Internet-exposed refrigeration controllers at French supermarkets were compromised in 2026, allowing attackers to alter operating settings and spoil food. The incident shows why unsupported firmware, exposed management interfaces and weak remote-access controls are an operational risk—not merely an IT issue.
What happened to the supermarkets
France’s CERT-FR reported “numerous compromises” involving remote refrigeration controllers. The bulletin named Danfoss AK-SM and AK-SC series systems and Copeland/Dixell XWeb. It warned that placing a management interface directly on the public Internet violates good practice and that attack campaigns might still be underway.
The Associated Press reported that attackers drove refrigeration temperatures to 50°C (122°F) for about six hours. Stores then had to discard fresh and frozen products. Intermarché said the losses across its operation reached “tens of millions of euros” in a single day.

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure told the Associated Press that about 700 of France’s 10,000 supermarkets were affected. The reporting also described hundreds of supermarkets and independent stores as involved. Those figures describe France; they do not establish a Europe-wide victim count.

The Associated Press also cited an August report from Claroty that found numerous Danfoss controllers directly accessible from the public Internet. It reported that Danfoss and Copeland had since fixed the vulnerabilities described in the coverage. A fix for a reported vulnerability does not, by itself, bring a discontinued controller back into vendor support.
Why an exposed controller could change a store’s temperature
Remote management was reachable from the Internet
A refrigeration controller is an operational-technology device: it runs compressors, defrost cycles, alarms and temperature targets. If its management interface is reachable from the public Internet, an attacker can attempt to log in or exploit a software flaw without first entering the store or the corporate network. Physical security around cabinets and plant rooms does not protect an exposed network service.

Unsupported firmware removed the normal safety net
Older products may stop receiving security patches while remaining in daily service. That creates a gap between the equipment’s physical lifetime and its cybersecurity lifetime. In this case, public exposure and end-of-life software reinforced each other: an attacker had a network path to a controller that was no longer routinely updated.

The reported impact came from changing refrigeration behavior. A malicious temperature target can ruin stock even if the compressor hardware is undamaged. Defrost schedules and other configuration values can also affect product safety, energy use and equipment stress, which is why CERT-FR specifically instructed operators to verify them.

What CERT-FR says operators should do
- Remove public Internet exposure. Take the controller’s management interface off the open Internet. Do not treat an obscure port or a password as a substitute for network isolation.
- Verify every critical setting. Check temperature targets, alarm thresholds, defrost schedules, user accounts and other configuration values against an approved baseline.
- Restore remote access only through a protected path. Use a securely configured VPN or protected private network, with firewall rules that limit who can reach the controller.
- Update firmware where support exists. Apply the vendor’s current firmware and security guidance, and record the version and installation date.
- Enable strict security mode when available. Use the controller’s strongest authentication and access-control settings rather than compatibility-oriented defaults.
- Change default passwords. Replace factory credentials with unique, managed secrets and remove accounts that contractors no longer need.
- If compromise is suspected, reset and rebuild. Factory-reset the controller, reconfigure it from a trusted record, then apply the isolation, update, security-mode and credential controls above. Preserve relevant logs and coordinate the reset with the refrigeration integrator so safety settings are restored correctly.
How a supermarket should assess its remediation plan
Retailers can compare sites and contractors using the same evidence at every location. The goal is to prove that a controller is known, supported, unreachable from the public Internet and recoverable if it is tampered with.

What is known—and not known—about the losses
The reported 50°C setting lasted about six hours, according to the Associated Press. The estimate of “tens of millions of euros” came from Intermarché for one day, not from an audited Europe-wide assessment. A verified total for all affected European grocers was not publicly reported.

No perpetrator has been publicly identified. Europol said investigations were ongoing, so the incident should not be attributed to a particular state or criminal group without further evidence.

The European Commission says the Cyber Resilience Act entered into force on 10 December 2024. Its reporting obligations begin on 11 September 2026, and its main obligations apply from 11 December 2027. The Act requires manufacturers to address vulnerabilities over a product’s lifecycle, a policy direction directly relevant to long-lived refrigeration equipment.

Commissioner Thierry Breton summarized the supply-chain problem in 2022: “When it comes to cybersecurity, Europe is only as strong as its weakest link: be it a vulnerable Member State, or an unsafe product along the supply chain.” For grocers, that means procurement and maintenance decisions must include the controller’s future security support, not just cooling capacity and installation cost.
