Michael Dorn’s best-supported military-jet collection includes the CASA HA-200 Saeta, Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, North American F-86C Sabre and North American Sabreliner 40A. A June 2023 report also says he owned and piloted an F-5B, but that aircraft is absent from later, more detailed inventories. The Northrop T-38 Talon, Northrop F-5, Vought F-8 Crusader and Lockheed F-104 Starfighter belong in the “wanted” category, not the confirmed collection.
Which aircraft are documented as part of Dorn’s collection?
Reporting from AvBuyer in April 2023 and a 2024 SlashGear roundup supports four aircraft as collection members. The sequence below follows Dorn’s own account where available.
| Aircraft | Ownership status | Dorn’s documented history | Distinctive details reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| CASA HA-200 Saeta | Confirmed | First military jet Dorn bought | Tiny, twin-engine jet; identified by SlashGear as a type with Spanish Air Force history. Reported maximum speed: 429 mph; climb rate: approximately 3,345 feet per minute. |
| Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star | Confirmed | Bought after the CASA and kept for about three years | Dorn called it “built like a tank.” Its slow engine response meant approaches had to be planned early. Reported maximum speed: around 600 mph. |
| North American F-86C Sabre | Confirmed | Reached after following an Air Force-style progression | AvBuyer’s inventory specifies the F-86C; SlashGear refers to the aircraft as the F-86 Sabre. |
| North American Sabreliner 40A | Confirmed, later sold | Purchased after the F-86 | A corporate-jet derivative that required a copilot. Dorn found the operating arrangement and costs unsuitable. |
| Northrop F-5B | Reported addition; medium confidence | Ownership and piloting claimed in a June 2023 Metropolitan Airport News caption | Missing from AvBuyer’s detailed 2023 inventory and the 2024 SlashGear list, so it should not be presented with the same certainty as the four aircraft above. |
How Dorn’s jet ownership progressed
CASA HA-200 Saeta: the introduction to jets
AvBuyer describes the CASA as Dorn’s first military jet: a small twin-engine aircraft that introduced him to jet operations. SlashGear identifies the type as the Hispano Aviación HA-200 Saeta and notes its Spanish Air Force history. The article’s specifications—429 mph maximum speed and roughly 3,345 feet per minute of climb—are aircraft figures, not measurements of Dorn’s personal flying.

Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star: a three-year learning experience
Dorn bought the T-33 after the CASA and owned it for approximately three years, a period reported by both AvBuyer and SlashGear. He recalled, “It was a good experience … because the T-33 is built like a tank.” He also described delayed engine response, which made energy management and approach planning important. SlashGear gives the T-33 a maximum speed of about 600 mph.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
North American F-86C Sabre: reaching a fighter milestone
AvBuyer’s inventory names Dorn’s aircraft as an F-86C, while SlashGear uses the broader F-86 Sabre designation. In an interview quoted by SlashGear, Dorn said, “I went through the same type of process the Air Force pilots go through. And got to the F-86 and it just kinda happened. It was amazing.” That comment explains the aircraft’s place in his progression, but the available accounts do not provide a purchase date or ownership duration.
North American Sabreliner 40A: a practical mismatch
After the F-86, Dorn bought a Sabreliner 40A, a corporate-jet derivative. The aircraft’s required copilot arrangement and operating expenses did not fit what he wanted, and he eventually sold it. Its inclusion is therefore confirmed historically, even though it was not a permanent part of the collection.

Why the F-5B should be labeled separately
The June 2023 Metropolitan Airport News page includes a caption saying Dorn is pictured with an F-5B, one of several military jets “he has owned and piloted.” That is direct ownership language, but it conflicts with the fuller AvBuyer inventory published the same year and the later SlashGear roundup, neither of which lists an F-5B.
The most accurate presentation is to call the F-5B an independently reported addition with medium confidence. It may reflect an aircraft omitted from a later summary, a short-term ownership period, or a difference in how the inventories were compiled. The evidence does not justify silently merging it into the four-aircraft core list.

Jets Dorn wanted but the evidence does not show he owned
Northrop T-38 Talon, Northrop F-5 and Vought F-8 Crusader
SlashGear reports that Dorn was considering a T-38 Talon, an F-5 or an F-8 Crusader. The F-8 was discussed as a possible heritage-flight restoration. These are acquisition interests, not confirmed collection members. The reported F-5B is a separate claim and should not be used to retroactively treat every F-5 reference as proof of ownership.
Lockheed F-104 Starfighter
In a 2022 Flying Magazine interview, Dorn called the F-104 the jet he had always wanted and his “final airplane,” adding, “because it really goes fast.” SlashGear repeated that statement, but it describes an aspiration. No cited account confirms that Dorn acquired an F-104.

What is established about Dorn as a pilot
The official StarTrek.com Time Capsule says Dorn earned his pilot’s license between the first and second seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It also records that he flew with the Blue Angels, participated in F-16 flight maneuvers and “now owns his own jet.” That source confirms a substantial aviation background, but it does not identify the jet models in his collection.
AvBuyer reported approximately 1,600 hours of total flight time for Dorn in 2023. That figure is a snapshot from that interview, not a lifetime total that should be projected into later years.

Bottom line on the collection
Count the CASA HA-200 Saeta, T-33 Shooting Star, F-86C Sabre and Sabreliner 40A as the best-supported aircraft in Michael Dorn’s military-jet history. Add the F-5B only with a qualification because one 2023 report names it while later inventories omit it. Keep the T-38, F-5, F-8 and F-104 in a separate aspirational category; the cited evidence shows Dorn considered or desired them, not that he owned them.
