Ethereum’s quantum-security timetable is pushing its major scaling projects toward different strategies. zkSync is trying to make Ethereum faster to prove while building private infrastructure for regulated institutions; Starknet is considering becoming an independent Layer 1 so it can set its own quantum-resistance schedule. Neither strategy is complete, and the commercial case for bank deployments remains unproven.
Two quantum deadlines are shaping the split
The Ethereum Foundation roadmap, as reported by CryptoSlate in 2026, targets quantum resistance across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers by December 2029. The roadmap describes that timetable as aggressive. It covers more than a single cryptographic upgrade: each layer that processes transactions, reaches agreement or makes data available must be able to withstand future quantum attacks.

Starknet has announced a possible alternative. It is considering an independent Layer 1 with a target of full quantum resistance in 2027, two years ahead of Ethereum’s cited target. “Exit” in this context means separating from Ethereum’s base-layer timetable, not abandoning the network or the broader blockchain market. The proposal still needs governance approval and substantial engineering work.

zkSync is taking the opposite route. Its strategy keeps Ethereum as the settlement anchor while trying to make zero-knowledge proving fast enough for high-volume use, including private institutional applications.

What zkSync’s prover milestone means for Ethereum
The reported Airbender Prime benchmark
Matter Labs says its Airbender Prime prover processed 99% of 7,200 consecutive Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds each on one NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU. Matter Labs’ report, covered by CryptoSlate in 2026, says every block completed in under 12 seconds when witness preparation was included.
The distinction matters. A proving result that excludes witness preparation can look faster than the end-to-end process a production operator must run. The under-12-second figure is therefore the more useful number for judging the complete pipeline described in the report. The benchmark is also a performance claim from Matter Labs; it is not evidence that every zkSync deployment will achieve the same result under different workloads, software versions or hardware.
Why near-real-time proving matters
Rollups depend on proofs to demonstrate that batches of transactions were processed correctly. Faster proving can reduce the delay between executing a batch and submitting its proof to Ethereum. That could improve withdrawal responsiveness, make private applications easier to operate and reduce the amount of proving hardware needed for a given workload.
The test does not establish quantum resistance by itself. It demonstrates proving throughput on the stated GPU. Quantum security depends on the cryptographic assumptions and implementation used by the protocol, not simply on how quickly a proof is generated.
The cited materials do not state the purchase price, operating cost or electricity consumption of the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell used in the test. Buying the same model would not reproduce the benchmark automatically: software configuration, memory requirements, workload mix and witness-generation performance all affect results.
How Prividium is aimed at banks
Private execution with Ethereum settlement
Matter Labs’ Prividium is designed for private institutional execution while retaining direct settlement to Ethereum. The platform is also intended to support atomic transfers between private chains, allowing a transaction to complete across participating networks as one coordinated operation rather than leaving each side exposed to settlement timing risk.
Its permissioning engine is open source. CryptoSlate reported that Deutsche Bundesbank is testing that engine, which gives the project a concrete central-bank evaluation rather than only a marketing description. Testing is not the same as production adoption, and no deployment timeline was established in the cited material.

The available figures come from zkSync materials and should be read as company-reported distribution claims:
| Claim | Source and qualification | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| More than $8 trillion in assets across five founding U.S. regional-bank partners | zkSync Cari case study, reported by CryptoSlate in 2026 | An initial bank group with substantial balance-sheet scale |
| More than 30 institutions with over $10 trillion in combined assets | zkSync-hosted summary, reported by CryptoSlate in 2026 | A broader claimed pipeline or ecosystem footprint |
These totals describe the assets associated with the institutions, not revenue earned by Prividium or funds already settled through it. The cited reports do not independently verify the figures, specify how many institutions are in production, or disclose transaction volumes.

The revenue question is still open
Prividium’s commercial model is incomplete. Fees for private interoperability have not been finalized, and no published fee schedule explains whether or how Prividium usage would create demand for the ZK token. As a result, there is no established link between the reported institutional relationships and recurring protocol revenue.
That gap is important for banks evaluating the platform. A permissioned network can attract institutions without proving that its operator or token captures durable value. Until pricing, settlement charges, operating responsibilities and token utility are disclosed, the bank figures demonstrate interest rather than a mature business model.

Control over the quantum timetable
Starknet’s proposed 2027 target would let it choose when and how to deploy quantum-resistant cryptography instead of waiting for Ethereum’s broader 2029 program. An independent chain could coordinate its execution, consensus and data-availability changes under one roadmap.
Independence would also give Starknet direct control over the bridge and data-availability surfaces that connect applications to the base layer. That is the strategic attraction: the project could set its own security schedule and infrastructure rules.
The cost of leaving Ethereum’s base layer
The proposal is not a completed migration. Governance must approve it, engineers must build and audit the required systems, and users would need reliable ways to move assets and data. By operating as an independent Layer 1, Starknet would also take responsibility for its own consensus security, availability guarantees and bridge design rather than inheriting those properties from Ethereum.
The cited announcement does not provide a final architecture, launch date or economic model. Until those details are approved and implemented, the 2027 date is a target, not a delivered security milestone.

| Decision point | zkSync | Starknet’s proposed direction |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum-security timing | Uses Ethereum’s environment; no separate zkSync deadline is stated in the cited materials | 2027 full-quantum-resistance target, subject to approval and engineering |
| Dependence on Ethereum | Ethereum remains the settlement foundation for the rollup strategy and Prividium’s direct-settlement design | Would reduce base-layer dependence by becoming an independent Layer 1 |

| Bridge and data-availability control | Current rollup architecture remains tied to Ethereum’s settlement and availability environment; Prividium adds private-chain interoperability | An independent Layer 1 would control its own bridge and data-availability surfaces |
| Governance requirement | No new governance decision is identified for the reported prover benchmark | Independence requires Starknet governance approval |

Milestones that will determine which strategy works
- Ethereum’s roadmap: progress toward the December 2029 quantum-resistance target across execution, consensus and data layers.
- Starknet governance: a formal decision on independence, followed by an engineering plan that turns the 2027 target into a deployable upgrade schedule.
- Production proving data: whether Airbender Prime sustains the reported latency across varied workloads, not only the stated consecutive-block benchmark.
- Prividium economics: published interoperability fees, operating costs, settlement charges and a clear explanation of any ZK-token role.
- Bank deployment evidence: production transaction volumes and recurring contracts, rather than asset totals or pilot participation alone.
The strategic split in plain terms
zkSync is betting that Ethereum remains the most valuable settlement network if proving becomes fast enough and private execution can satisfy regulated institutions. Starknet is betting that quantum security is important enough to justify controlling the entire base-layer schedule. The first approach concentrates on performance and distribution while accepting Ethereum’s timetable; the second prioritizes autonomy but adds the security, bridge and governance obligations of an independent Layer 1.
For now, zkSync has the clearer performance datapoint and the more developed institutional narrative, while Starknet has the earlier stated quantum target. Neither has yet supplied the decisive proof: zkSync has not shown recurring Prividium revenue, and Starknet has not received approval or completed the engineering needed for its proposed exit.
