you copied the formula down.
  • Check the axis: The series should use the same vertical value scale as the data. A secondary axis can make a correct average appear misleadingly high or low.
  • Check the chart type: Some built-in chart-line elements are supported only in specified chart types. Microsoft documents those limits for predefined series lines, drop lines, high-low lines, and up-down bars: Add or remove series lines, drop lines, high-low lines, or up-down bars in a chart. These built-in elements are distinct from a custom average-value series.

Microsoft’s current support guidance covers Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021 across desktop platforms; chart editing is also documented for Excel for the web. Exact labels and controls can differ by platform and version.
