Yes. A transaction can be simulated or shown in readable form and still produce a bad trade: the state may change before execution, the signed request may differ from the one reviewed, or the safety rule may be missing or too weak. The Ethereum Foundation’s proposed native transaction assertions could make selected outcome conditions enforceable onchain, but they are not a universal safeguard and EIP-7906 is still a proposal.
Why a valid signature can still lead to a bad result
A signature authorizes a request; it does not guarantee that the request matches a user’s intent or that execution will deliver the user’s desired outcome. Ethereum runs the signed request against the code and state present when the transaction executes. A proxy’s implementation can change after review, and transaction ordering can alter a market before inclusion. For example, a sandwich attack can move a pool price without changing the signed transaction.
Intent mismatch: the signed request is not what the user thinks
The Ethereum Foundation points to the Bybit incident, in which signers authorized replacing a Safe implementation contract, and BadgerDAO, where a compromised frontend supplied a different signing request that led users to grant an attacker token-spending permission. In both cases, the concern was the request itself rather than simply a market outcome.
Outcome mismatch: the request permits an unacceptable result
A user can approve the request shown and still get an outcome outside their economic goal or policy. The Foundation’s October 5, 2026 account of an Aave and CoW collateral swap describes an attempt to swap about $50.4 million in aEthUSDT for aEthAAVE when AAVE liquidity was too thin. CoW’s gas ceiling rejected more complex quotes during verification, leaving a verified quote of roughly 329 aEthAAVE. The interface displayed a 99.9 percent price-impact warning and required confirmation that the entire value could be lost. The signer proceeded and received tokens worth about $36,000. These are figures from the Foundation’s account of one incident, not general market statistics. Ethereum Foundation Access Cluster

What readable signing and simulation can—and cannot—do
Clear Signing helps users inspect intent
Clear Signing aims to translate a transaction into human-readable information. Its usefulness depends on accurate decoding and on the user noticing a mismatch; a readable display does not enforce a trade result. In a May 12, 2026 announcement, the Ethereum Foundation described ERC-7730 as a shared format for transaction descriptions, supported by a registry, independent review and attestations, with wallets choosing which sources to trust. The descriptions accompany transactions rather than being embedded in them. The Foundation said “What You See Is What You Sign” should be the goal and Clear Signing should be the default on Ethereum. Simulation predicts against a particular state
A simulation estimates effects using a selected chain state. The state can change before inclusion, and the transaction eventually signed can differ from the one simulated. The Foundation cites Radiant Capital as a case where a wallet and simulation displayed the intended transaction while malware on signers’ devices replaced the payload at signing time. A simulation is useful evidence for review, not a binding promise about execution.
How existing contract and wallet checks help
Some protections already enforce specific conditions during execution. Uniswap’s amountOutMinimum, for example, can require a trade to produce at least a specified output. Safe’s checkAfterExecution hook lets a guard inspect account state and revert if configured rules are violated.

These checks work within the scope they are designed to inspect. They may rely on functions a contract exposes: a proxy might not expose its implementation address through a function, and a guard cannot directly inspect that storage slot without an interface. A guard that checks one balance also cannot see every other net state change. The key distinction is whether a check is merely displayed, estimated before execution, or enforced by code when execution occurs—and which specific property that code covers.
What EIP-7906 proposes
The Ethereum Foundation describes EIP-7906 as one possible approach, built on frame transactions proposed by EIP-8141. A frame transaction has ordered validation and action steps; EIP-7906 would add a read-only POST_TX frame at the end to inspect the outcome. The October 5, 2026 Foundation article said EIP-8141 was scheduled for Hegotá and EIP-7906 had advanced to “Considered for Inclusion,” but was not confirmed for that upgrade. Those were status descriptions as of that publication date, not a guarantee of future inclusion. Ethereum Foundation Access Cluster
What the proposed checks can inspect
The described design makes net differences in native ETH balances and storage, newly deployed contracts and code hashes, and emitted events available for inspection. Multiple writes to one storage slot are represented as a single starting-to-final entry; a slot restored to its original value is omitted.

TXTRACEwould enumerate net state changes and events.TXDIFFwould retrieve starting and final values for specified addresses and storage slots.EVENTDATACOPYwould copy event data into memory.
The proposed opcodes would run only in the read-only POST_TX frame. If an assertion failed, the execution body would revert, but the transaction would remain in the block as failed and its gas payer would still be charged for gas consumed.

The rule could travel with and be signed alongside the transaction’s actions. Depending on how it is written, it could require a minimum amount received, cap spending, restrict approvals, or prevent account-control logic from changing. The assertion would compare its rule with the observed outcome and revert the action if the rule failed. That makes a selected condition enforceable at execution—unlike a readable confirmation or simulation alone.
Why an assertion could still let a bad trade through
The transaction may have no assertion
EIP-7906 does not require every transaction to include one. A wallet constructing a frame transaction would need to include the needed assertion. A protocol that wants to protect every caller would have to require the exact assertion and reject transactions that omit it or supply an incorrect one. Existing immutable contracts cannot be retrofitted with such a requirement after deployment.

The rule may come from the wrong source
A compromised frontend could supply a rule permissive enough to allow an attack. The rule therefore needs to come from independently approved user intent, a standing account policy, or protocol logic the compromised component cannot change. As the Ethereum Foundation puts it, “The rule’s source matters as much as the check itself.” Ethereum Foundation Access Cluster
The check covers only what it names
A minimum-output rule protects a different property from a spending cap, an approval restriction, or a rule preventing account-control changes. An assertion is only as protective as the state and condition it actually checks; it is not a blanket judgment that a transaction is safe.
One transaction is not a whole cross-chain route
The Foundation says a protocol-defined solver guarantee would apply within one transaction on one network. It would not, by itself, guarantee the result of a workflow spanning multiple chains.

Cost and design choices remain unresolved
The EIP-7906 proposal search result warns that checking state differences could require significant gas in the worst case. It also identifies upgradeable assertion contracts as a possible bypass risk if a malicious transaction can upgrade the checker during execution. The Foundation’s account presents the information exposed, the access method, and the permitted execution locations as open design choices. These are proposal-level concerns, not measured outcomes from a deployed system. EIP-7906

When evaluating a wallet, protocol, or proposed assertion, ask where enforcement happens, what it covers, and who controls the rule. A hardware wallet or separate signing device can provide another place to check transaction details, but it does not independently guarantee a safe trade; do not assume a device supports a particular clear-signing feature without checking its documentation.
Quick Recap
| Protection layer | What it does | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Readable display | Explains decoded transaction intent for user review. | Does not enforce a result; accuracy and user attention matter. |
| Simulation | Estimates effects against a selected chain state before execution. | Does not freeze that state or ensure the signed payload matches the simulation. |
| Contract or wallet guard | Can enforce configured checks during execution, such as minimum output or selected account-state rules. | Cannot protect properties it does not inspect or cannot access. |
| Proposed post-action assertion | Could compare selected net state changes and events with a rule, then revert the execution body if the rule fails. | Does not help if absent, untrusted, too permissive, or outside the workflow’s scope. |
