Verdict: The Everdure by Heston Blumenthal HUB is a large, freestanding charcoal grill that uses a 1,400W electric element to light the charcoal. It is not a gas grill and does not replace charcoal with electricity: you still cook over charcoal, manage ash and coals, and need an outdoor mains connection for ignition and the rotisserie motor. Its strongest reasons to buy are the 3,270 cm² cooking area, a manufacturer-rated 40 kg rotisserie, and a three-position entertaining-station design. Its main compromises are a 74 kg chassis, a footprint more than 1.3 metres wide, ongoing charcoal cleanup, and regional differences in price, warranty and availability.
What the Everdure HUB is
The HUB is a freestanding charcoal barbecue with integrated electric ignition. On Everdure’s US product page it is model EHUB1B in matte black. A 1,400W heating element sits beneath the charcoal bed and is used to start the fire; after the coals are lit, the element is not the cooking fuel. Food is cooked by charcoal heat and smoke, with the grill’s separate rotisserie motor available when you use the supplied spit assembly.
That distinction matters when comparing the HUB with gas grills or electric outdoor cookers. You must buy and load charcoal, wait for it to reach a useful cooking state, control airflow and heat, and remove ash after the grill cools. In return, the HUB keeps charcoal cooking while removing much of the usual fire-lighting step. The manufacturer says ignition takes less than 10 minutes, while its quick guide gives a reference of less than nine minutes using up to 1.8 kg of lump charcoal. Both statements are manufacturer guidance, not independently verified timing under a standard test.
The official instructions also say the unit must not be used indoors. Plan for a stable outdoor location, access to a grounded mains outlet or a suitable outdoor-rated extension lead, ventilation, and enough clearance to open the lid and raise the rotisserie poles.

The stated depth includes the grills installed, while the height changes by 323 mm when the poles are raised. Those dimensions describe the product itself, not the full clearance needed to work safely around a hot lid, rotating spit or electrical cable.
What is included in the box
Everdure lists the following components:
- HUB chassis
- Left and right open grills
- Rotisserie rod
- Four CLIPLOCK forks
- Lid
- Four legs
- Four casters
The specifications do not say that charcoal, a grill cover, heat-resistant gloves or an extension cord are included. The quick guide refers to heat-resistant barbecue gloves for handling hot rotisserie parts, so treat gloves as a separate safety purchase unless your regional package explicitly says otherwise.
How the electric ignition works
Expected lighting time
Everdure’s product information says the HUB can ignite charcoal in under 10 minutes. The quick guide describes a reference cycle of less than nine minutes with up to 1.8 kg of lump charcoal. The same material warns that charcoal type and external conditions affect the result. Cold temperatures, wind, damp fuel, the amount of charcoal and the use of briquettes can all change how quickly a usable fire develops. Therefore, “under 10 minutes” should be read as a manufacturer claim under suitable conditions, not a guaranteed start time for every cook.
Basic lighting sequence
- Position the HUB outdoors on a stable surface, with the casters locked if the model’s hardware allows it.
- Confirm that the charcoal bed is clear of excess ash and that the grills and lid are correctly positioned for the lighting procedure.
- Add the recommended natural lump charcoal, keeping within the amount specified by the instructions for your cooking setup. The guide’s reference uses up to 1.8 kg.
- Connect the grill to a suitable mains outlet. If an extension is necessary, Everdure’s FAQ permits an outdoor-rated 10A cord up to 10 m.
- Start the ignition element using the control procedure in the supplied manual. Keep the lid and surrounding area configured as instructed rather than improvising with accelerants.
- Watch the charcoal as it catches. Do not leave a powered, heating grill unattended, and keep combustible items away from the appliance.
- When the coals have reached the condition required for your recipe, switch off the ignition element and disconnect power if the instructions call for it before cooking.
Never use an extension cord in rain, and inspect the cord for damage before every use. The FAQ specifically advises checking its condition. The ignition element and rotisserie motor both depend on mains electricity, so an outlet problem can affect more than the initial light.

Fuel choice
Natural lump charcoal is Everdure’s recommended fuel. Briquettes are permitted, but the company does not guarantee an exact ignition time for them because formulations contain different ingredients. If predictable lighting is important, use dry fuel of the recommended type and store it so it cannot absorb moisture. Do not infer that one brand or charcoal size is officially endorsed; the published guidance is about fuel form, not a named supplier.
Cooking and rotisserie capacity
Grill surface
The listed cooking area is 3,270 cm², or 506.85 in². That is enough room for a large family meal or for separating direct and indirect charcoal zones, but the number alone does not tell you the usable shape, height clearance or heat distribution for a particular recipe. Those performance details are not established by the available public information, so treat the area as a capacity specification rather than a guarantee of even cooking.
Rotisserie system
The HUB includes a rotisserie rod, a discrete motor and four CLIPLOCK forks. Everdure rates the rotisserie for 40 kg (88.18 lb). The rod height is changed manually among three positions. Manual adjustment is straightforward in concept but requires you to stop, handle the supports safely and choose the position before or during a cook according to the instructions. Balance the food carefully and stay within the stated rating; a heavy but poorly balanced load can still stress the motor or turn unevenly.

The four forks provide several securing points for poultry, roasts or other foods that fit the rod. The capacity rating is a limit, not a recommendation to load the full amount. Food geometry, clearance from the lid and charcoal, and the ability to keep the load balanced remain practical constraints.

Power during a rotisserie cook
The rotisserie motor also needs electrical power. If you plan to move the HUB after lighting, route the cable so it cannot contact hot surfaces, become a trip hazard or be pulled as the grill is repositioned. Disconnect power after use as directed by the manufacturer.

HUB II is not simply a color name for the original. Electronic height control changes how you position the rotisserie, and the telescoping shelf changes how you stage tools or food. If either feature is central to your workflow, compare the exact regional product pages rather than assuming accessories or controls are interchangeable. The available material does not establish a universal price difference, cooking-performance advantage or global stock position.
Will the HUB fit your patio?
Measure the route, not only the final spot
At 1,387 mm wide and 591 mm deep with the grills installed, the HUB is wider than many compact cart grills. Its 74 kg net weight also makes stairs, narrow gates and soft ground important considerations. Measure the narrowest doorway, gate and turn in the route from delivery point to patio. Include packaging clearance and the space needed for people to steer the casters.

The lowered height is 900 mm; the raised-pole height is 1,223 mm. Check overhead clearance for the raised position, especially beneath pergolas, low balconies or shelving. Leave room to open the lid, stand safely while turning food, access the controls and keep the power cable away from heat and foot traffic. Outdoor placement only
The manufacturer explicitly prohibits indoor use. A covered, ventilated outdoor area can protect the appliance from weather, but do not enclose it so tightly that smoke and heat accumulate. If the grill will remain outside, Everdure recommends a purpose-made HUB cover for storage. Cover it only after the appliance and charcoal have cooled completely.
Cleaning, storage and ongoing care
After each cook
- Allow the charcoal and all metal parts to cool fully.
- Disconnect the power supply after use.
- Remove ash and loose residue according to the manual, avoiding contact with hot embers.
- Clean surfaces with mild detergent, warm water and a soft cloth or non-abrasive scourer.
- Dry components before reassembly or covering.
The grills, rotisserie rod and forks should not be placed in a dishwasher. Abrasive cleaners and aggressive scouring can damage finishes, so use the gentler method specified by Everdure. Inspect the rod, forks, motor connection and electrical cord periodically for damage before the next cook.
Storage between uses
Keep charcoal dry and store it separately from the grill. Once the HUB is cool and clean, use the purpose-made cover recommended by the manufacturer if it remains outdoors. A cover reduces exposure but does not turn the appliance into an indoor-safe product; maintain ventilation and follow local storage rules.
Safety and electrical requirements
- Use the HUB outdoors only; do not operate it in a house, garage or enclosed room.
- Use a suitable mains outlet for the grill’s electrical requirements.
- If needed, use only an outdoor-rated 10A extension cord up to 10 m, as allowed by the FAQ.
- Never use the extension cord in rain, and replace it if the insulation, plug or connector is damaged.
- Keep cables, covers and combustible materials away from hot surfaces and the charcoal bed.
- Use heat-resistant gloves when handling hot rotisserie components.
- Do not move, clean or cover the grill while charcoal or metal parts remain hot.
- Disconnect power after use, including after the rotisserie has stopped.
These precautions address both fire and electrical hazards. Charcoal can remain hot after visible flames disappear, so a short-looking cooking session still requires a complete cool-down before maintenance.

Price, warranty and independent evidence
CHOICE’s public listing identifies the HUB as an electric/charcoal barbecue and shows AUD 2,199 for its tested model. It also lists a five-year warranty for the firebox and outer body, two years for specified stainless-steel parts, the rotisserie motor, heating element and paint, and one year for other parts. Those figures are an Australia-specific reference from that listing, not a guaranteed current price or warranty worldwide. Confirm the terms with the seller and the local manufacturer before buying, especially if you are outside Australia or considering an older stock item.
The public CHOICE page does not expose its Expert Rating or detailed performance sub-scores without membership. It is therefore not possible to state a CHOICE score, claim that CHOICE recommended the HUB, or use the listing as evidence that the grill cooks evenly, lights faster than alternatives or cleans easily. The verifiable public information is the product category, listed price and warranty breakdown.
Who should buy the HUB?
It makes sense if you want
- Charcoal flavor and cooking behavior rather than gas, with a built-in way to start the coals.
- A large 3,270 cm² grill surface for entertaining.
- A substantial rotisserie rated by the manufacturer for up to 40 kg.
- A freestanding station with casters instead of a built-in masonry installation.
- Manual, three-position rotisserie adjustment and you do not need an integrated shelf.
Look elsewhere or reconsider if you need
- A grill that works without charcoal, smoke, ash or outdoor ventilation.
- Operation where no safe mains outlet is available.
- A compact appliance for a narrow balcony, small storage locker or tight doorway.
- Electronic rotisserie height control or the slide-out shelf described for HUB II.
- A purchase decision based on a universally fixed price or warranty; those terms vary by market.
Is the Everdure HUB worth buying?
The HUB is worth considering when its combination of charcoal cooking, electric ignition, a large work surface and a heavy-duty rotisserie matches your space and cooking style. The electric element addresses the most inconvenient part of charcoal cooking without changing the fuel or the resulting cooking method. The 40 kg rotisserie rating and 506.85 in² listed area also make it a serious entertaining appliance rather than a compact grill.

Buyers who specifically want electronic spit-height control and a telescoping shelf should compare the HUB II on those features, not assume the original can be upgraded to match it.
Before ordering, verify the exact model code, color, included parts, electrical compatibility, current local price, warranty terms and stock status. If those checks fit your patio and your expectations, the HUB’s documented feature set provides a clear case for a premium charcoal entertaining station; it does not provide evidence of a universal ignition time or a tested cooking-performance verdict.
