An Ethernet cable can limit your internet speed, particularly if a damaged cable causes a connection that should run at Gigabit speed to negotiate at just 100 Mbps. But the cable is only one possible bottleneck: the computer’s network port, a router or switch port, a wall jack, network settings, or your internet plan can also cap performance. Check the Ethernet link speed separately from your internet speed test, then trace the connection one segment at a time.

Can an Ethernet cable slow down your internet?

Yes. A damaged or unsuitable cable can reduce the speed negotiated between your computer and the router or switch. A common clue is a 100 Mbps link when the equipment at both ends is supposed to support Gigabit Ethernet. A cable can still pass some traffic while operating at a lower link speed.

That link speed is not the same as your internet speed. The link is the negotiated connection between two local network ports; an internet speed test measures the service reaching your device through the entire path. The slowest component in that path sets the practical ceiling, so a fast cable cannot overcome a slower port, plan, or provider network.

Why does Ethernet connect at only 100 Mbps?

If your computer and router support Gigabit Ethernet but Windows reports 100 Mbps, check the physical path before assuming the computer is at fault.

  • Detachable design: The main control unit and remote unit can be separated and used independently, allowing you to test both ends of long cables. This makes it ideal for wall-mounted ports, long-distance cabling, or structured cabling systems, perfect for homes, offices, or professional IT environments
  • What you will get: 1 * TLP-123A Network Cable Tester, 1 * user manual, 2 * AAA batteries
  • A damaged cable or connector may prevent a Gigabit link.
  • An intermediate switch, wall jack, or cable segment may be limited or faulty.
  • One end may be plugged into a 100 Mbps port rather than a Gigabit port.
  • The connection may be misconfigured; Intel recommends auto-negotiation at both ends and an up-to-date network adapter driver.

For above-Gigabit service, check every port in the path: a single Gigabit port can cap a multi-gigabit connection even if the computer, cable, and internet plan support more.

How to check Ethernet link speed in Windows

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter ncpa.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Right-click the Ethernet connection and select Status.
  3. Read the value beside Speed. This is the local Ethernet link rate, not your internet speed-test result. If available, compare it with the speed supported by the computer and router ports.

Run an internet speed test separately and note both results. A 100 Mbps Ethernet link is a strong reason to inspect the local connection; a Gigabit link with a poor internet test points toward other possible limits, such as the router, service plan, or provider network.

How to troubleshoot a 100 Mbps Ethernet link

  1. Check the plugs and ports. Reseat both cable ends. Connect the computer to a LAN port intended for devices, not the router’s WAN or Internet port, which is used for the modem connection. Check the labels and specifications to confirm the computer, router, and any switch ports support the speed you expect.
  2. Test a known-good cable. If possible, connect the computer directly to a known-working Gigabit LAN port with a verified Cat 6 cable. This bypasses other cables and devices. If the link speed rises, reintroduce the bypassed parts one at a time to identify the faulty cable, jack, or device.
  3. Include the whole cable route. Check patch cables on both sides of a switch, cables behind wall plates, and any other connection between the computer and router. Intel recommends testing a different port and replacing the cable with one known to work.
  4. Check negotiation, drivers, and another device. Keep auto-negotiation enabled at both ends and install the current network adapter driver. If possible, test the same cable and router port with a second computer; Microsoft also suggests trying another computer when troubleshooting an Ethernet connection.
  5. If the local link is correct, investigate internet service. Compare the speed test with the service plan and check with your internet provider about recurring local issues. A speed test alone cannot establish that the Ethernet cable is responsible.

Which Ethernet cable category do you need?

NETGEAR’s published maximums below are category specifications, not guaranteed results for every installation. Actual performance can depend on cable quality, length, and compatible equipment. The figures are from NETGEAR’s cabling guidance, updated July 7, 2025.

Category NETGEAR-published maximum Practical fit
Cat 5 100 Mbps up to 100 m Not a good choice for a new Gigabit installation when Cat 5e or higher is available.
Cat 5e 1 Gbps up to 100 m Usually sufficient for a working connection up to 1 Gbps within the stated distance.
Cat 6 10 Gbps up to 55 m A practical replacement or new run, provided the ports also support the target speed.
Cat 6A 10 Gbps up to 100 m Consider for a longer run where 10 Gbps is required and the equipment supports it.

Replacing a cable is a useful diagnostic step if the link has fallen to 100 Mbps or the cable is visibly damaged. It will not raise speeds beyond the limits of the ports, plan, or provider connection.

What if Ethernet link speed is fine but internet is slow?

A healthy local link does not prove the internet connection is delivering the expected speed. Check that the router and computer ports match the service tier, compare the test with the subscribed plan, and contact the provider if the slowdown persists. If a computer lacks an Ethernet port, Microsoft notes that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can add one; it is not a fix for a faulty cable or a slow internet service.

These checks follow manufacturer support guidance rather than independent testing of a particular computer, cable, or router combination. The available guidance does not establish what share of home Ethernet slowdowns are caused by cables.
