As of October 12, 2026, the Evercade Nexus is the better fit if you want a larger screen, twin analogue sticks and a new device—but it is not scheduled to launch until October 30. The original Evercade EXP is the more compelling choice if you want Mini HDMI TV output or its 18 built-in Capcom games and are comfortable buying used. Both belong to the physical Evercade cartridge ecosystem, so the handheld price is only part of the library decision.

At a glance: what separates the Nexus and original EXP?

The decision is less about whether one handheld is universally better and more about which features matter to you, and when you need to buy. Blaze Entertainment’s Nexus announcement, reported by Video Games Chronicle (VGC), describes a new handheld due October 30, 2026. The original EXP, released in late 2022, has a different set of attractions: built-in Capcom games and a Mini HDMI connection for a TV.

Feature Evercade Nexus Original Evercade EXP
Availability at the time of writing Announced; scheduled for October 30, 2026. Tom’s Guide also covered the device in a hands-on report dated October 8, before launch. Released in late 2022. Evercade Info Central’s guide says it is no longer sold new and is available second-hand.
Screen 5.89-inch IPS panel, according to VGC’s report of Blaze Entertainment’s announcement. Resolution is not stated in the cited coverage. 4.3-inch IPS, 800 × 480, according to Evercade Info Central’s original EXP guide.
Controls Twin analogue sticks; Blaze describes Nexus as the first Evercade device with them. The consulted EXP guide does not specify twin analogue sticks.
TV and headphone connections Wireless headphone support is announced. TV output is not stated in the cited Nexus coverage. Mini HDMI output at 720p, stereo speakers and a 3.5 mm headphone jack are listed in the EXP guide.
Included games and cartridge support Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack is included. Blaze’s announcement describes compatibility with more than 80 Evercade cartridges and more than 700 retro games. 18 Capcom games are built in, as well as full Evercade cartridge compatibility.
Other announced or listed features EverSync local multiplayer sharing and TATE mode are announced. TATE mode and Wi-Fi for firmware updates are listed in the EXP guide.
Price Announced at $199.99 / £169.99. These are announcement prices; the cited coverage does not establish later availability or local retailer pricing. No current new price is established. Used prices vary and were not verified.

The EXP column here means the original EXP, not the later EXP-R. Some coverage compares the Nexus screen with the EXP-R; the 4.3-inch original EXP figure above comes from the original EXP guide. The specification information supports a feature comparison, not a tested ranking for image quality, comfort, battery life, responsiveness or durability.

Choose the Nexus if screen size and twin sticks matter most

The Nexus has the clearest advantage for someone who wants a bigger display and analogue controls in a new Evercade handheld. Its announced 5.89-inch IPS panel is 1.59 inches larger diagonally than the original EXP’s 4.3-inch screen. That figure describes screen diagonal only; it does not establish a particular difference in usable screen area, sharpness or how games look in practice. The Nexus screen resolution is not stated in the cited announcement coverage, while the EXP guide gives its resolution as 800 × 480.

#1 Best Overall
Evercade Nexus and Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack
  • Evercade Nexus delivers classic retro gaming on the go! New sleek design with textured grips, dual analogue joysticks and the biggest, best Evercade screen to date. Complete Evercade cartridge library compatibility of over 80 cartridges and 700+ games.
  • 5.89" 840x512 IPS high resolution screen with 500+ nit brightness, WiFi 6 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless connectivity for updates, Wireless headphone support. TATE mode for vertical screen play.
  • EverSync wireless multiplayer allows multiple Nexus handhelds to directly connect and play together in supported games with no WiFi network required.
  • Dual stereo sound with front-facing speakers, 5+ hours battery life with USB-C charging, 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • Includes physical cartridge featuring brand new versions of the 64-bit hits, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie from Rare. Comes with console, USB-C charging cable and physical game cartridge featuring Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. Note: Evercade Nexus does not connect to a TV.

Blaze calls the Nexus the first Evercade device with twin analogue sticks. That is an important control difference if you prefer two-stick input for a game that supports it. It does not, by itself, show how any individual cartridge uses the sticks, whether every compatible game benefits from them, or how the controls feel. Those are questions to assess with the games you intend to play once the device is available to try.

The Nexus announcement also includes wireless headphone support. That could suit play where a cable is inconvenient, but the cited material does not state a wireless standard, supported headphone features, connection behavior or whether headphones are included. Treat it as a hardware feature announcement, not as a promise about a particular accessory or audio experience.

On price, the announced Nexus figure is $199.99 / £169.99. It is a useful planning figure, not proof that every retailer, country or later sales date will have that exact price. Consider the cost of the included handheld and Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack alongside any additional cartridges you want; the rest of the Evercade library is not included simply because the device is compatible with it.

That makes the Nexus the more straightforward option if you want to buy new at launch and value its announced control and screen changes. However, its headline specifications do not settle questions such as how long it runs between charges, how comfortable it is over a long session, or whether the larger display changes the feel of particular games. Those are practical ownership questions, not conclusions that can be drawn from screen size alone.

Choose the original EXP if you need TV output or its Capcom games

The original EXP’s most distinctive practical feature is Mini HDMI output to a TV at 720p. If playing on a television is part of your setup, that is a concrete reason to seek out the EXP rather than choose solely by screen size. The cited Nexus announcement coverage does not state that the Nexus has TV output, so do not assume it does—or assume it does not—without a confirmed specification.

The EXP also has 18 Capcom games built in. They give the handheld a collection of games beyond the cartridges you own, and they are the main library distinction established for the original model. The Nexus package instead is announced with a physical Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack. These are different kinds of included-game value: one is a set of 18 built-in titles; the other is an included cartridge pack. The announcement and guide do not establish that either handheld includes the other’s games.

For personal listening, the EXP guide lists stereo speakers and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. That gives you a stated wired-headphone connection as well as speakers. The Nexus has announced wireless headphone support, but its other audio connection details are not established in the cited coverage.

There is a timing and condition trade-off. Evercade Info Central says the original EXP is no longer sold new and can be found second-hand. There is no verified current used-market price here, so compare actual local listings rather than treating any particular figure as typical. Check the condition of the handheld, screen, controls and ports, and confirm what is included in the sale. A low asking price may not be a good value if the device or accessories are incomplete or not working as expected.

For a used purchase, distinguish the price of the console from the value of the package being offered. The EXP’s 18 built-in Capcom games are part of its appeal, while cartridges in a seller’s listing may be additional items rather than standard contents. Ask the seller what is included and whether the Mini HDMI connection, headphone jack, speakers and controls work. The cited guide establishes the model’s features, but it does not verify the state of any particular second-hand unit.

How the cartridge library affects the real cost

Both devices are part of the physical Evercade cartridge ecosystem, so an existing collection is relevant to either choice. If you already own cartridges, check that the titles you care about are among those you plan to use and budget for the hardware rather than assuming you must begin a new library. The Nexus announcement describes more than 80 compatible Evercade cartridges and more than 700 retro games. Those are announcement-era product-library counts reported by VGC, not independently audited market totals, and they do not mean that all those games come in the Nexus box.

The Nexus is announced with the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack. Other compatible cartridges are separate purchases. The original EXP has full Evercade cartridge compatibility in addition to its 18 built-in Capcom games. If you are buying your first handheld, compare the specific games included with the device against the cartridges you would actually buy next; a broad compatibility count says little about whether the available games fit your tastes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current EXP buyer, used hardware cost and the cost of any missing cartridges should be considered together. A second-hand EXP might be attractive when its built-in games and TV output matter, but the evidence does not establish a normal used price or guarantee availability in a particular area. For a Nexus buyer, the published launch price is known as announced, but the cost of expanding the collection depends on which cartridges you choose.

A useful way to compare total spending is to make two short lists before choosing: what each console includes, and what you would still want to buy. For the Nexus, start with the announced $199.99 / £169.99 price and the included Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack, then add only the cartridges you expect to purchase. For the EXP, use the actual asking price of a specific used listing, count its built-in games as included, and separately note any cartridges or accessories that seller is offering. Because used prices were not verified, a fair comparison has to use current local listings rather than an assumed average.

If you already own Evercade cartridges, compatibility can reduce the need to spend on a new library, but it does not eliminate the need to choose a model based on its hardware. Conversely, if you are new to Evercade, the more-than-80-cartridge announcement figure is a measure of the ecosystem’s stated breadth, not a recommendation to buy dozens of games. Start with the titles you actually want and compare their cartridge cost separately from the handheld.

What EverSync and TATE mode mean for the decision

Blaze’s Nexus announcement lists EverSync local multiplayer sharing. The cited coverage does not detail the setup, game requirements, number of players, or whether multiple devices or copies of a game are needed. If local sharing is a deciding feature, treat it as an announced capability and look for specific compatibility and setup information before relying on it for a planned session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TATE mode is listed for both the Nexus and the original EXP. Its presence alone therefore does not distinguish the two models. The sources establish that the mode is included, but they do not provide enough detail to make claims about how every game uses it or how the display behaves during play. Choose between these handhelds on the features that do differ for your use, rather than counting TATE mode as a Nexus-only advantage.

The EXP guide also lists Wi-Fi for firmware updates. That is a stated maintenance feature, not evidence of an online game service or a broader internet-connected library. Nexus connectivity details beyond the announced wireless headphone support and EverSync feature are not specified in the cited coverage.

EverSync may appeal most to buyers who expect to use local multiplayer sharing, but the name alone does not answer the practical questions that can affect a purchase. The announcement coverage does not spell out how sharing is started, which games support it, or what other equipment is required. If that feature is central to your decision, wait for clear setup and compatibility details rather than counting it as a guaranteed fit for a specific game night.

Should you buy now, wait, or look for a used EXP?

Wait for the Nexus if you can wait for its scheduled launch

At the October 12, 2026 information date used here, the Nexus is still forthcoming, with October 30, 2026 announced as its scheduled release date. Tom’s Guide published a hands-on report on October 8, but that prelaunch coverage does not establish post-launch availability, real-world performance or long-term reliability. If you want its larger screen, twin analogue sticks or included Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack, waiting gives you the opportunity to assess the retail product rather than buying another model based on features the Nexus is designed to offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a used EXP if its specific extras matter now

If you need hardware before the Nexus’s scheduled date, or if Mini HDMI output and the 18 built-in Capcom games are your priorities, a second-hand original EXP is the relevant option in this comparison. Check the individual listing carefully because the guide’s second-hand availability statement does not guarantee stock, condition, seller reliability or a fair price where you live.

Decide what evidence you need before paying

  1. Write down your non-negotiable feature. Choose between a larger announced screen and twin analogue sticks, versus a stated HDMI TV connection or built-in Capcom collection. This prevents a headline specification from outweighing the feature you will actually use.
  2. Check the calendar. If you can wait beyond October 30, 2026, the Nexus is the upcoming option. If you need a device earlier, the original EXP’s second-hand route may be more relevant.
  3. Price the library separately. Count cartridges you already own, the included games for the model you are considering, and the additional titles you expect to purchase. Do not treat ecosystem compatibility or the Nexus’s announced cartridge count as a bundle of all those games.
  4. For a used EXP, inspect the exact item. Confirm condition, included items and working ports with the seller. Compare local listings because no verified market price is established here.
  5. For a Nexus purchase, verify the release-day offer. The $199.99 / £169.99 figures are announced prices. Confirm the actual price, regional availability and package contents with the seller when ordering.

What is not established by the published specifications

A feature list can identify reasons to prefer one device, but it cannot answer every ownership question. The cited material does not provide a controlled comparison of the two handhelds’ battery life, ergonomics, display quality, input latency or long-term reliability. It also does not establish final Nexus availability, later retailer pricing, the details of EverSync setup, or verified used EXP prices. Avoid treating any of those as settled facts based on the announced specifications.

For the same reason, this comparison does not name a universal performance winner. The Nexus has the stronger announced case for a larger display and twin analogue input; the EXP has established TV output and a built-in Capcom library. Which is the better purchase depends on whether those differences match your own games, setup and timing.

Recommendation by type of buyer

  • Wait for the Nexus if you want the larger announced 5.89-inch screen, twin analogue sticks, wireless headphone support or EverSync local sharing, and can wait until its scheduled launch.
  • Look for an original EXP if 720p Mini HDMI TV output or the 18 built-in Capcom games are more valuable to you than buying a new upcoming model, and you are comfortable evaluating used hardware.
  • Use your existing cartridge collection as the tie-breaker if you already own Evercade games. Both models support the physical ecosystem, so the choice can come down to which hardware features better suit the way you play.
  • Do not choose on unverified performance assumptions. The available specifications do not establish battery, comfort, image-quality or reliability differences.

What is the announced Evercade Nexus price?

The announced price is $199.99 / £169.99. Treat that as the stated launch figure, not a guarantee of local retailer pricing, stock or later offers; confirm the price and package contents with the seller when ordering.

Does the original Evercade EXP have HDMI output?

Yes. Evercade Info Central’s guide lists Mini HDMI output to a TV at 720p for the original EXP. The cited Nexus announcement coverage does not state whether Nexus has TV output.

What games come with the Nexus and the original EXP?

The Nexus is announced with a physical Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack. The original EXP has 18 Capcom games built in. Both also support Evercade cartridges, but additional cartridges are separate purchases and the two included-game offers are not the same.

Can I use my Evercade cartridges with either handheld?

Both are part of the physical Evercade cartridge ecosystem. Blaze’s Nexus announcement describes compatibility with more than 80 cartridges and more than 700 retro games; the original EXP guide lists full cartridge compatibility. Those counts describe the compatible library, not all the games included with the hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which is better if I want to play on a TV?

The original EXP is the option with a stated TV connection: Mini HDMI output at 720p. The cited Nexus coverage does not establish TV output, so check for a confirmed specification if it becomes a requirement.

Is the original Evercade EXP still sold new, and what does it cost used?

Evercade Info Central’s guide says the original EXP is no longer sold new and can be found second-hand. No current used-market price is established here, so compare local listings and check the condition, included items and working ports of the exact unit.

Is the Nexus screen better than the EXP screen?

The Nexus is announced with a 5.89-inch IPS display; the original EXP guide lists a 4.3-inch IPS display at 800 × 480. The cited coverage does not give the Nexus resolution or provide controlled comparisons of image quality, comfort or battery life, so the size figures alone do not prove an overall screen-quality winner.

The Bottom Line

Wait for the Evercade Nexus if you want its announced 5.89-inch screen, twin analogue sticks, wireless headphone support or Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack and can wait until its scheduled October 30, 2026 launch. Choose a used original EXP if its 720p Mini HDMI output or 18 built-in Capcom games matter more and you are prepared to check the condition and price of a specific unit. Both use the Evercade cartridge ecosystem, so count the games you already own and the cartridges you would actually buy; neither console purchase includes the entire compatible library.

The Nexus price is announced at $199.99 / £169.99, while no current used EXP price is established. Published specifications do not settle battery life, comfort, image quality or long-term reliability, so the best choice is the one whose confirmed features fit your setup and timing.
