Google Teachable Machine lets you train a small machine-learning model in a web browser without writing code. You provide labeled examples of images, sounds or body poses, click Train, test the result with new examples, and export the model for a website, app or physical-device experiment. The tool is free to use and is best understood as a hands-on classifier builder—not a replacement for a large, general-purpose AI system.

What Google Teachable Machine actually does

Teachable Machine is a supervised-classification tool. You define classes—such as “mug” and “book”—then supply examples for each class. Its neural network learns patterns that distinguish those labels and predicts the most likely class for an unfamiliar example.

The current interface lists release 2.4.16 (accessed October 14, 2026) and supports three project types:

Project type Examples you provide Capture options Typical result
Image Photographs or other pictures Upload files or use a webcam A model that classifies new images
Sound One-second audio samples Upload files or use a microphone A model that recognizes sound classes
Pose Body-position examples Live camera capture A model that distinguishes poses

Training takes place in the browser. Google’s description says examples remain on your computer unless you choose to save the project to Google Drive. The original launch description likewise says image data is processed locally on the device rather than sent to a server. Treat the optional Drive save as a separate decision: it stores your project for later access, while local browser training is the default privacy posture.

How to train a model without coding

  1. Choose a project type. Open Teachable Machine and select Image, Audio or Pose.
  2. Create labeled classes. Rename the starter classes so each label describes one category your model must recognize. Begin with two clearly different classes for a quick demonstration; add more only when the basic setup works.
  3. Gather examples. Upload files or capture examples from the available webcam or microphone controls. For sound projects, each example is a one-second clip. Vary angle, distance, lighting, background, speaker and timing where those conditions will change in real use.
  4. Train. Click the training control and wait for the browser to finish. The model learns from the examples associated with each class; it does not acquire a general understanding of every object, sound or movement.
  5. Test on new data. Use examples that were not part of training. Try the conditions in which you expect the model to run, and watch for confident but incorrect predictions.
  6. Export. Use the export option to download or host the model, then connect it to a website, app or physical-machine project. Export is what turns a browser experiment into something another program can use.

Make the examples representative

A model can appear successful while merely memorizing clues in the training set. If every “mug” photo has the same table behind it, the classifier may learn the table rather than the mug. Include variation that should not change the label, while keeping the classes themselves meaningfully distinct.

  • For images, vary viewpoint, scale, lighting and background.
  • For audio, record different distances, rooms and voices, and include quiet background conditions you expect in practice.
  • For poses, try more than one person, camera distance and natural stance.
  • Hold out genuinely new examples for testing instead of reusing training captures.

When errors occur, add examples that resemble the failures and retrain. A larger, more varied set is generally more useful than many near-duplicate captures.

Choosing the right input and equipment

You do not need to buy hardware: files can be uploaded for image and sound projects. Live capture is useful when you want the model to react to the real environment.

Goal Practical choice Why it helps
Recognize objects or scenes live USB webcam Provides the webcam stream supported by image projects
Recognize short sounds USB microphone Provides microphone input for one-second audio examples
Control a physical sorting experiment Arduino-compatible starter kit or similar maker hardware Extends an exported model into a device project

Google’s examples include Tiny Sorter, built around Arduino, and Teachable Sorter, built around Coral. These are extensions for makers, not prerequisites for creating a model in the browser.

  • Through 26 model-building exercise, gain hands-on experience with gears and all six classic simple machines: wheels and axles, levers, pulleys, inclined Planes, screws, and wedges.
  • Durable, modular construction system is compatible with building pieces in other construction, physics, and engineering kits from Thames & Kosmos.
  • Learn how simple machines are all around us (the flagpole at school, the wheelbarrow in your backyard, The seesaw at the playground!) and how they're used to make complex tasks easier to do.
  • Includes a specially designed spring scale so that you can measure how the machines change the direction and magnitude of forces.
  • A 32-page, full-color illustrated manual guides model building with step-by-step instructions and provides fun, engaging scientific information.

What you can build after export

Exported models can power a browser demonstration, a custom website, an app or a physical-machine experiment. A beginner might classify recyclable objects, identify a few hand signals, or trigger an action when a particular sound is heard. Keep the class list and test conditions narrow enough that the model’s behavior is understandable and debuggable.

Simple browser demonstration

Train two image classes, export the model and attach it to a page that displays the predicted label from a webcam frame. This is the quickest way to show the complete gather–train–test–export cycle.

Privacy, limits and realistic expectations

Browser-local training is a useful privacy feature, but it does not make every workflow private: saving a project to Google Drive uploads that saved project, and exporting or hosting a model makes it available wherever you place it. Check what your project contains before sharing it, especially when examples include people’s faces or voices.

Teachable Machine is optimized for quick experiments and prototypes. It does not publish a universal accuracy guarantee, and no authoritative current user-count or benchmark is established. Performance depends on the examples, labels and operating conditions you choose. A high training result is not proof that the model will work on unfamiliar data.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • Predictions follow the background: collect examples with varied backgrounds and retrain.
  • Classes are confused: make labels more visually or acoustically distinct, then add representative examples of the confusing cases.
  • Live capture is unavailable: check browser permission for the webcam or microphone, or switch to uploaded files.
  • Audio results are unstable: keep clips to the supported one-second format and test with the same room noise and microphone position expected during use.
  • The model works only on the original samples: create a fresh test set and add variation before exporting.

Who should use it

Teachable Machine is a strong starting point for students, educators, hobbyists and developers who want to understand the machine-learning cycle by building something visible in minutes. It is less suitable when you need a production-grade model, broad world knowledge, strict reliability or a formal accuracy evaluation. For those requirements, you will need a larger data pipeline and specialized model-development tools.

The Bottom Line

Google Teachable Machine is the simplest way to experience the full AI workflow—label examples, train in your browser, test on unfamiliar inputs and export the result—without coding or paying for the tool. Start with two classes, vary your examples, and treat every prediction as a testable prototype rather than a guarantee.
