An evening slowdown can come from busy devices at home or competing Wi-Fi networks nearby, but the timing alone does not prove your internet provider is uninvolved. Compare repeated tests across time, location, and—if possible—wired versus Wi-Fi connections before deciding what to fix.

Why does Wi-Fi often feel slower in the evening?

More people may be using your home network at once: streaming, video calls, downloads, gaming, and background updates all share its capacity. Nearby networks can also add wireless congestion. But broadband service itself can vary by time of day, so an evening pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis. Ofcom notes that broadband speed can vary by day and time, while Google recommends checking household conditions and asking your ISP about service issues.

Wi-Fi is only one part of the path between a device and an online service. Performance can depend on your subscribed service, modem and router, the device’s wireless capability, distance, walls, router placement, the Wi-Fi band in use, simultaneous household activity, and interference from other networks. A slow result on one phone in one room does not by itself show where the bottleneck is.

How to find where the slowdown is happening

  1. Repeat the test at different times. Use the same device and speed-test service where possible. Test during the usual slow period and again when the connection feels faster. Record the time, location, device, Wi-Fi band if known, and result. Ofcom advises testing more than once because speeds can vary.
  2. Compare two locations. Test near the router, then in the room where the problem is most noticeable. A much better result close to the router points toward a local wireless coverage or interference issue; distance and barriers can weaken Wi-Fi.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, if practical. Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and test under similar conditions. If wired performance remains strong while Wi-Fi is slow, focus first on the wireless link or local Wi-Fi conditions. If both wired and wireless results fall at the same time, the router, modem, or provider connection may also be involved. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not conclusive proof of a single cause.
  4. Check which band the device uses. Confirm whether it is connected on 2.4, 5, or 6 GHz, and whether the device supports the faster bands. Band choice can change speed and coverage.
  5. Look for competing activity and nearby networks. Note whether several people or devices are streaming, downloading, or on calls during the slowdown. The FCC explains that simultaneous device use can affect performance and that nearby networks may have an impact. Microsoft also identifies channel congestion as a factor and describes checking channels with a network analyzer.
  6. Contact your ISP if results remain unexpectedly low. Share the times and results you recorded, including whether wired tests were also slow, and ask the provider to check service performance. Google includes contacting the ISP in its troubleshooting guidance.

Which Wi-Fi band should you use?

No band is best for every device and room. The right choice depends on the device’s capabilities, its distance from the router, and the walls or other obstacles in between.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Band Typical trade-off When it may fit
2.4 GHz Generally reaches farther and works better through obstacles, but typically offers slower throughput and fewer non-overlapping channels. Devices farther from the router or separated by walls, especially when they do not support newer bands.
5 GHz Can offer faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels, but has shorter range and weaker performance through obstacles. Compatible devices relatively close to the router, where the stronger signal is available.
6 GHz Can provide strong performance nearby, but range is shorter and both the router and device must support it. Compatible newer devices close to a compatible router.

These are general trade-offs, not a guarantee of a particular speed. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance explains how bands, obstacles, placement, and channel congestion can affect a connection.

What can you change at home?

Improve router placement

Place the router where its signal can reach the areas where people actually use devices. Avoid burying it in a corner or putting obstacles between it and the rooms that need coverage. Repeat your location comparison after moving it so you can see whether coverage improved.

Check whether the problem is coverage or congestion

An extender may help when tests show a weak signal in a particular area. It is less likely to solve a slowdown affecting devices near the router or a wired connection as well. Adding equipment without identifying a coverage gap can leave the actual cause untouched.

Consider router capability only after testing

An outdated or under-capable router can limit performance. The FCC recommends checking the router model against the speed of the subscribed service. Before replacing it, confirm that the router is the bottleneck: new equipment cannot correct a problem elsewhere in the service path. If the router is inadequate or no longer receives updates, a replacement or provider-rented router may be worth considering.

When should you suspect the ISP?

Consider a provider-side problem when repeated tests remain low at different times and locations, especially if a wired test to the router also slows down. That pattern does not prove the provider is at fault, but it gives you useful evidence to share when asking the ISP to investigate. If wired results are consistently good while Wi-Fi is poor, first look at the router’s placement, band, device limits, household traffic, and nearby interference.

Keep your notes specific: the test time, device, location, connection type, and result. That makes it easier to distinguish an occasional fluctuation from a recurring problem and gives your provider more useful information than a single speed-test result.
