Valheim 1.0 has eight Forsaken bosses. Their order is Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, The Queen, Fader and Kall Fimbulbringer. Each belongs to a biome and acts as a progression gate: you locate its clue, reach the altar or arena, offer the required item, and defeat the boss before safely advancing. The Deep North and Kall Fimbulbringer arrived with the 1.0 launch on September 9, 2026.
The reliable way to win is preparation rather than trading hits. Upgrade equipment, bring high-quality food, carry the resistance mead suited to the biome, clear nearby spawns, and establish a portal or fallback route outside the arena. The guide below gives the known offering, practical damage plan, dangerous attacks, and recovery advice for every boss. Fader and Kall are the most release-sensitive encounters; their exact 1.0 offerings and mechanics should be checked against the current in-game descriptions before you commit rare materials.
Valheim boss order at a glance
Iron Gate describes the progression rule plainly: each biome has its own boss, and that boss must be defeated to venture further. You can explore beyond a biome in limited ways, but the Forsaken order is the intended difficulty curve and unlock path.
| Order | Boss and biome | Summon offering | Damage focus | Signature danger | Preparation that matters most | Known reward or unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eikthyr — Meadows | Two Deer Trophies | Reliable early melee or bow damage; punish recovery windows | Lightning charge and antler sweep | Best available food, shield, bow, stamina for dodges | Stamina-focused Forsaken power |
| 2 | The Elder — Black Forest | Three Ancient Seeds | Fire arrows or another dependable fire source | Projectile vines and Greydwarf interference | Bronze weapons, buckler, fire arrows, pillar cover | Not stated in the current references |
| 3 | Bonemass — Swamp | Ten Withered Bones | Blunt damage, especially a mace or two-handed hammer | Poison cloud, thrown blob and summoned adds | Poison-resistance mead, blunt weapon, stamina reserve | Wishbone for the next exploration step |
| 4 | Moder — Mountains | Three Dragon Eggs | Ranged damage while airborne; brief melee punishments when grounded | Frost breath, tail sweep and airborne phases | Frost resistance, mountain food, repaired bow and ample arrows | Not stated in the current references |
| 5 | Yagluth — Plains | Five Fuling Totems | Frost-oriented ranged damage | Meteor and breath attacks plus Plains spawns | Fire resistance, high-health food, cover and spare ammunition | Not stated in the current references |
| 6 | The Queen — Mistlands | Use the required seal/key progression item at the sealed arena; verify the live item description | Ranged or magic damage while controlling Seekers | Teleporting movement, swarms and cramped arena routes | Endgame Mistlands gear, healing, stamina or Eitr food, clear exits | Required before entering Ashlands according to Iron Gate |
| 7 | Fader — Ashlands | Verify the current 1.0 altar offering in-game | Use the strongest current Ashlands weapons and documented resistances | Area attacks, lava and local spawns | Fully upgraded Ashlands gear, fire/environmental protection, safe portal route | Not stated in the current references |
| 8 | Kall Fimbulbringer — Deep North | Verify the current 1.0 offering in-game | Use fully upgraded Deep North equipment and the current resistance table | Endgame arena hazards and cold exposure | Best food and healing, layered cold protection, cleared arena, fallback base | Final Forsaken encounter in current 1.0 references |
The table separates documented information from release-sensitive details. “Not stated” means the current references do not establish a reward; it is not a claim that the boss has no reward.
Preparation that prevents most failed summons
Find the location before spending the offering
Search the biome for a Vegvisir or another location clue, then visit the altar or arena and inspect the surroundings. A summon is safer when you already know where the nearest cover, portal route and corpse-recovery path are. Do not place your only portal inside a boss arena: destruction, blocked entrances or hostile spawns can turn one defeat into a long recovery trip.
Use a layered loadout
- Equipment: arrive with repaired and upgraded armor, a shield when the fight allows close combat, and a ranged option even for a melee-focused build.
- Food: favor the best food available in the current progression tier. Mix health and stamina deliberately; a larger health bar does not help if you cannot dodge, and a huge stamina bar is dangerous when one hit can kill you.
- Resistance: brew the relevant mead before entering the arena. Fire, poison, frost and environmental damage are often more important than a small weapon upgrade.
- Ammunition and durability: carry more arrows or other ammunition than the minimum and repair everything before summoning. A long fight can outlast a single bow or weapon durability bar.
- Arena control: clear nearby Greydwarfs, wolves, drakes, Fulings, deathsquitos or Seekers before offering the item. Adds are frequently what make an otherwise manageable fight unrecoverable.
- Recovery: build a portal or fallback base outside the arena, with a safe bed and spare equipment. Keep the route clear enough to retrieve a tombstone without fighting through a fresh spawn wave.
Read the summon animation and keep stamina available
Most bosses telegraph their high-damage move. Spend stamina on positioning and emergency dodges first, then attack during the recovery window. Long, uninterrupted melee strings are attractive but usually fail when the boss begins a charge, breath, sweep or area attack during your animation.

How to summon Eikthyr
Offer two Deer Trophies at the Meadows altar. Deer Trophies come from deer, so you can collect them while exploring the starting biome rather than delaying the fight for a special expedition.
Best strategy
Eikthyr is primarily a lesson in stamina management and telegraph reading. Bring your best early-game food, a shield and a bow. Circle rather than backpedal in a straight line, keep enough stamina for a dodge, and avoid committing to a full melee combo when Eikthyr begins a charge or raises its antlers. After the lightning charge or antler sweep finishes, step in for a short attack sequence, then disengage before the next telegraph.
A bow gives you a safe way to damage Eikthyr while it is repositioning, but do not sprint continuously just to maintain distance. Running your stamina bar empty leaves you unable to evade the next attack. If you are using a shield, block only when a dodge would put you into terrain or another attack; the goal is to preserve stamina for movement.
What Eikthyr unlocks
Eikthyr’s trophy grants a stamina-focused Forsaken power. Activate it before long journeys or demanding early combat, when reduced stamina use has more practical value than a narrowly defensive effect.

2. The Elder: fire and pillar cover in the Black Forest
How to summon The Elder
Offer three Ancient Seeds at the Ancient Bowl. Ancient Seeds are found through Black Forest exploration and enemy camps, so gather them while locating the altar rather than treating the summon as a separate farming project.
Best strategy
Fire arrows provide the practical damage plan described by current progression guides. Bring bronze weapons, a buckler and a large supply of fire arrows, and repair your bow immediately before the ritual. The Elder’s arena has stone pillars that can block its projectile vines. Fight around those pillars: expose yourself long enough to shoot, then use the stone to break the direct line of fire.
Greydwarfs can surround you while you are focused on the boss. Clear them promptly, but do not chase a fleeing add so far that The Elder’s vines regain an unobstructed angle. Keep the boss and your escape route in sight. If the arena becomes crowded, move around the outside of the pillars, remove the closest add, and resume ranged pressure instead of trying to finish the boss through a swarm.
Common mistake
Starting with a melee-only loadout makes the fight unnecessarily slow because The Elder can keep you at range with vines. Even if your primary weapon is melee, carry fire arrows so you can deal steady damage while the boss is positioned on the far side of the altar.

3. Bonemass: blunt damage and poison control in the Swamp
How to summon Bonemass
Offer ten Withered Bones at the Swamp altar. The required bones are found in Swamp crypts and associated structures, so plan a crypt run with enough inventory space and a portal route before you return to the altar.
Best strategy
Brew poison-resistance mead before entering the arena. Use blunt damage—especially a mace or two-handed hammer—because slash, pierce and most ranged attacks are inefficient against Bonemass. The fight is safer when you stay close enough to control the boss but reserve stamina for its poison cloud and thrown blob.

Bonemass can summon adds. Kill or kite those immediately; allowing them to accumulate is more dangerous than losing a few seconds of boss damage. Use swamp terrain and nearby objects to break line of sight when the poison attack is coming, but do not trap yourself against deep water or an uneven bank. If the boss moves into a poor position, reposition it toward open ground before resuming attacks.
Recovery plan
Place the recovery portal on dry ground outside the arena and mark the safest approach. Poison resistance does not remove all damage, and a tombstone surrounded by blobs or skeletons can require several attempts. Carry a spare blunt weapon if the arena is far from your main base.
What Bonemass unlocks
Bonemass drops the Wishbone, which opens the next exploration step by helping you locate hidden resources. Treat the reward as an exploration tool, not merely a trophy: it changes how you search after the Swamp.
4. Moder: survive the Mountains while she owns the sky
How to summon Moder
Offer three Dragon Eggs at the Mountain altar. Dragon Eggs are heavy and awkward to transport, so establish a route and storage point before carrying all three to the summit.
Best strategy
Bring frost resistance, strong mountain food, a fully repaired bow and ample arrows. Moder spends substantial time airborne, making ranged damage the dependable baseline. Shoot while she is in the air, then punish briefly when she lands. Move before the frost breath or tail sweep reaches you; standing still to complete one more attack is a common cause of deaths.
Prepare a sheltered fighting position near, but not inside, the altar area. Clear nearby drakes and wolves before the summon, because a third-party attack is especially dangerous when you are already watching the sky. Avoid building a tiny enclosure that blocks your own movement. You need enough open ground to dodge and enough solid terrain to interrupt a breath attack.

Mountain-specific checks
- Drink frost resistance before the ritual, not after the first hit.
- Repair the bow and bring more arrows than the apparent health bar suggests; airborne phases lengthen the encounter.
- Keep stamina for downhill movement and emergency dodges. A steep slope can turn a normal hit into fall damage or a stranded position.
5. Yagluth: cover, frost pressure and a clean Plains arena
How to summon Yagluth
Offer five Fuling Totems at the Plains altar. Collect them from Fuling settlements and camps, then scout the altar for nearby deathsquitos and other patrols before placing the final totem.
Best strategy
Current guides commonly use frost-oriented ranged damage as the safest sustained plan. Identify or build cover before starting, then keep moving around Yagluth’s meteor and breath attacks. Do not stand in the open to maintain a perfect firing angle; surviving the next area attack is worth more than a few extra arrows.
Use fire resistance and high-health food, and carry a reserve bow or enough ammunition for a long encounter. Fire resistance reduces the margin for error but does not make attacks harmless. Watch the ground and sky rather than focusing only on the boss model, and reposition before the meteor pattern closes your route.
Remove every outside threat
Fulings and deathsquitos must not be allowed to join the fight. Clear the perimeter, avoid starting near a settlement, and keep an escape lane open. If an add appears during the battle, eliminate the closest immediate threat before returning to Yagluth; a single deathsquito hit at the wrong moment can interrupt a dodge and cascade into multiple attacks.

6. The Queen: control the Mistlands arena before damage
How to summon The Queen
Locate the sealed Mistlands arena and use the required seal or key progression item described by current guides. The exact item wording is tied to the live game’s progression data, so inspect the current altar and inventory description rather than relying on an old label. Clear the entrance and nearby Seekers before committing to the fight.
Best strategy
Enter with endgame Mistlands equipment, abundant healing, and food that supports both stamina and Eitr if your build uses magic. The Queen’s teleporting movement and Seeker swarms make arena control more important than standing in one place to maximize damage. Ranged or magic attacks let you keep distance while you decide whether to eliminate an add or pressure the boss.

Keep corridors and exits usable. Do not fill the arena with uncontrolled summons, construction or dropped items that restrict movement. When the Queen relocates, move deliberately toward a route you have already cleared rather than sprinting into an unknown tunnel. If Seekers begin to surround you, create space first, then resume damage.
Progression timing
Iron Gate recommends defeating The Queen before entering the Ashlands. Treat that recommendation as a preparation checkpoint: upgrade Mistlands equipment, stock healing and Eitr food, and establish a reliable portal network before attempting the next biome.

What is established for Fader
Fader is the Ashlands-era late-game boss, and the Ashlands are the penultimate biome in the current progression. The exact altar offering and attack-weakness terminology are the details most likely to change between 1.0 patches. Verify the live item descriptions and current resistance information immediately before spending the offering; do not substitute an old guide’s ingredient list.
Preparation
- Use fully upgraded Ashlands gear and the strongest weapons your current build supports.
- Bring fire and environmental protection appropriate to the Ashlands, plus high-end food and healing supplies.
- Scout lava, ledges and local spawn points before the summon. A portal that is technically nearby but exposed to lava or hostile spawns is not a recovery route.
- Clear the arena perimeter and establish a safe fallback base outside the boss area.
Best strategy
Keep moving around area attacks and reserve stamina for emergency dodges instead of spending every point on damage. Use the current biome’s documented strongest damage options, but prioritize a weapon you can sustain through a long fight. If local enemies enter the arena, remove the threat that can interrupt your movement first. Fader should be approached as a recovery operation as much as a damage check: fight only after you know how to retrieve a tombstone if the first attempt fails.
8. Kall Fimbulbringer: the Deep North capstone
Where Kall fits in 1.0
Current 1.0 boss references place Kall Fimbulbringer in the Deep North as the eighth and final Forsaken. The Deep North launched with Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026. Because this encounter is new, verify the exact offering, arena mechanics and resistance table against the latest in-game or official patch documentation before beginning.
Preparation
Bring fully upgraded Deep North equipment, the highest-quality food available, generous healing, layered cold protection and a cleared arena. Build a reliable portal or fallback base on safe ground; a route exposed to blizzards, cliffs or local spawns is not sufficient. In co-op, agree on a recovery point and target-priority callouts before anyone places the final offering.
Best strategy
Treat Kall as an endgame capstone rather than a fight to improvise. Preserve consumables for the final phase, maintain enough stamina to escape overlapping attacks, and use the current resistance table to choose damage types instead of assuming an older boss weakness still applies. Keep the arena perimeter clear so a bad dodge does not become a fall, cold-exposure or add-control problem. If the first attempt reveals an unfamiliar attack pattern, recover and adjust the loadout rather than repeatedly feeding the same arena.
How to recover after a failed attempt
- Stop the spiral: return to the fallback portal, repair, eat and restock before another run. Do not rush back with damaged equipment and low food.
- Check the route: identify which enemy or terrain feature blocked the tombstone. Clear that specific obstacle, then improve the approach with a marker or temporary workbench.
- Change one variable: add the missing resistance, switch to the documented damage type, carry more ammunition or replace a stamina-poor food combination. Changing everything at once makes the lesson unclear.
- Re-clear the perimeter: boss arenas can repopulate while you recover. Remove nearby spawns before attempting the corpse run or resummoning.
- Protect rare materials: do not spend another offering until the arena and recovery route are stable. The offering is less valuable than the preparation it exposes.
Which boss should you prepare for next?
Use the next biome’s environment as the decision rule. After Eikthyr, improve stamina and basic defense. Before The Elder, secure bronze equipment and fire arrows. Before Bonemass, obtain poison resistance and a blunt weapon. Before Moder, solve frost protection and reliable ranged damage. Before Yagluth, build cover and stock fire resistance and frost-oriented ammunition. Before The Queen, complete Mistlands upgrades and learn to control Seekers in confined routes. Before Fader and Kall, maximize equipment, food, healing and recovery infrastructure rather than relying on a single weapon upgrade.
The boss order is fixed for progression, but your exact build does not have to be. A shield-and-mace player, an archer and a magic-focused player can all succeed when they respect the documented weakness, preserve stamina, and keep the arena recoverable.
