For a console or other HDMI source in one room and a TV in another, the product to look for is usually an HDMI extender kit: a matched transmitter and receiver connected by Cat5e or Cat6 cable. A plain Ethernet cable, router port, or generic adapter does not turn HDMI into a TV-ready signal. “Ethernet to HDMI” can also mean a decoder for a network video stream, which is a different kind of device.
Which kind of Ethernet-to-HDMI device do you need?
Start with the direction and type of signal. A console sends video and audio out through HDMI; a television receives them through HDMI. For that connection over a long cable run, an extender’s transmitter takes the console’s HDMI output and sends it over a Cat cable to a receiver beside the TV. The receiver then outputs HDMI to the display. The Monoprice 8123 manual shows this sender-to-receiver arrangement for its HDBaseT product.
- HDMI extender over Cat cable: The usual fit for a console or home-theater source connected to a distant TV. It requires compatible sending and receiving hardware.
- HDMI-over-IP system: Some systems distribute video through additional receiver units and a dedicated Ethernet switch. Whether a system supports that arrangement—and which switch topology it needs—is model-specific.
- Network-stream decoder: This converts a video stream already carried over a network into HDMI. It does not necessarily accept a console’s HDMI output.
The connector may be RJ45 in all these cases, but that does not make the underlying signal or port a standard home-network connection. Monoprice’s manual distinguishes its HDBaseT sender-to-receiver link from separate Ethernet ports for network devices. Its 2011 instructions are useful for understanding that product’s topology, not for establishing the features of current extenders.
What the documented product examples actually support
The available specifications describe different products and use cases, not a like-for-like, independently tested ranking. Use the figures below as product-specific claims, and check the exact model and installation requirements before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Example | Published capability | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cable Matters HDMI Extender over Ethernet with Local Loopout & TCP/IP Support, Product ID 103202 | Cable Matters’ undated product page, accessed 2026, states up to 1080p over Cat6 for a maximum of 492 feet (150 meters). | The same page describes expansion to as many as 255 displays using additional receiver boxes and a dedicated unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switch. That configuration is not a generic capability of Ethernet cables or extender kits. |
| WyreStorm RX-70-POH | Crutchfield’s undated listing, accessed 2026, reports 1080p up to 70 meters and 4K Ultra HD up to 35 meters; it lists HDCP 2.2 and HDR support. | The receiver requires a compatible transmitter. Crutchfield marks the listing no longer available there, so it is a specification example, not a current purchase recommendation. |
| Monoprice 8123 HDBaseT sender/receiver | The 2011 manual describes a Cat5e/Cat6 HDBaseT link and an extension distance of up to 100 meters for that documented product. | The manual identifies the Cat cable as the link between sender and receiver, with separate network ports. Do not infer current gaming features from this older documentation. |
These figures come from manufacturer or retailer materials; they are not independent distance, image-quality, latency, or reliability test results. A listed maximum does not establish what a different extender will deliver over the same cable run.
What to check before choosing an extender for gaming
A “4K” label alone does not establish that a product suits a modern console. Confirm that the exact transmitter-and-receiver combination supports your console’s output at the refresh rate and cable distance you intend to use. Check the specifications for:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Resolution and refresh rate at distance: Look for the supported combinations, not a resolution headline without a rate or cable-length condition.
- HDCP, HDR, and color format: Verify the required HDCP version and the HDR and color-format support stated for the specific model.
- Gaming features and delay: Look for explicit VRR and ALLM support if you need them, and vendor-documented latency figures. The cited specifications do not establish VRR, ALLM, or measured gaming latency.
- Audio: Check which audio formats pass through and whether the kit supports any audio extraction you need.
- Control and power: Determine whether IR, CEC, or USB control is required, and whether the receiver is powered locally or uses PoH/PoC.
- Cabling and network topology: Confirm cable category, shielding and installation requirements, and whether the link is point-to-point or requires a dedicated switch. Do not connect an extender port to a home network unless the maker explicitly documents that use.
- Compatibility and support: Check both ends of the kit, the source and display, the exact model revision, warranty, support, and current availability.
The cited Cable Matters page specifies up to 1080p; it does not establish support for 4K/120, VRR, or ALLM. Do not treat its long-distance figure as evidence of those gaming capabilities.

- Choose a matched transmitter-and-receiver kit whose published resolution, refresh rate, and other required features cover your source and display.
- Connect the console’s HDMI output to the transmitter’s HDMI input.
- Run the cable type and category specified by the kit between the transmitter and receiver. Use a network switch only if the manufacturer documents that topology for the model.
- Connect the receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV, then connect power and any control cables required by the kit.
- Select the TV’s corresponding HDMI input and set the console to a video mode supported by the entire chain.
On the Monoprice 8123, the manual says the sender’s HDBaseT link indicator lights when it has established a connection with the receiver over Cat5e/Cat6. That status describes the link; it does not by itself prove that every requested display mode is working.

When a network-to-HDMI decoder is the right product
If your source is already a supported network video stream, a decoder may be appropriate. SIYI’s Ethernet-to-HDMI Output Converter describes converting standard RTSP video streams to HDMI, with OSD, recording, and configuration functions. Its stated role is stream conversion, not extending an ordinary console’s HDMI output.
Blackmagic Design’s 2110 IP Mini IP to HDMI is professional monitoring hardware for SMPTE 2110 IP video and audio over 10G Ethernet, with support stated through 2160p60. It is not a typical home-console extender. These devices answer a different need from a point-to-point HDMI-over-Cat kit.

Are any of these the best choice for every home theater?
No universal winner follows from the published figures here. The examples span an HDMI extender with a documented multi-receiver option, an older HDBaseT manual, and a receiver listing that requires a compatible transmitter and is no longer available at that retailer. There are no independent latency or reliability measurements in the cited material, so it would be misleading to rank them as tested gaming performers.
For a practical shortlist, first match the architecture to your source: choose an HDMI extender kit for a console’s HDMI output, or a network decoder only when your source is a stream in a format that decoder supports. Then compare the exact video modes at your cable length, compatibility, control, audio, power, topology, and live support and availability information.
