Start Euro Truck Simulator 2 with Quick Jobs, a small set of well-bound controls and short, forgiving routes. You do not need a steering wheel or your own truck on day one. Use the borrowed trucks to learn turning, braking, navigation, fuelling and parking; then buy a dependable truck only after your income and driving routine are predictable.

What to do in your first ETS2 session

Your first objective is not to build a large fleet. It is to complete enough low-risk deliveries that the driving loop becomes automatic: read the job, plan the route, control the truck, deliver without damage and understand what the payout really leaves you.

  1. Create a profile and open the controls menu. Bind only the actions you will use every few minutes. You can refine the layout later instead of trying to memorise every truck function immediately.
  2. Take several Quick Jobs. These provide a loaded truck, fuel and the employer’s operating responsibilities. They are the safest way to learn without a loan, repair bill or truck purchase.
  3. Choose short, forgiving routes. Check the deadline, cargo, truck type and destination city before accepting. Avoid combining a difficult trailer with an unfamiliar city or depot while you are still learning.
  4. Preview the route. Use the Route Advisor and map to look ahead for junctions, motorway exits and the entrance to the destination. Slow down before the turn rather than trying to save the corner with a sharp correction.
  5. Practise the delivery approach. Use assisted parking while you learn the camera and trailer geometry. Switch to manual parking when you want deliberate reversing practice.
  6. Stop when the truck asks for fuel or rest. Treat fuel stations and rest prompts as part of route planning, not as interruptions to ignore.

The game released on 19 October 2012, and SCS Software’s factsheet-era description lists more than 60 European cities. City layouts, expansions and features can change, so rely on the route information shown in your current game rather than memorising an old map.

Understand the three ways to find work

The job screen separates your financial exposure from your earning potential. The safest progression is to learn with borrowed equipment, then accept the costs that come with ownership when you can absorb them.

Job source Truck ownership Who pays operating costs Beginner use
Quick Jobs Employer’s truck Employer provides the truck and covers the operating responsibilities Best starting point for learning controls, traffic, fuel stops and parking
Company Jobs You must own a truck You pay for fuel and repairs and must reach the depot with your truck Use after buying a truck and keeping a cash reserve
Freight Market You use your own truck You carry the normal ownership costs Planning tool for comparing offers, cargo, distance and destination before committing

Quick Jobs: the low-risk on-ramp

The official Euro Truck Simulator 2 manual describes the trade-off plainly: “The quick ones don’t pay much, but your employer provides for everything.” A Quick Job gives you a loaded vehicle and removes the early burden of fuel, repairs and truck finance. The lower payout is the price of that protection. Use several jobs to learn wide turns, braking distance, lane discipline, rest prompts and the shape of a delivery yard.

Company Jobs: better rates with real exposure

Company Jobs become available after you own a truck. They generally offer better rates, but the manual explains that you are responsible for fuel and repairs and for reaching the depot. A high displayed payment is not the same as profit: a long route, damage, a fuel stop, loan interest or an empty repositioning trip can reduce what remains.

Freight Market: plan instead of grabbing the nearest load

Cargo can be taken at a depot, but the manual recommends using Freight Market and planning ahead to find the best deals around. Compare distance, deadline, cargo handling, destination and the route back toward useful cities. This turns a delivery into a decision rather than an impulse purchase. If you are still learning, select an uncomplicated route even when another offer has a larger headline payout.

The controls you actually need first

Keyboard, gamepad and wheel inputs are supported. A wheel is optional; a keyboard or controller is enough to learn the complete early-career loop. Start with controls that affect every few seconds of driving, then add specialist functions as your workload grows.

Priority Controls to bind Why they matter
First pass Steering, throttle, brake, indicators, headlights, cruise control, Route Advisor, camera reset These cover lane position, speed, visibility, signalling and navigation without searching a menu while moving
Next Wipers, parking-brake control and camera views Weather, stopping and trailer visibility become easier to manage
After the basics Retarder, engine brake, trailer attach/detach, mirror controls and additional trailer functions These reduce workload on hills, during coupling and when manoeuvring larger combinations

Set up a usable keyboard or controller profile

  1. Open the controls menu before accepting a job and confirm that steering, throttle and brake inputs move in the expected direction.
  2. Place indicators, lights, cruise control and the Route Advisor on keys or buttons you can reach without taking attention from the road.
  3. Assign a camera-reset control. Recovering a useful view quickly is safer than driving while searching through camera positions.
  4. Add wipers and parking controls before your first night or rain-heavy route.
  5. Once single-trailer driving feels natural, assign retarder, engine-brake, mirror and trailer controls.

A wheel and pedals can make steering smoother and give you more gradual throttle and brake input, but buying one is an upgrade for comfort and immersion, not a prerequisite. Reporting around the current development cycle also describes a planned Multi-Function Display intended to reduce the burden of ETS2’s large control set; treat that as an update feature, not hardware you must own to start.

Drive defensively: the habits that prevent expensive mistakes

Brake before the corner

Brake earlier than your instincts suggest, especially downhill or with a heavy trailer. Enter a junction at a speed that leaves room to correct without crossing lanes. Once the trailer begins to swing, a sharp steering correction can create a second problem on the other side of the turn.

Make room for the trailer

Signal early, check mirrors before changing lanes and begin wide turns with the trailer’s path in mind. The cab can clear a corner while the trailer clips a kerb, barrier or vehicle. A slower entry is usually faster than recovering from damage or a blocked junction.

Use the Route Advisor as an active instrument

Look at the next turn, lane guidance and destination entrance before you reach them. If a city exit or depot approach is unfamiliar, reduce speed while you still have options. The map is most useful before a mistake, not after a missed turn.

Recover calmly when a delivery goes wrong

  • Pull over safely instead of stopping in a live lane.
  • Check the Route Advisor for the next legal route and confirm whether you are still within the deadline.
  • Refuel or repair when the warning is relevant; continuing with an unsafe or damaged truck can cost more than the stop.
  • Resume at a controlled speed and avoid compounding one missed turn with rushed corrections.

The game saves automatically frequently, according to the manual. A manual save is still sensible before an unfamiliar manoeuvre, a difficult parking attempt or a major financial decision.

Practise parking and manoeuvring before taking specialised loads

Parking is a separate skill from highway driving because the trailer responds slowly and the camera can distort your sense of angle. Assisted parking is a valid learning aid: use it while you build a mental picture of how steering changes the trailer, then choose manual parking for focused practice.

SCS Software’s 1.58 Driving Academy, released on 12 February 2026, adds guided scenarios for forward driving, manoeuvring and double-trailer reversing. Start with the single-trailer routine in ordinary jobs; move to the Academy’s double-trailer module when you can position a normal trailer without repeated jack-knifing. The guided format gives you a structured place to practise instead of risking a valuable load.

A simple parking routine

  1. Approach the yard slowly and identify the marked bay before committing.
  2. Set up as straight as the entrance allows; a good initial angle reduces the amount of reverse steering required.
  3. Use mirrors and a stable camera view, making small corrections rather than holding a large steering input.
  4. Pause if the trailer angle becomes confusing. Pull forward to reset the combination instead of forcing a bad reverse.
  5. Choose assisted parking when the delivery is time-sensitive and manual parking when the priority is practice.

Manage early money without starving your company

Early cash flow is fragile. Fuel, repairs, loan commitments and a truck purchase can consume money faster than a new driver expects. Keep a reserve before cosmetic upgrades, expensive accessories or rapid fleet expansion.

When to buy your first truck

Buy when you can pay for a dependable truck and still cover likely fuel, repairs and scheduled commitments. The first truck does not need every cosmetic option. Reliability and a remaining cash buffer are more valuable than appearance while your route choices and driving accuracy are still changing.

Evaluate profit, not the displayed payout

  • Subtract fuel exposure for the route and any detour you are likely to make.
  • Allow for repairs after collisions or rough manoeuvres.
  • Include loan interest or other recurring commitments if you financed the truck.
  • Consider whether you must drive empty to reach the next useful load.
  • Value experience and skill progress, not only the immediate cash, when two safe offers are close.

Expand in stages

Garages, trucks and hired drivers form the long-term company-management loop. Add capacity after the first truck and job routine are stable, not simply because a purchase is available. The 1.58 management improvements make driver-skill progress and manager information easier to inspect, so revisit those screens when deciding whether another truck or driver will genuinely improve your operation.

Choose skills that match the jobs you enjoy

Skills unlock more job categories and longer routes. There is no single developer-mandated order that is best for every player. A practical approach is to choose skills that support the cargo and distances you already enjoy, then add distance or cargo specialisations as your routine improves.

Your preference How to steer skill choices What to watch
Short local deliveries Prioritise options that broaden nearby cargo choices before chasing the longest routes More variety can be worth more than distance if you are still learning city approaches
Long motorway runs Add distance-oriented progress after basic control and braking habits are reliable Longer jobs magnify fuel planning, fatigue and missed-turn costs
Special or fragile cargo Invest in the cargo specialisations that open the loads you specifically want Higher complexity makes careful turning and parking more important

Consider experience, cash, skills and future company capacity together. A lower-paying job that safely advances a useful skill may be a better choice than a risky high-payout load.

A repeatable beginner decision checklist

Use this checklist before accepting a job or spending company money:

  • Can I explain the next two turns and the destination entrance from the map?
  • Is the route short and forgiving enough for my current trailer and parking ability?
  • Have I read the deadline and cargo details rather than judging the payout alone?
  • For an owned-truck job, can my reserve cover fuel, repairs and any loan commitment?
  • Do I have the controls I need for lights, indicators, cruise control, camera, wipers and parking?
  • Would assisted parking reduce risk, or am I deliberately choosing manual parking for practice?
  • After delivery, will this job improve cash, experience, a relevant skill or a useful return position?

Following that sequence keeps the early game focused: learn with borrowed equipment, plan work through Freight Market, buy ownership only when the numbers are comfortable, and expand the company after your driving is repeatable.
