A faulty Ethernet cable can make a working router seem broken. A cable may establish a link and still corrupt packets or repeatedly drop the connection, so a link light alone does not prove the cable is good. Before replacing networking hardware, check the cable and test with one known to work.

Can a bad Ethernet cable make your internet slow?

Yes. A damaged or marginal Ethernet cable can cause packet errors or an unstable link, which may interrupt or impair a wired connection. Cisco explains that a cable can connect at the physical layer yet corrupt packets because of subtle damage to its wiring or connectors. Cisco also cautions that “A link light does not guarantee that the cable is fully functional.” Cisco’s switch-port troubleshooting guidance describes these failure modes.

That makes a cable fault capable of imitating a router problem: devices may lose connectivity, or the wired connection may behave inconsistently even though the router appears powered and connected. These symptoms do not identify the cable by themselves; a port, connector, or another network component could also be responsible.

How to check whether the Ethernet cable is the problem

  1. Check the connections and visible condition. Make sure both ends are firmly seated. Inspect the plugs for dirt, broken or missing pins, and the cable for visible damage. These are among the checks in Cisco’s troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Swap in a known-good cable. Use a cable that you know works and that is suitable for the equipment’s ports. Recheck the same connection and symptoms. An unverified spare does not provide a conclusive test.
  3. See whether the fault follows the cable. If the problem appears with the original cable but clears with the known-good one, that points to the original cable. If the problem remains, try another suitable port where practical and continue checking the connectors and other network components.
  4. Isolate longer or more complex runs. For an installed cable run, a cable tester may help. If the path includes a patch panel or media converter, bypassing intermediate components where practical can help narrow down the fault. See Cisco’s LAN-switching troubleshooting guidance.

What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you

  • A link light is on: The connection has established a link, but the cable may still have errors. A light is not a clean bill of health.
  • The connection repeatedly drops and returns: Link flapping can be consistent with a cable problem, but it is not proof. Check the cable and test a known-good replacement.
  • Packet errors appear: Errors can support the possibility of a marginal cable, especially when the connection also behaves unreliably. They do not, by themselves, establish which component is at fault.
  • The issue persists with a known-good cable: The original cable becomes a less likely explanation. Check ports, connectors, and other parts of the network rather than assuming the router must be replaced.

Cisco’s LAN-switching guidance also discusses checking ports and isolating long runs. There is no established comparative statistic here for how often a cable, rather than a router, causes a home-network fault, so symptoms should be used to guide testing rather than to assign odds.

Does a 10-year-old Ethernet cable need replacing?

Not solely because of its age. The age of a cable is context, not a diagnosis: the available technical guidance supports checking for damage and marginal performance, not a universal expiration rule. The make, category, construction, installation route, and measured condition of the anecdotal ten-year-old cable are not established, so its age alone cannot explain the fault.

Replace the cable when inspection or a swap test points to it. For common gigabit copper links, Cisco identifies Cat5, Cat5e, and Cat6 as relevant categories; the appropriate cable still depends on what the connected equipment supports. Cisco’s cable-category guidance provides that context. A Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable is a suitable broad choice for many consumer gigabit connections, provided it matches the ports and is in good condition.

Why the router-replacement anecdote is a useful caution, not proof

The title’s story illustrates a plausible troubleshooting trap: replacing a router does not rule out a cable fault elsewhere in the connection. It does not establish that the old cable failed because it was ten years old, or that router replacements caused damage. The useful lesson is procedural—test the simple physical link with a known-good, compatible cable before treating router replacement as the answer.
