For most home wired connections up to 1 Gbps, Cat 5e is sufficient. Choose Cat 6 or better if your internet service and wired devices support multi-gigabit speeds; for a new long copper run carrying 10 Gb/s, Cat 6A is the more dependable choice for the full 100 m channel. The right answer depends on which cable you mean: Ethernet inside your home or the provider’s connection into it.

Which cable do you mean?

People often say “internet cable” to mean two different things. An Ethernet cable connects local devices—such as a computer, router, switch, or game console—over a wired network. The provider’s access connection brings broadband to your building and may use fibre, coaxial cable, or copper-line DSL. These are separate parts of the connection and do not use interchangeable advice. The European Commission describes DSL over copper lines and broadband over coaxial cable as access technologies; ITU-T G.9930 covers point-to-point fibre in premises.

This guide is about choosing the Ethernet cable between your devices. It cannot tell you to replace a provider’s fibre, coaxial, or DSL connection with an Ethernet patch cable.

Which Ethernet cable should you choose?

Match the cable category to the speed of the Ethernet ports and the length of the run. For a typical home link capped at 1 Gbps, Cat 5e is generally enough. NETGEAR’s support guidance, last updated July 7, 2025, says Cat 5e is suitable for service or wired devices up to 1 Gbps and recommends Cat 6 or better when the service or LAN devices support multi-gigabit speeds.

Cable Matters 10Gbps Snagless Cat 6 Ethernet Cable, 25ft, Black
  • High-Performance Connectivity: This Cat 6 ethernet cable is designed for superior performance, with a 24 AWG copper wire core. It provides universal connectivity as an ethernet cord for LAN network components such as PCs, servers, printers, routers, and more, ensuring reliable and fast network connections
  • Advanced Cat6 Technology: Experience Cat6 performance with higher bandwidth at a Cat5e price. This network cable is future-proof, ready for 10-Gigabit Ethernet and backwards compatible with any existing Cat 5 cable network. It meets or exceeds Category 6 performance according to the TIA/EIA 568-C.2 standard
  • Reliable Wired Network Solution: Known variously as a Cat6 network cable, ethernet cable Cat 6, or Cat 6 data/LAN cable, this RJ45 cable offers a more secure and reliable connection than wireless networks. It's ideal for internet connections that demand consistency and security
  • Durable and Secure Design: The connectors of this ethernet cable feature gold-plated contacts and strain-relief boots for enhanced durability. Bare copper conductors not only improve cable performance but also comply with communication cable specifications
  • High-Speed Data Transfer: With up to 550 MHz bandwidth, this ethernet cord is ideal for server applications, cloud computing, video surveillance, and streaming high-definition video. It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.
  • Up to 1 Gbps: Cat 5e is a reasonable choice for a working link.
  • Multi-gigabit equipment: Cat 6 is a practical option, provided the connected ports support the target speed.
  • 10 Gb/s over a long copper run: Consider Cat 6A for a channel of up to 100 m.

Buying a higher category does not make a slower internet plan or a 1 Gb/s router port faster. It provides capability only when the other equipment and the run support it.

How do Cat 5e, Cat 6, and Cat 6A compare?

Intel’s technical guide lists the following channel distances for these Ethernet rates. Treat them as standards-oriented capabilities, not guarantees for every installation; cable quality, connectors, installation, and channel conditions matter.

Cat 6: a multi-gig option, with a shorter 10G reach

Intel lists Cat 6 for 1GBASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T, and 5GBASE-T up to 100 m, and 10GBASE-T up to 55 m. That makes it a useful option for multi-gig links, but not the full-distance choice for 10 Gb/s over a 100 m copper channel.

Cat 6A: for a longer 10G copper channel

Intel lists Cat 6A for 10GBASE-T to 100 m. If you are installing a new, long copper run and need 10 Gb/s, Cat 6A is the more dependable category to plan around for that distance.

Will a new cable make your internet faster?

Only if the current cable is limiting the wired link. The achieved connection is constrained by the slowest relevant part: your broadband service, modem or router, switch, device network port, and cable channel. Replacing a cable cannot raise the speed of a slower plan or port.

Before buying, check the wired link speed reported by your device or router and confirm the capabilities of both connected ports. Inspect the cable and connectors for damage, and verify that the device is connected by Ethernet rather than using Wi-Fi. If the negotiated wired link is already at the port’s rated speed, a higher-category cable alone is unlikely to increase your internet speed.

How do you choose the right cable for your setup?

  1. Identify the segment. Decide whether you need an Ethernet cable between local devices or help with the provider’s incoming broadband connection.
  2. Find the target speed. Check your service plan and the Ethernet speed supported by each port along the path, including the router, switch, and computer or other device.
  3. Measure the run. For ordinary gigabit links, Intel lists Cat 5e, Cat 6, and Cat 6A to 100 m. For 10GBASE-T, Intel lists Cat 6 to 55 m and Cat 6A to 100 m.
  4. Choose a category that meets the actual need. Cat 5e is generally sufficient up to 1 Gbps; choose Cat 6 or better for multi-gig equipment; consider Cat 6A for a long 10G copper run.
  5. Check the cable’s intended use. A movable Ethernet patch cable connects devices; permanent in-wall or structured cabling is a different installation decision. For unusual electrical or installation conditions, verify that the cable construction is appropriate rather than assuming shielding makes a home connection faster.

For a short connection from a router to a computer, a suitable patch cable is usually the straightforward choice. For a new permanent run, plan for the required link rate and distance, and ensure compatible equipment at both ends. Paying for a higher category than the ports and use case require may add capability you will not use.
