EV fast charging is advancing through several parts of the car at once: battery cells, pack voltage, power electronics and charging networks. The headline minutes-per-charge claims are not directly comparable, and they do not tell you what every driver will experience. Charge time depends on the state-of-charge window, battery temperature, the vehicle’s limits and whether a compatible, working high-power charger is available.

Why faster EV charging is a whole-system challenge

A battery pack contains hundreds or thousands of cells. Those cells must accept current safely and shed the heat that charging produces; a higher-voltage architecture can help deliver power with less current, but it cannot make the cells’ own limits disappear. The International Energy Agency (IEA) identifies cell capability and cooling as central constraints on faster charging.

Most battery-electric cars have historically used systems around 400 volts. Higher-voltage systems are expanding: the IEA counted more than 30 new high-voltage electric-car models released globally in 2025, over 80% of them from Chinese manufacturers. It also described 2025 as a turning point that included the first 1,000-volt models and megawatt-scale charging for passenger cars. That is a count of model releases, not a measure of sales or of how many drivers can access compatible chargers. See the IEA’s overview of ultra-fast charging batteries.

Higher voltage can reduce the current needed to deliver a given amount of power and can lower cabling losses. It also places greater demands on power electronics and component quality. C-rate describes charge or discharge current relative to a cell’s capacity; a high C-rate claim alone does not reveal how long a battery can sustain that rate, under what conditions, or across which state-of-charge range.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Charging is a chain: the cell and pack must accept the power, the vehicle’s electronics and cooling must manage it, and the station and grid must supply it. A fast charger cannot make a vehicle charge faster than its own system permits.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

There is no single time that applies to all EVs. A useful claim gives both the starting and ending state of charge—for example, 10% to 70%—and identifies the compatible vehicle and charger. A shorter window such as 10%–70% is not equivalent to 10%–80% or 10%–97%; it covers less energy and may avoid the slower part of a charge.

Before treating two figures as comparable, check:

  • Charge window: the exact starting and ending percentages.
  • Temperature: ambient and battery temperatures, which affect how much power the battery can safely accept.
  • Vehicle and charger: the compatible car, pack and station, not just a charger’s maximum rating.
  • Power over time: whether a figure is peak output or power sustained through the charge window.
  • Evidence stage: a company claim, a development-vehicle test or independently verified performance.

A charger’s maximum output is not the same as the power a car receives throughout a session. The vehicle, battery condition and charging system all shape the result. So a peak-kilowatt figure, without a charge window and test conditions, is a poor predictor of a driver’s total stop time.

What manufacturers are claiming—and what the figures establish

The figures below describe different charge windows and stages of development. They are not results from a head-to-head test, and the announcements do not establish matching test temperatures or independently verified consumer-car performance across all entries.

Company or program Reported figure What the evidence says
BYD Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging BYD says 10%–70% takes five minutes and 10%–97% takes nine minutes; its stated charger output is up to 1,500 kW. These are BYD’s claims for its compatible battery, vehicle and charger system, not a universal benchmark. BYD describes Blade Battery 2.0 as LFP and says it raises energy density by 5% while enabling faster charging. Its 5 March 2026 announcement also reports 4,239 FLASH stations installed in China as of that date and a plan for 20,000 by the end of 2026. The station count and year-end figure are respectively a dated company report and a plan, not independently confirmed coverage. BYD said European introduction was planned with the DENZA Z9GT; specifications were still to come in that announcement.
CATL third-generation Qilin CATL claims 280 Wh/kg cell energy density, 1,000 km of range and 10C charging. These are manufacturer product claims in CATL’s 2026 announcement. The cited announcement does not establish an independently verified consumer vehicle or a comparable charge-window result.
Toyota battery roadmap Toyota’s 2023 roadmap targets 10%–80% charging in 20 minutes or less for a performance battery, 30 minutes or less for a popularization LFP battery, and 10 minutes or less for an all-solid-state battery. These are scheduled company targets, not current retail specifications or confirmed launch performance. Toyota’s 2023 battery roadmap does not make the target times directly comparable with the other charge windows in this table.
Stellantis and Factorial solid-state program The partners reported 375 Wh/kg and 15%–90% charging in 18 minutes for cell demonstrations conducted in 2025. In June 2026, they said they had integrated FEST solid-state cells into a Dodge Charger Daytona development vehicle and begun road tests. The vehicle testing is intended to assess performance, safety and reliability; the earlier cell demonstration figures are not validated production-car results. See the 11 June 2026 announcement.
Geely A company-announced 10%–70% time of 4.5 minutes and 10%–97% time of 8 minutes 40 seconds. The Associated Press reported these figures on 24 September 2026 as a company announcement. They are not presented as an independent comparison with other manufacturers’ results. See the AP report.

Read a minute figure together with its endpoint percentages and evidence stage. For instance, a 10%–70% claim cannot be ranked directly against a 10%–97% claim: the latter covers a different portion of the battery. The sources cited here do not provide a common independent test across these systems.

Why the fast-charging race is not waiting for solid-state batteries

Fast charging is advancing with existing battery chemistries, not only with future solid-state cells. LFP accounted for over 55% of global EV battery deployment in 2025, up from nearly 50% in 2024, according to the IEA’s 2026 battery analysis. Those figures describe global deployment, not the share of vehicles that can use a particular ultra-fast charging system.

BYD’s claim that its Blade Battery 2.0 is an LFP battery with 5% higher energy density and faster charging is specific to that company’s product; the IEA’s deployment figures do not independently test it. More broadly, manufacturers are pursuing charging alongside range, weight, cost and production goals, rather than optimizing one metric in isolation.

Solid-state batteries remain in development even as vehicle testing begins. The IEA says production is more complex and costly than for lithium-ion batteries and that pack integration brings stricter mechanical requirements. It expects all-solid-state batteries to remain limited to premium segments until the first half of the 2030s. Toyota’s 2023 commercialization and charging targets are a company roadmap, not independent confirmation that those milestones will be met.

Can fast charging damage an EV battery?

Fast charging subjects cells to high current and heat, so battery design, temperature management and charging controls matter. The available claims do not establish a universal lifespan effect or a reliable ranking of the long-term durability of the systems discussed here.

BYD reports safety tests for its own battery, while Stellantis and Factorial say road testing of their development vehicle is underway. Neither establishes comparative lifetime performance across competing batteries. A charging-time announcement or a safety-test claim should not be treated as proof that frequent ultra-fast charging has no effect on battery health—or that it will damage every EV in the same way.

What could limit real-world adoption?

Compatible chargers must be available and reliable

A vehicle with high charging capability can use that capability only when it reaches a compatible station that is working and available. BYD’s reported FLASH station count is for China and as of 5 March 2026; its announced 20,000 figure was a plan for year-end 2026, not a completed count. Its announcement said European introduction was planned, but did not yet supply the vehicle specifications.

The grid must support high-power sites

Ultra-fast charging increases the importance of local electricity supply and grid resilience. The IEA says widespread, reliable ultra-fast chargers and resilient grids are needed for consumers to benefit. The AP reported in September 2026 that much of China’s public charging infrastructure was below one megawatt at the time, while the top charging claims rely on higher power; it also reported analyst concerns about network expansion and grid upgrades. A vehicle’s headline charging capability does not by itself show where, or how often, that power will be available.

Charging access is not the same as consumer preference

Charging claims and infrastructure counts show product and network activity, not how much buyers are willing to pay for faster charging. The cited sources do not establish an independent consumer survey measuring willingness to pay for it. AP quoted China auto-industry analyst Lei Xing saying, “China is way, way, way ahead in terms of multiple players engaged in the charging competition.” That describes competition among companies, not a measured consumer preference.

How to judge the next fast-charging announcement

  • Find the start and end state-of-charge percentages before comparing the time.
  • Check whether the number comes from a cell, a development vehicle or a retail model.
  • Look for the vehicle, charger, temperature and sustained-power details; if an announcement does not state them, do not assume them.
  • Separate a manufacturer’s claim or roadmap target from an independently verified result.
  • Ask whether compatible chargers are deployed where the vehicle will be used, and whether local grid capacity can support them.
  • Treat battery-life comparisons as unsettled unless they come from comparable long-term evidence.
