Yes—many mesh Wi-Fi systems support Ethernet backhaul, a wired connection that carries traffic between the main router and compatible mesh nodes. The exact ports, setup order, and switch placement depend on your system and whether it is in router or access point mode, so check the instructions for your specific models before connecting cables.
What Ethernet backhaul does
Mesh backhaul is the link that carries traffic between the main router and satellite nodes. It can use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. With Ethernet backhaul, a physical cable connects compatible mesh units; it does not simply mean connecting a wired device to a node’s Ethernet port.
A wired link can keep inter-node traffic from competing for Wi-Fi airtime used by client devices. TP-Link says Deco stops using Wi-Fi backhaul between two units once it detects Ethernet, and notes that not every Deco unit needs to be wired: TP-Link’s Deco guidance says wired and wireless backhaul can be mixed on the same network. That behavior is specific to the documented system, not a guarantee for every mesh product.

Wiring a node does not guarantee faster internet or a particular speed. Results depend on the mesh hardware, Ethernet port speeds, cable, internet service, and any remaining wireless links. NETGEAR explains the potential benefit of avoiding competition between backhaul and client traffic in its wired-backhaul overview.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check compatibility before connecting anything
- Confirm that both the main unit and the intended satellite support Ethernet backhaul. A port may be intended only for wired client devices, and some mesh points have no Ethernet port.
- Check the exact model and generation in the manufacturer’s support documentation; features can differ within a product family.
- Identify whether the system is operating in router mode or access point/bridge mode. Wiring rules can change by mode.
- Check whether the manufacturer recommends setting up the mesh wirelessly before adding Ethernet.
For example, Google says Nest Wifi points have no Ethernet ports and cannot be hardwired. Its Google Wifi and Nest Wifi wiring guidance also illustrates a switch downstream of the primary Wifi router and warns against connecting a switch or another point to the primary device before setup is complete.

- Set up the mesh system as directed. Some systems require an initial wireless setup. TP-Link’s Deco instructions say to add all units to the same network wirelessly through the app, then connect Ethernet; backhaul activates automatically.
- Connect the specified ports. Port assignments vary. In its cited AiMesh instructions, ASUS shows a LAN port on the main router connected to a WAN port on the node and describes a setting to prioritize WAN/wired backhaul. Check the ASUS AiMesh guide for the applicable configuration.
- Add a switch only if needed. Put it at the point specified by the mesh manufacturer. In Deco router mode, satellites should connect to the main Deco’s LAN port or to a switch connected to that LAN port. Google’s illustrated setup places a switch downstream of the primary Wifi router.
- Verify the link. Check the mesh app or administration page for a wired connection status. If the node still reports Wi-Fi, test a different cable or port, then try connecting it directly before troubleshooting a switch.
Place switches according to the mesh topology
There is no single wiring layout that applies to every system. A switch connected on the wrong side of the main mesh router can create an invalid topology or network loop in some modes.
- Router mode: For Deco, connect satellites behind the main Deco—either to its LAN port or to a switch connected to that LAN port.
- Access point mode: Some systems permit different arrangements. TP-Link’s Deco directions distinguish router mode from access point mode; follow the arrangement for the mode you use.
- Managed switches: Switch settings, including VLAN configuration, can affect whether backhaul works. ASUS provides separate instructions for router mode, AP mode, managed switches, and VLAN settings in its AiMesh Ethernet backhaul guidance.
Google recommends an unmanaged switch or an appropriately configured managed switch in its wiring guidance. Do not combine diagrams from different manufacturers: use the topology instructions for your mesh system and mode.

Choose cabling and accessories
A Cat 5e-rated Ethernet cable is a sensible basic choice for supported setups. Google recommends at least Cat 5e, and ASUS recommends Cat 5e or greater in its cited switch configurations. The appropriate cable and achievable connection speed also depend on the Ethernet ports and the cable run.
An unmanaged Ethernet switch can add ports when the main router or a node does not have enough connections for satellites or wired devices. It is an accessory, not a fix for incompatible backhaul; its placement still has to match the system’s topology rules.

Wired or wireless backhaul?
Use Ethernet when the specific mesh units support it and you can run a practical cable route. Wireless backhaul avoids cabling and is simpler where a wired connection is impractical. Ethernet can avoid using Wi-Fi bandwidth for communication between connected nodes, but neither option is universally faster: port speeds, mesh design, client Wi-Fi, and internet service all affect performance.
Before choosing, check whether your model supports Ethernet backhaul, the speed and number of its ports, whether you need a compatible switch, and the manufacturer’s setup and topology rules.
