Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) can run on a relatively small dedicated-server machine, but the exact hardware depends on player count, mods and whether you need a public listing. Install the dedicated-server application with SteamCMD, open the required game ports, and add a Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) when the server must appear in the public browser.
The figures published for ETS2 hosting are estimates rather than an official SCS Software hardware specification. Treat them as planning ranges, leave headroom for the operating system and mods, and test your intended player load before promising a particular capacity.

SCS added dedicated-server support for Convoy in December 2022. That support makes a separately managed server possible, but it does not turn vendor advertising claims into guaranteed capacity. Your practical limit will be determined by CPU time, available memory, network quality, mod set and the behavior of the players connected.
Are these official ETS2 hardware requirements?
No official SCS Software CPU, RAM or storage minimum was located for the dedicated server. The numbers commonly repeated online come from fan-maintained documentation and hosting companies, and they disagree. Use them as estimates, not as a certification that a particular virtual machine will support a specific number of players.

The conflict is significant: one source calls 2 GB a minimum, while a provider starts its plans at 4 GB. Neither source documents the test machine, operating system overhead, mod collection, network conditions or sustained load. Do not describe any of these numbers as the official “ETS2 server requirement.”
A sensible planning range
For a small private convoy, a dual-core host with at least 2 GB of RAM and roughly 5 GB of free disk space is a reasonable starting experiment. If the machine also runs a desktop, monitoring, backups or other services, reserve additional memory instead of treating 2 GB as an amount available entirely to ETS2.

The hosting tiers cited above put 2.5 cores and 4 GB of RAM around the 32–128-player category, but that should be read as a sales tier, not a promise that every 128-player convoy will be stable. Measure CPU usage, memory pressure, tick or simulation delays and disconnects while your real mod list is enabled.
Use the correct Steam app ID
The dedicated server is a separate Steam application from the game client. SCS Modding Wiki lists ETS2 Dedicated Server as app ID 1948160. The normal ETS2 client uses 227300; American Truck Simulator’s dedicated server is listed as 2239530.

Using 227300 in a server-management panel or container definition installs the client instead of the server. A Pterodactyl egg specifically warns that the wrong ID can cause startup failure. Check the ID before troubleshooting ports or configuration.
The SCS announcement from December 2022 also noted that the Dedicated Server tool is shown to owners of the game in Steam. If it is not visible in the Steam client, SteamCMD is the practical installation route rather than trying to force the client application to behave as a server.

How to install and prepare an ETS2 dedicated server

Choose and prepare the host
Use a machine with a stable wired or low-latency connection where possible. Reserve the planned disk space before downloading, and avoid placing the server in a directory that is routinely cleaned by temporary-file policies. If this is a home server, note its local IP address; you will need it when creating a router port-forwarding rule.

Install SteamCMD
Download and unpack SteamCMD for the operating system that will run the server. Open a terminal in the SteamCMD directory. On Windows this is commonly the SteamCMD executable; on Linux it is commonly the

Install app ID 1948160
Run the following command, replacing
<path>with the directory in which the server should be installed:steamcmd +force_install_dir <path> +login anonymous +app_update 1948160 +quitOn a shell that requires it, quote a path containing spaces. SteamCMD will download or update the dedicated-server files and then exit. If the output shows that a different app is being updated, stop and correct the ID before continuing.

Export the game packages
From an installed ETS2 game client, enable the in-game developer console, open that console and run
export_server_packages. This creates the package files the dedicated server needs. The console setting and generated-file location can vary by game version and operating system, so verify the path shown by the client rather than assuming a fixed folder. -
Copy the exported packages
Copy the package files produced by
export_server_packagesinto the dedicated server’s home or installation directory. Keep the package set synchronized with the game version you intend to host. A client updated to a newer build can be incompatible with an older server package set.Rank #4

Start the server once
Launch the dedicated-server executable supplied in the installation. On its first successful start, it should create
server_config.sii. Stop the process cleanly after generation, inspect the file, and set the server name, networking options and other settings required by your convoy. Do not overwrite a working configuration with a file from a different ETS2 release without checking the available fields. -
Open the network ports
Create inbound firewall rules for both TCP and UDP on ports
27015and27016, then apply equivalent port-forwarding rules on the router when the host is behind NAT. Community guides commonly cite this 27015–27016 range, but the effective ports are the ones configured by your server build. Add a GSLT for a public listing
Create a unique Steam Game Server Login Token for this server and place it in the server configuration as required by the current build. Community guidance says a unique token per server is needed for visibility in the public server browser. Keep the token private; do not paste it into forum posts, screenshots or shared configuration repositories. A private test server can be validated locally before you configure public listing.

Test with the intended content
Connect with the same ETS2 version and mod set that the server will use. Test a second player before inviting a full convoy, then watch the server log and operating-system resource counters while adding players. Record the CPU, RAM and bandwidth behavior so you can resize the host based on evidence from your own configuration.

Network, public listing and connectivity checks
Firewall versus router forwarding
Opening a port in the operating-system firewall is only one half of a home-hosted setup. If the server sits behind a router, the router must forward the selected TCP and UDP ports to the host’s current private address. A DHCP address change can silently break forwarding, so reserve the host’s local address or update the rule when it changes.
When the server does not appear publicly
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on the configured ports.
- Check both protocol rules: a TCP-only rule does not replace the UDP rule.
- Verify that the GSLT belongs to this server and has not been exposed or revoked.
- Check whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT; in that case, ordinary router forwarding may not provide an inbound public address.
- Confirm that the server and client versions, map content and required mods match.
Because the published port information is community-derived rather than a verified page-level SCS specification, treat a port change in a later server release as possible. Recheck the generated configuration and startup log after updates.

Mods, storage and updates
The base installation is often estimated at about 5 GB, while the Truck Simulator Wiki estimate recommends 10 GB or more when mods are present. That total is not a complete backup plan: exported packages, downloaded mod archives, logs and rollback copies consume additional space. Keep free capacity available so an update can download before old files are removed.
Apply updates deliberately. First record the current server version, package export and configuration. Update the dedicated-server app with SteamCMD, export packages again from a matching game client when required, start the server in a maintenance window and check for configuration-field changes. If a new build fails, restore the previous installation and package set rather than mixing files from two versions.

How many players can one ETS2 server host?
Convoy support is commonly described by hosting vendors as reaching up to 128 players, and one vendor’s RAM tiers divide capacity into 1–8, 8–32 and 32–128 players. Those figures are not an official SCS capacity guarantee and do not specify a repeatable hardware test. Player count alone is therefore a poor sizing formula.
Use the advertised tiers as a starting comparison, then validate your own workload. A lightly modded eight-player convoy may use fewer resources than a smaller group running complex traffic, map and physics modifications. Monitor sustained, not momentary, CPU and memory use, and leave enough headroom to avoid swapping or process termination when players join.
