No quantum computer can break Ethereum’s cryptography today, and Ethereum.org’s current advice is that you do not need to move your wallet or take quantum-specific action. The practical distinction is that an Ethereum address is visible when it receives ether, while a transaction from an externally owned account exposes its public key through its signature. That exposure matters to a possible future quantum attacker, but it does not mean your private key has been revealed or that your funds are presently at risk from quantum computing.
What are an Ethereum address, public key, and private key?
These terms describe related but different parts of an account. Keeping them distinct makes it easier to understand what other people can see and what a transaction authorizes.
- Private key: Secret cryptographic material used by an externally owned account (EOA) to sign transactions. Anyone who obtains the private key can create valid authorizations for that account. A wallet protects and uses this secret; it does not need to reveal it when it signs.
- Public key: The corresponding public cryptographic value. It is used to verify a signature and is involved in deriving the account address. It is not the private key and cannot be used as though it were the signing secret with today’s cryptography.
- Address: The shorter identifier used to send assets or interact with an account. It is derived from the public key, but it is not the full public key and does not disclose the private key.
- Signature: Cryptographic evidence that a transaction was authorized by the account’s key. It accompanies the transaction; it does not publish the private key.
Ethereum EOAs use ECDSA over the secp256k1 elliptic curve to sign transactions. In everyday use, a wallet prepares a transaction, signs it with the private key, and submits the signed transaction to the network. The signature lets the network check authorization without being handed the private key. Ethereum.org describes this account-signing model and the visibility of public keys in its post-quantum cryptography overview.
Does sending or receiving ETH reveal your public key?
Receiving ether makes an account’s address visible onchain, because the address is the destination recorded for the transfer. For an account that has only received ether and has never sent a transaction, the public key itself has not yet been exposed onchain in the way it is by a transaction signature. Once an EOA sends a transaction, its public key is exposed through that signature, according to Ethereum.org.

This is a useful distinction for quantum risk, not a reason to treat ordinary transfers as a current emergency. Public information can matter under a future cryptographic threat model even when it is safe under the capabilities available today. An address being public is normal and necessary for receiving assets; it is not evidence that someone has taken control of the account.
Can a quantum computer steal ETH today?
No. ethereum.org’s FAQ states: “No quantum computer today can break Ethereum’s cryptography.” It also says: “For now, there is nothing you need to do.” Those are the site’s current user-facing conclusions in its Post-quantum cryptography on Ethereum FAQ.
The concern is about a sufficiently capable future quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm against the elliptic-curve cryptography behind ECDSA. In principle, that could undermine the assumption that a public key cannot feasibly be used to recover its private key. The account’s public key is therefore more directly relevant to that scenario than an address that has only received funds. This is a future risk, not a capability that exists today.

Ethereum.org reports a March 2026 Google Quantum AI estimate of roughly 1,200 logical qubits to break 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography. Treat that as an estimate of a cryptanalytic requirement, not as a guaranteed threshold for every implementation and not as a prediction of when a machine with that capability will exist. The same Ethereum.org guidance says the hardware gap remains significant and that there is no exact timeline. Cryptographic transitions take years, which is why preparedness work matters before a threat is imminent.
What does “harvest now, decrypt later” mean for Ethereum?
“Harvest now, decrypt later” describes an adversary collecting material that is public today in the hope of exploiting it after a future capability becomes available. In Ethereum’s context, the official explanation applies this concern to accounts whose public keys are already exposed onchain. The phrase does not mean an attacker can currently derive private keys from those public keys, nor does it establish that a quantum break is near.
That distinction helps separate risk awareness from panic. A public key is not a secret that can be hidden again once it has appeared onchain, but a future protocol or wallet migration can change what signing method an account uses. Ethereum.org says users should expect the community and wallet software to provide guidance and tools if a migration becomes necessary. The reviewed guidance does not establish a consumer migration date or a presently available, generally applicable migration option.

Is Ethereum’s quantum risk limited to wallet signatures?
No. Wallet keys are the most immediate concern for an individual ETH holder, but Ethereum’s cryptographic infrastructure includes several different systems with different jobs. Ethereum.org identifies four areas that require post-quantum work:

These are not four versions of the same wallet problem. A change to EOA signing would not, by itself, replace validator signatures, commitments, or application proof systems. A complete post-quantum transition therefore involves protocol design and coordination as well as wallet interfaces. Ethereum.org describes signature agility through account abstraction as one path by which individual accounts could adopt another signature verifier, while treating roadmap names, sequence, and targets as planning milestones rather than guaranteed commitments.
What do NIST’s post-quantum standards do—and not do?
NIST finalized three post-quantum standards in August 2024 that are relevant to the broader cryptography landscape. Their purposes differ: key encapsulation is used to establish shared secrets, while digital-signature algorithms are used to authenticate messages or actions. These standards are not interchangeable, and the key-encapsulation standard is not a wallet signature algorithm.

NIST’s overview of post-quantum cryptography explains the distinction between cryptographic uses such as key establishment and digital signatures. Standardization is an important building block: it gives implementers defined algorithms to evaluate and adopt. It does not automatically change Ethereum’s protocol, make existing accounts compatible with a new scheme, or provide a safe path to move assets from one account design to another.

No quantum-driven move is required under Ethereum.org’s current advice. Do not create a new wallet, move funds, buy a different device, or share a recovery phrase because of a claim that a quantum computer can steal ETH now. Those actions are not supported as necessary by the official guidance and can introduce ordinary security risks, especially if a person is pressured into using an unverified migration service or disclosing account secrets.
Continue to make wallet decisions based on ordinary account security, not a claimed quantum deadline. A future transition, if needed, would depend on wallet and protocol support, and the official expectation is that developers and the community will provide guidance and tools. No wallet-specific, independently verified consumer migration deadline is established in the cited guidance.

How should you judge a future migration announcement?
When real migration options are announced, evaluate what they actually support rather than relying on the label “quantum-safe.” A credible option should explain how the new signing scheme works with Ethereum, how an account maintains continuity, and what a user must authorize. It should also make clear whether the capability is live on Ethereum or only proposed, tested, or planned.
- Signing scheme: Identify the specific signature verifier or algorithm supported, rather than relying on broad security language.
- Recovery and continuity: Find out how the account remains recoverable and whether the transition preserves control of the same assets and activity history.
- Independent security evidence: Look for clear, reviewable security information. A claim of post-quantum protection alone does not establish that implementation or migration mechanics are safe.
- Compatibility and costs: Check which applications and transaction paths work, and what fees or limitations apply. These details may differ from ordinary account transactions.
- Deployment status: Confirm that the feature is actually deployed and usable on Ethereum, rather than a roadmap item, test, proposal, or wallet-only interface.
Because migration can involve control of valuable assets, an announcement should never require you to reveal a private key or recovery phrase to a support person or a web form. This is a general account-safety precaution, not a claim that a particular future migration flow has already been designed.
What should you remember?
An Ethereum address is public by design; an EOA transaction signature exposes the account’s public key, not its private key. A sufficiently capable future quantum computer could threaten elliptic-curve signatures, but no such computer can break Ethereum’s cryptography today. Ethereum’s preparation also has to address validator, scaling, data-availability, and application cryptography. For wallet holders, the current practical answer is to take no quantum-specific action and wait for credible guidance and tools if the network and wallet developers determine migration is needed.
