You do not need to buy a new camera to take better Etsy listing photos: Etsy says a camera or smartphone can work. Start with soft, steady light and images that clearly show the item, its details, size, and appearance. Upgrade only if your current setup cannot handle a specific need, such as repeatable indoor lighting or close-up detail.
What camera should you use for Etsy product photos?
Use the phone or camera you already have if it can produce clear, in-focus images in good light. Etsy’s Product Photography Checklist treats both a camera and a smartphone as options; its guidance focuses on lighting, steady framing, planning, and useful views rather than requiring a particular model. There is no controlled phone-versus-camera comparison in the cited guidance, and it does not establish that buying a camera increases sales.
A dedicated camera may be worth considering if you need interchangeable lenses or more manual control. For small products, macro mode or a compatible macro lens can help capture details. Check lens compatibility before buying, and avoid digital zoom on a phone when it reduces image quality. Etsy’s Getting to Know Your Camera explains the roles of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance; understanding these controls can help you manage exposure and color, but a new camera is not a substitute for good light.

Can you use your phone for Etsy photography?
Yes. A phone can be a practical starting point for listing photos when you keep it steady, use soft light, and make sure the product is in focus. Clean the lens, frame the item without cutting off important parts, and move closer rather than relying on digital zoom if zooming noticeably softens the image. For tiny features, try your phone’s macro mode if it has one; otherwise, take a clear close-up without making the whole listing depend on a single detail shot.
A dedicated camera offers more lens and control choices, but it also adds cost and setup decisions. Choose based on a concrete limitation in your workflow—such as needing compatible macro optics or more control over exposure—not on an assumption that a camera body by itself will improve listing performance.

What lighting works for product photography?
Use soft, consistent light so the product is visible without harsh shadows or misleading color. Etsy’s checklist suggests placing a product near a sunny window, softening direct light with a sheer curtain, and using a reflector to brighten shadowed areas. If daylight is unreliable or unavailable, Etsy lists a light box or three softbox lights as options. Outdoors, overcast conditions can provide less harsh light than direct sun.

- Window light: A low-cost starting point when you have dependable daylight and a suitable space. A sheer curtain can soften direct sun; a reflector can fill shadows.
- Light box: A straightforward option for indoor small-item photography when sunlight is not available. Its enclosed setup can make repeatable shots easier, though it is suited to the size of products it can accommodate.
- Softboxes: Etsy lists a three-softbox setup for controlling shadows. It takes more room than a small light box but gives you separate lights to position around a product.
Avoid using flash and mixing natural and artificial light in the same setup: different light sources can make consistent color harder to achieve. Keep the light arrangement similar from one product shoot to the next if you want a cohesive shop appearance.

How do you keep Etsy listing photos sharp and well-framed?
Camera movement can make a photo look blurred, especially in lower light. Use a tripod that fits your phone or camera, or set the device on a stable surface. A sturdy shelf or a stack of books can work as a stand-in if you can frame the shot safely and consistently. Keep the product itself in focus, and check the image before moving on.

- A lifestyle view or group shot when it helps explain the item or its options.
Use uncluttered backgrounds such as seamless paper or fabric in colors that complement the product. Props can provide context, but should not obscure what is for sale. A collage may make the first image harder to interpret; Etsy recommends a clear first photo instead.
How should you crop and edit product photos?
Crop images so they work across different display shapes without cutting off important parts of the product. Etsy advises choosing images that work across multiple ratios. Make light adjustments for exposure, white balance, and clarity, but do not use filters or manipulations that change how the item looks. The listing image should represent the actual color and appearance as closely as practical.

Check edited photos on more than one screen when possible. Displays can show color differently, so a photo that looks accurate on one device may appear shifted on another. Etsy’s photo-editing guidance cautions against edits that distort a product’s appearance.
What size and file type should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy’s Seller Handbook article on listings recommends a clear, well-lit first image, multiple high-quality images, and an image at least 2000 pixels on its shortest side at 72 PPI. These are Etsy recommendations; check Etsy Help for current technical requirements before uploading because image guidance and display behavior can change.
Etsy Help currently lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and HEIC as supported image file types, but says animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported. It also says the first photo should be landscape or square and that the first image determines the shape of following photos.
