Ethernet is often the better choice for a stationary device when you can run a cable and want a direct local network link. It avoids the device’s last-hop Wi-Fi radio connection, but it is not automatically faster or more reliable in every home: results depend on the ports and equipment involved, the internet plan, and local conditions. Wi-Fi remains the practical choice for devices that need to move around.
What changes when you switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet?
Ethernet connects a device to a router or switch with a physical cable and compatible Ethernet ports. Wi-Fi connects over radio, allowing devices to move within the network’s signal coverage. As Cisco puts it, “The biggest disadvantage is that your device is tethered to a router.” Cisco’s wired-versus-wireless guide also notes that newer Wi-Fi generations have narrowed historical speed and security differences.
The key trade-off is mobility versus a dedicated physical link to the local network. Ethernet’s capacity is bounded by the speed of the connected port and the other relevant components; Wi-Fi clients connected to an access point share its wireless bandwidth. Neither fact alone tells you what internet speed you will see: the service plan, router or switch, device interface, and network conditions also matter. Cisco’s Ethernet switch explanation describes these link and bandwidth roles.

It can be, but there is no universal speed winner. Ethernet avoids the wireless link between the device and access point, and a capable Ethernet port can provide a direct connection at that port’s speed. But a wired link cannot exceed the limits of the slowest relevant component, such as the device interface, router or switch port, or internet service. A cable by itself does not upgrade those limits.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Modern Wi-Fi can perform well, and the gap from Ethernet depends on the particular devices, access point, signal conditions, and network setup. Cisco says Wi-Fi advances, including Wi-Fi 6, have eroded older performance differences. The available sources do not establish a universal household speed or latency advantage, so a specific speed promise would be misleading.
Is Ethernet better for gaming or other stationary devices?
For a desktop, game console, or other device that stays in one place, Ethernet is worth considering if routing a cable is practical. It removes the device’s Wi-Fi radio link from the connection path, which may help avoid wireless interference or variation. That does not guarantee a particular latency, eliminate every cause of lag, or fix a slow broadband service. The reviewed sources do not quantify a universal latency or stability advantage.

If the device is a phone, tablet, or laptop that you carry around, Wi-Fi’s mobility may matter more than the benefit of a cable. Ethernet and Wi-Fi serve complementary roles: wire devices that stay put when it makes sense, and keep wireless access for devices that need it. The Ethernet Alliance’s overview of Ethernet and wireless technologies likewise frames them as complementary.
What you need for an Ethernet setup
- A cable: It must reach from the device to a router or switch port. Cable routing can be inconvenient, especially across rooms.
- Compatible ports: Check the device’s Ethernet interface and the network equipment’s available LAN port. The link’s capacity is limited by the connected port and other relevant components.
- An adapter, if needed: A laptop or other device without Ethernet may require a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Verify compatibility before buying; no particular model is established here.
- A switch, if needed: If the router does not have enough LAN ports, an Ethernet switch can provide additional wired connections. A switch adds ports; it does not raise the speed of your subscribed internet service.
Buy equipment to match the ports and speeds your devices and network can actually use. A more capable cable or accessory cannot make a slower port, router, or internet plan faster.

Does Ethernet make a connection more secure?
A wired connection avoids exposing that client’s local link over Wi-Fi radio, but that does not make the entire network automatically secure. Security still depends on network configuration and access controls. Wi-Fi security depends on configuration and current security practices; it should not be treated as inherently unsafe. Cisco cautions that improvements in Wi-Fi have narrowed older security differences.

How to choose between Ethernet and Wi-Fi
| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | The device is tethered to a cable. | Connects within signal coverage and supports moving around. |
| Local connection | Physical link with capacity up to the connected port’s speed, subject to other component limits. | Connected clients share the access point’s wireless bandwidth. |
