The Economic Times Startup Awards (ETSA) 2026, described as the awards’ 12th edition, put a changing Indian startup landscape in focus: companies moving toward public listings, founders tackling deep-tech and hardware challenges, and a sharper emphasis on sustainable growth and efficient use of capital. Those were themes reported from the Bengaluru gathering—not proof that the event or any single policy caused ecosystem growth.

What ETSA 2026 says about the startup landscape

The awards coverage frames the ecosystem as entering a different phase after a decade of expansion. The discussion looks beyond rapid scaling to the harder work of building durable businesses: preparing for public markets, developing technology and physical products over longer timelines, and balancing growth with profitability, sustainability and capital efficiency. The event report presents these as themes raised at the gathering, not as a measured verdict on every Indian startup.

That distinction matters. Award winners and conference discussions can offer a useful snapshot of what founders and investors are paying attention to, but they cannot by themselves establish that the whole sector has shifted or that a particular policy produced the change.

The ETSA 2026 winners

The event report lists winners in eight categories. The table reflects the names and category labels as reported; the awards organizer is the appropriate source for definitive confirmation.

Comeback Kid Mukund Jha of Emergent

The report says the jury, chaired by Wipro executive chairman Rishad Premji, selected the winners after deliberating for more than three hours on August 25. It does not establish the ceremony’s exact calendar date in the passage reviewed.

Three useful ways to read the stories behind the awards

The event report does not offer a formal scorecard for judging startups. A more useful way to connect its themes is to consider three distinct challenges that companies may face:

From private company to public listing

A public listing is a major transition, not simply another growth milestone. It brings a company into public-market scrutiny and changes the demands on reporting, governance and investor communication. The event’s focus on listings signals interest in that route; it does not establish that every award winner is listed or planning to list.

Building deep technology and hardware

Deep-tech and physical-hardware ventures often have to solve technical and product-development problems before they can scale. That can make their path different from a business that can expand mainly through software or distribution. The report highlights these challenges as part of the discussion, without supplying comparative timelines or outcomes for particular companies.

Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future
  • If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
  • The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.

Growing with discipline

Growth, profitability or sustainability, and efficient capital use are related but not interchangeable goals. A company can grow quickly while consuming substantial capital; another may prioritize a more measured path. The report’s emphasis on disciplined growth points to a question founders and investors must answer for each business: what pace and funding strategy support a durable company?

How public startup support is structured

Startup India began in 2016. A January 2026 article by M. S. Gowda describes several public support mechanisms, each aimed at a different part of the financing or founder-support landscape. Their existence describes the support architecture; it does not, on its own, show how much impact any program has had.

  • Fund of Funds for Startups: A public funding mechanism that supports startups through investment funds rather than acting as a direct grant to each startup.
  • Startup India Seed Fund Scheme: Seed-stage support intended to help eligible startups with early development and validation needs.
  • Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups: A mechanism intended to support access to debt by providing credit guarantees, rather than replacing a startup’s obligation to repay a loan.
  • Startup India Investor Connect Portal: A platform intended to connect startups with investors.
  • MAARG mentorship program: A mentorship initiative intended to connect founders with guidance and expertise.

The program descriptions and names above are reported by the January 2026 article. For eligibility, current terms and application details, consult the responsible government agency’s official material; the article does not establish those details.

What the reported startup figures do—and do not—show

M. S. Gowda’s January 2026 article reports that India had more than 2 lakh DPIIT-recognised startups as of December 2025, and that around 50% originated in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. These are figures as presented in that article; the original source for each statistic was not confirmed. They offer context for the scale and geographic reach being reported, but should not be treated as independently validated totals or as evidence that a particular award, event or government program caused startup growth.

A snapshot, not a final verdict

ETSA 2026 brings together recognition of individual founders and companies with a discussion about what it takes to build the next generation of Indian businesses. Its reported themes—public-market transitions, hard technology and hardware, and more disciplined growth—make the awards a useful snapshot of current ambitions and pressures. They do not settle the larger question of how the ecosystem is performing; that requires evidence beyond an awards gathering.
