Ethernet is usually the more reliable choice for low, consistent latency between your gaming device and home router. It can help if Wi-Fi is causing ping spikes, packet loss, or instability, but it cannot guarantee lower ping to a game server: the rest of the network route and the server still affect that result. A well-placed, uncongested Wi-Fi connection may be perfectly adequate, especially for casual gaming.
What Ethernet can—and cannot—change
Your game’s ping measures how long data takes to travel between your device and the game server and back. The connection from your device to your router is only one part of that route. Ethernet replaces that local wireless link with a cable; it does not control the internet route beyond your home, the server’s location, or conditions at the game service.
That distinction explains why plugging in may make the connection steadier without producing a dramatic change in the ping number shown by a game. If the wireless segment is contributing delay or interruptions, Ethernet can remove that source of variability. If the remaining delay comes from the wider route or server, changing the local link may have little effect on the displayed ping.
There is no well-supported, universal number of milliseconds that every player saves by switching. Results depend on the home network and route, and the available comparisons do not establish a single figure that applies across setups. Treat claims of a guaranteed improvement as suspect.

It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.
It also helps to separate average ping from consistency. A connection can show a reasonable ping much of the time and still feel unreliable if that number jumps, packets are lost, or the game reports interruptions. Ethernet’s main advantage is that it avoids wireless signal conditions on the device-to-router segment, so it is often the more predictable option. If the weak point is somewhere else, the cable cannot fix it.
Can Wi-Fi ever show a lower ping than Ethernet? A player may see that in a particular comparison because the two connections are using different conditions or routes, or because other network conditions change between tests. That does not make Wi-Fi generally more predictable. The useful question is not which connection wins every time in theory, but whether your own Wi-Fi link is contributing to the symptoms you experience.
Ethernet and Wi-Fi compared for gaming
| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Local latency consistency | Usually lower and more consistent on the device-to-router link; it avoids wireless signal conditions. | Can work well, but signal quality, interference, and shared use can introduce variability. |
| Game-server ping | May improve if the local Wi-Fi connection was a source of delay; does not guarantee a lower server ping. | Depends on local wireless conditions as well as the route to the server. |
| Interference and obstacles | Not affected by Wi-Fi channel interference on the local link. | Distance, walls, nearby access points, Bluetooth, and other devices can affect the connection. |
| Convenience | Requires a cable run to a compatible router or switch port. | No cable run to the router, but performance depends on where the device and access point are placed. |
RTINGS describes Ethernet as consistently lower and more stable than Wi-Fi in its comparison. HP’s online gaming internet-speed guidance likewise says a wired connection delivers lower, more consistent latency by avoiding wireless interference and network congestion. Those are general comparisons, not a promise that every household will see a particular in-game ping reduction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ethernet is most compelling when the device is far from the router, separated by obstructions, or affected by competing wireless activity. It is also useful as a test: connecting a cable gives you a way to compare a wired local link with the Wi-Fi link you normally use. If the game becomes more stable, that is evidence that Wi-Fi may have been part of the problem.
Wi-Fi has a practical advantage: no cable has to cross the room or follow a route through the home. HP says Wi-Fi is usually adequate for casual gaming, particularly with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E routers. That does not mean every Wi-Fi setup will be suitable for every player or situation. Signal strength, obstructions, nearby wireless activity, and shared network use still affect the result.
When switching to Ethernet is worth trying
- Your ping jumps around while you play. A variable wireless link is one possible cause, so a wired comparison can help isolate it.
- You experience interruptions or packet loss. If these occur over Wi-Fi but not over a direct cable connection under similar conditions, the wireless segment may be contributing.
- The signal is weak or the device is far from the router. Distance and obstructions can make Wi-Fi less reliable.
- Several devices share the wireless network or channel. Shared use and nearby wireless activity can affect performance.
If none of these problems is present and the game feels responsive, Wi-Fi may already be doing the job. HP says Wi-Fi is usually adequate for casual gaming, particularly with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E routers. That is not a guarantee for every home: signal strength and local conditions still matter.
For a useful decision, start with the symptom rather than buying equipment. A steady ping and responsive play give you little reason to route a cable solely because Ethernet is often more consistent in general. Frequent spikes, lost connections, or packet-loss warnings make a wired test more worthwhile. The comparison can tell you whether a cable is likely to help your setup before you commit to a permanent cable route.
Consider the practical trade-off too. A wired connection needs a cable long enough to reach a compatible router or switch port, and the route should not create a trip hazard. If the device is in another room and routing a cable is inconvenient, improving Wi-Fi placement or testing an alternative such as powerline or MoCA may be more practical. Neither alternative is guaranteed to outperform Wi-Fi in every home.

How to test whether Wi-Fi is the problem
- Note the problem before changing anything. When the game shows a ping indicator, observe whether it stays steady or spikes, and note any connection interruptions or packet-loss warnings the game provides.
- Connect by Ethernet if feasible. Run a cable from the gaming device to a compatible router or switch port. Use the same device and game so the local connection is the main change.
- Compare under similar conditions. Play at comparable times and with similar household network use. A single session can be misleading if the game server or internet route changes.
- Interpret the result by symptom. A steadier connection or fewer interruptions on Ethernet suggests Wi-Fi was a contributing factor. Little or no change suggests the cause may lie elsewhere, though it does not identify the exact cause on its own.
- Check beyond the local link if the issue persists. Consider router behavior, the internet service provider’s route, and game-server conditions before assuming that a more expensive cable or newer gaming router will fix the problem.
A fast download-speed result does not establish that latency is low or stable. For gaming, pay attention to the game’s ping behavior and connection warnings rather than treating headline download speed as a substitute for a latency check.
Keep the comparison as controlled as your home setup allows. Use the same gaming device and game, and avoid changing several things at once. If you switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet while also changing the router, moving the console, or changing how the home network is used, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered. Comparing at similar times and under similar household use makes the result more informative, although the game server and wider route can still vary.
Look beyond a single ping value. Note whether spikes recur, whether the game reports packet loss or interruptions, and whether play feels more consistent. If the game provides no detailed indicator, record what you can observe rather than assuming that one number captures every connection problem. A lower displayed ping during one wired session is not proof that the cable will always produce that result; a more stable experience across comparable sessions is stronger practical evidence.

If Ethernet helps, Wi-Fi was likely a contributor, but the test does not prove that every remaining issue is solved. If Ethernet makes little difference, that does not mean the test failed: it suggests the wireless segment may not be the main bottleneck. The next step is to look at the router, ISP route, or game-server conditions rather than repeatedly changing cable types.
Choosing and connecting an Ethernet cable
Cat 5e and Cat 6 are common consumer Ethernet cable types, according to Intel. Choose a length that reaches without creating a trip hazard, and check that both the gaming device and the router or switch have Ethernet ports. For a gigabit link, the router port also needs to support gigabit speeds; the cable label alone cannot make a slower port operate at gigabit speed.
For a basic test, connect the cable directly between the device and router. If a switch is part of the home network, it can be used when its ports and connections are compatible. A higher cable category or premium branding is not, by itself, a way to lower ping to a remote game server.
The useful purchase is a cable that reaches and works with the ports in your setup. A short cable is sufficient if the gaming device sits near the router; a longer one may be needed to route around a room or along a wall. Choose the length for the actual path rather than leaving a taut cable across a walkway. Before ordering, check that the device has an Ethernet port and that the router or switch has an available compatible port.

If running a cable is impractical
Improve the Wi-Fi setup
Place the device where it can receive a stronger signal, and consider distance and walls between it and the access point. Nearby access points, Bluetooth activity, and the number of devices using the same network or channel can also matter. Intel recommends reducing the number of devices using the network while gaming to leave more network resources available.
Think about where the wireless signal has to travel, not just the router’s advertised capabilities. A router that works well for a device nearby may not deliver the same experience when the gaming device is farther away or separated by walls. If possible, compare play from a location with a stronger signal. Avoiding unnecessary distance or obstructions may help, but it does not guarantee a particular ping or solve issues outside the home network.
Nearby access points and Bluetooth activity are also worth considering when investigating instability. Other devices using the same network or channel can add shared-use concerns. Intel’s practical recommendation is to reduce the number of devices using the network while gaming so more network resources are available. This is a simple thing to test if the connection is worse when the household is busy, but it cannot control internet routing or game-server conditions.
Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E can be part of a capable setup, and HP notes that these routers can make Wi-Fi adequate for casual gaming. A newer Wi-Fi standard does not remove the need for a usable signal or favorable local conditions. Before replacing equipment, check whether the existing wireless link is weak, obstructed, or affected by shared use and compare against Ethernet if you can.
Consider powerline or MoCA adapters
HP lists powerline and MoCA adapters as alternatives that may provide a more stable connection than standard Wi-Fi when a direct Ethernet run is not practical. Their results depend on the home’s wiring and equipment, so they are options to test rather than guaranteed upgrades.
These adapters are worth considering when the gaming device is too far from the router for a convenient cable run. They are not the same as a guaranteed direct Ethernet path: whether they help depends on the home wiring and the equipment involved. If an adapter is already available or easy to test, compare it with Wi-Fi using the same game and similar conditions. If it does not make the connection steadier, there is no reason to assume that the category alone will fix the problem.
What to do if Ethernet does not improve the game
If ping spikes, lag, or interruptions continue over a direct wired connection, Wi-Fi is less likely to be the sole cause. The remaining issue may involve the router, the ISP’s route, or game-server conditions. A new gaming router is not a guaranteed remedy: RTINGS cautions that buying the newest model alone is unlikely to fix ping.
- If the problem occurs across multiple games or services, investigate the home router and internet connection.
- If it is limited to one game or server, the game’s route or server conditions may be involved.
- If the game’s ping is steady but play still feels poor, ping alone may not explain the problem; use any connection or packet-loss indicators the game provides.
These patterns are clues, not diagnoses. A problem affecting more than one game or service is a reason to look at shared parts of your connection, including the router and internet service. A problem limited to one game or server points attention toward that service or the route it uses, but does not establish the exact cause. If the displayed ping remains steady while play feels poor, check for other connection warnings rather than treating ping as a complete measure of the experience.

Do not assume that a faster advertised download speed will resolve unstable play. Download speed and latency describe different aspects of the connection, and a speed result alone cannot tell you whether ping is steady. Likewise, do not buy the newest gaming router simply because lag is present. RTINGS cautions that a new model by itself is unlikely to fix ping; first use the wired test to determine whether the local wireless link is a likely factor.
Keep the wired-versus-wireless comparison focused on what changed. A steadier result on Ethernet is useful evidence that the local wireless link mattered; an unchanged result is a reason to look farther along the connection path, not to keep buying cables or networking gear without a diagnosis.

Is Ethernet better than Wi-Fi for online gaming?
Ethernet is generally the more predictable choice for the local connection between your gaming device and router because it avoids wireless signal conditions and shared-channel interference on that segment. Wi-Fi can still be adequate when the signal and local conditions are good. Which is better for your setup depends on whether wireless instability is contributing to your symptoms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan Wi-Fi give me lower ping than Ethernet?
It can show a lower ping in a particular comparison, but that does not mean Wi-Fi is inherently more stable or will always be faster. The game-server route and conditions can change, and Ethernet does not control the entire path. Compare both on the same device and game under similar conditions, paying attention to consistency and interruptions as well as the displayed number.
How many milliseconds will Ethernet save?
There is no universal, well-supported figure that applies to every player. The result depends on the local wireless conditions and the wider route to the server. Ethernet may make little difference to the displayed ping when Wi-Fi was not the source of the delay, even if it provides a more consistent local link.
Is Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E enough for gaming?
It can be adequate, especially for casual gaming, but the standard alone does not guarantee a good connection. Signal strength, distance, obstructions, nearby wireless activity, and shared use still matter. If Wi-Fi is stable and the game feels responsive, a cable may not make a noticeable practical difference.
Does faster internet mean lower ping?
Not necessarily. A headline download speed does not establish that latency is low or stable. For this decision, observe the game’s ping behavior and any packet-loss or interruption warnings, and use a wired comparison if you suspect Wi-Fi instability.
What Ethernet cable should I use for gaming?
Cat 5e and Cat 6 are common consumer options. Choose a length that safely reaches your device and confirm that the device and router or switch have compatible Ethernet ports. For a gigabit link, the router port must also support gigabit. A more expensive cable category or brand is not a guaranteed way to lower ping to a remote server.

Will a gaming router fix lag?
Not by itself. If the wireless link is the problem, Ethernet or an improved Wi-Fi setup may be a more direct test. If the issue persists over Ethernet, the router, ISP route, or game-server conditions may be involved. Buying the newest gaming router alone is unlikely to guarantee lower ping.
What if I cannot run Ethernet to my gaming device?
Review signal strength, distance, walls, nearby access points, Bluetooth activity, and how many devices share the network or channel. Reducing network use while gaming may help. HP also lists powerline and MoCA adapters as alternatives that may be more stable than standard Wi-Fi, though their suitability depends on the home wiring and equipment.
