Ethereum burns its entire transaction base fee; Solana burns half its base fee. That difference affects how fees offset new token issuance, but it does not by itself establish whether ETH or SOL supply is shrinking overall. To assess that, compare burns with issuance over the same period—and keep each network’s different fee system in view.
What fees do to ETH and SOL supply
A fee burn removes tokens from supply. It therefore reduces supply relative to what it would have been without the burn. But a network can burn tokens and still have its total supply grow if it issues more tokens than it burns during the period being measured.
Ethereum and Solana both combine fee burns with other supply flows. Ethereum issues ETH as consensus rewards. Solana’s inflation schedule funds validation. A sound comparison must account for both burns and issuance over a defined time window; the burn percentage alone cannot show which token’s supply contracted, or whether either one did.

A useful way to frame the arithmetic is: net supply change over a period depends on new issuance minus tokens burned during that same period. If issuance exceeds burns, supply grows despite the burn mechanism. If burns exceed issuance, supply falls over that interval. This describes the comparison to make; it is not a claim about either network’s current net result. The researched official sources explain the mechanisms and schedule parameters, but do not provide a paired, current-period dataset of aggregate burns and issuance for both networks.

It also helps to distinguish a protocol rule from an observed result. A rule such as “burn the full base fee” tells you what happens to that component of each included transaction. It does not tell you how much activity occurred over a month or year, how much was issued in the same interval, or what the resulting net supply movement was.
How Ethereum transaction fees work
Ethereum measures computational work in gas. A transaction’s fee is based on the gas it uses and the per-unit fee: the base fee plus any priority fee. The protocol sets a base fee for each block and adjusts it according to how the previous block’s gas use compared with its target. Ethereum burns the base fee, while the priority fee is a tip paid to the validator that includes the transaction. See Ethereum’s gas and fees overview and EIP-1559.
In simplified terms, the fee calculation is gas used multiplied by the applicable per-unit charge. Gas used reflects the computation required by the transaction; the fee rate reflects the conditions when it is included. This is why a fee cannot be inferred from the amount of ETH being transferred alone. Two transactions moving the same amount can require different amounts of computation, while the fee rate can also vary with block demand.
Base fee: burned
The base fee is the part of the transaction fee removed from supply. It changes with network conditions, so the amount of ETH burned depends on gas used and the base-fee rate when the transaction is included. Ethereum.org summarizes the rule directly: “The base fee is burned.”
Because the base fee is set for each block and adjusts in response to gas use relative to a target, the burn is linked to both transaction activity and the prevailing base-fee level. It is not a fixed amount of ETH per transaction. Higher aggregate use can therefore affect the amount burned, but the burn rule still does not reveal the net supply outcome without the issuance side of the calculation.
Priority fee: paid to the validator
A priority fee is an additional tip. It goes to the validator rather than being burned, so it does not reduce supply through the fee-burn mechanism. The base fee and the tip have different destinations even though both are part of what the user pays for a transaction.
This distinction matters when interpreting fee totals. A high total transaction fee is not automatically an equally large ETH burn: only the base-fee component is burned under this structure, while the priority fee is validator revenue. For a supply analysis, counting all fees paid as tokens removed would therefore misstate Ethereum’s burn.

A gas example is not a fixed price
Ethereum.org gives 21,000 gas units as the requirement for a standard ETH transfer. That is a gas-use example, not a fee quote or an amount of ETH. The ETH paid depends on the applicable fee rate at the time, and a transaction that performs more work can use more gas. Ethereum’s documentation explains transaction fee fields in its transactions guide.

Use the figure carefully: it helps illustrate the gas needed for a simple, standard transfer, but it is not a universal allowance for every Ethereum transaction. Nor does it mean that every transfer costs the same number of ETH. Gas units describe work; the fee rate turns that work into a token-denominated payment. A cost estimate needs both pieces and should reflect the transaction’s actual requirements and conditions at inclusion.
How Solana transaction fees work
Solana’s documented fee structure has a base fee and an optional priority fee. Its fee documentation lists a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, including applicable precompile signatures. Half of that base fee is burned and half goes to the block-producing validator. All priority fees go to validators. The documentation states, “Total fee = base fee + priority fee.” See Solana’s Fee Structure.
That means Solana’s fee split is not the same as Ethereum’s: the Solana base fee is divided between burning and validator payment, and its optional priority fee is paid to validators. Only the burned half of the base fee directly reduces token supply through this fee mechanism. A priority fee may increase what a user pays without increasing the amount burned under the documented allocation.
Base fee: split between burn and validator
Under the documented rule, only half of Solana’s base fee reduces supply. The other half is validator revenue. The listed 5,000-lamport figure is a parameter shown in the documentation accessed in 2026; because runtime parameters can change, check the current fee documentation before relying on it as a live value.
The base fee is quoted per signature, rather than in Ethereum gas units. Solana’s documentation says the base fee also accounts for applicable precompile signatures. This is the relevant unit when understanding the documented base-fee rule; it is not directly comparable to a gas-unit count or a gas price.
Priority fee: based on requested compute
A transaction can add a priority fee based on its compute-unit price and requested compute-unit limit. The default compute-unit price is zero. Solana calculates this fee using the requested limit, not the compute actually consumed, so requesting more compute than needed can increase the fee. Solana’s payment documentation also describes local fee markets and payment cost components.
The requested limit matters because it is part of the priority-fee calculation. A transaction that sets a needlessly high limit may therefore be more expensive even if it does not use all that compute. For a user estimating a Solana transaction cost, the compute-unit price and requested limit are relevant alongside the signature-based base fee. The default price of zero means there is no priority-fee charge from that setting by default, although users may choose a priority fee.
Do not mistake the optional priority-fee design for a burn. Under the documented allocation, all priority fees go to validators. Raising a priority fee can affect transaction cost and validator revenue, but it does not add to the fee burn described here.

Failed transactions still incur fees
Solana deducts fees before execution, so a transaction can be charged even if it fails. This is important when estimating costs: a failed attempt does not necessarily mean no fee was paid. The fee treatment is separate from whether the requested operation succeeded.
For users, that means a failed transaction is not necessarily cost-free. For supply analysis, the same fee-allocation rules still matter: consider which part of the charged fee is burned and which part goes to validators, rather than assuming failure means the entire fee is either refunded or burned. The documented structure gives the base-fee split and priority-fee destination; failure does not erase the fee charge.
Fee mechanisms compared
| Comparison | Ethereum | Solana |
|---|---|---|
| Fee basis | Gas used and gas price, consisting of a base fee and any priority fee. | Base fee per signature, plus an optional priority fee based on compute-unit price and requested compute-unit limit. |
| Base-fee burn | The entire base fee is burned. | Half the base fee is burned. |
| Validator fee revenue | Priority fees go to the validator that includes the transaction. | Half the base fee and all priority fees go to validators. |
| Other supply flow | ETH is issued as consensus rewards. | An inflation schedule funds validation. |
| Failed transaction cost | No comparison claim is made here; the cited sources establish the fee structure and ETH supply mechanics. | Fees are deducted before execution and remain charged when a transaction fails. |
The units are not directly comparable. Ethereum quotes gas and gwei pricing; Solana’s base fee uses lamports per signature, with optional compute-unit pricing. A nominal fee comparison needs unit conversion and a matched transaction workload. Even then, a fee comparison is not a supply comparison unless it also accounts for issuance and measures activity over the same period.
“Matched workload” matters because the fee systems describe different inputs. Ethereum fees track gas consumed and a fee rate. Solana’s base fee tracks signatures, while the optional priority fee depends on a requested compute limit and compute-unit price. Comparing a gas figure directly with a signature count, or comparing values in ETH and SOL without conversion, does not establish which transaction costs less or produces a larger burn.
There are several separate questions that can otherwise get conflated: what a user pays for a particular transaction; what share of that payment goes to validators; what share is burned; and what happened to total token supply after issuance and burns across a period. A useful network comparison identifies which of these it is answering. Fee allocation alone answers only part of the supply question.
Why a fee burn does not prove a token is deflationary
“Deflationary” is often used loosely to mean that a token has a burn mechanism. For total supply, the meaningful question is whether more tokens were removed than issued in a specified period. Ethereum’s documentation notes that when demand is high, blocks can burn more ETH than they mint, effectively offsetting issuance. That is a conditional outcome, not a fixed supply guarantee. See the technical introduction to ether.
Ethereum’s mechanism therefore allows fee burns to offset issuance, and in some conditions to exceed it, but that possibility should not be turned into a timeless statement about ETH supply. Whether supply rose or fell depends on the measured interval and the actual amounts burned and issued during that interval. The fact that Ethereum burns the full base fee is an allocation rule, not proof that supply always contracts.

The distinction between inflation rate and staking yield is important. The published rate parameters describe Solana’s inflation schedule; they should not be presented as a current realized rate of net supply growth, nor as the yield an individual staker necessarily receives. Net supply growth also has to be considered alongside burns, and staking yield is a different measure.
To state that ETH or SOL supply rose or fell, use dated aggregate figures for issuance and burns over the same interval. The protocol rules establish how fees are handled; they do not, by themselves, establish a current net supply change or which network had the larger change. The official sources consulted for this comparison do not supply a matched current-period aggregate burn-versus-issuance figure for both networks, so no such ranking can be inferred here.
How to compare the supply impact fairly
- Choose the period. State the start and end dates. A fee rule is structural; actual supply movement varies over time with activity and issuance. A comparison of different date ranges can produce a misleading contrast because the amount of activity and the issuance during those ranges may differ.
- Measure both sides of the supply flow. For each token, compare total fee burns with new issuance during that same period. Do not use the burn share as a substitute for the net result. A burn percentage explains the destination of a fee component; it does not measure total tokens burned across all transactions.
- Keep fee units and workloads distinct. Ethereum charges by gas used and fee rate; Solana’s base fee is per signature, and its optional priority fee uses requested compute. Compare like-for-like transactions only after accounting for those differences. Convert the units where needed and make clear what transaction workload is being compared.
- Separate user cost from supply effect. A higher fee does not automatically mean a larger burn. On Ethereum the base-fee portion is burned and the tip is not; on Solana half the base fee is burned and priority fees go to validators. A fee increase could change user cost and validator revenue differently from the burn amount.
- Qualify the conclusion. Say whether total supply increased or decreased over the specified interval, and identify the period and data basis. Avoid calling a token deflationary solely because its protocol burns some fees. If the available evidence establishes only the mechanism, say that rather than making a claim about net supply movement.
Those steps also prevent a common category error: inferring long-run token supply direction from the price of one transaction. An individual fee reveals neither the aggregate number of transactions nor all issuance over the period. A supply claim needs network-level totals for the same dates, while a user-cost claim needs the specific transaction design and fee conditions.

What this means for users and observers
If you are estimating a transaction cost
On Ethereum, estimate gas used and the prevailing base and priority fee rates; the 21,000-gas transfer figure applies to a standard ETH transfer, not every transaction. On Solana, account for signatures and any priority fee, and avoid an unnecessarily high requested compute limit. Because Solana charges fees before execution, include the possibility of a fee on a failed transaction.
Keep the purpose of the estimate clear. The user’s cost is the fee charged under the relevant network’s fee structure. The supply effect is only the burned portion of that fee: the entire Ethereum base fee, or half of the Solana base fee under the documented rule. Priority-fee payments are validator revenue in both systems, though the base-fee distribution differs.
If you are evaluating token supply
Look beyond the fee paid by an individual user. The supply effect depends on aggregate activity and the share of fees burned, while issuance continues according to each network’s separate mechanism. A per-transaction rule describes where a fee goes; it is not a net-supply report.
For Ethereum, distinguish the burned base fee from consensus issuance and validator tips. For Solana, distinguish the burned half of the base fee from the half paid to validators, the priority fees paid to validators, and the inflation schedule. These are separate flows; combining them carelessly can lead to a wrong claim about total supply.

There is no single “lower fee means smaller burn” shortcut in the supplied mechanics. A user fee may include components that are not burned, and the networks measure fee inputs differently. To make a meaningful comparison, state whether you mean transaction cost, validator fee revenue, per-transaction burn, or net supply change; each requires a different reading of the rules and, for aggregate supply, period-specific data.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the burn share as net supply direction. A burn reduces supply relative to the counterfactual, but issuance can still make total supply grow.
- Counting all fees as burns. Ethereum priority tips go to validators; Solana burns only half the base fee and pays all priority fees to validators.
- Calling schedule parameters current net growth. Solana’s listed inflation parameters are schedule figures, not observed net supply growth or staking yield.
- Comparing incompatible fee units. Gas and gwei are not the same measure as lamports per signature or compute-unit pricing. Convert units and match the workload before comparing costs.
- Assuming a failed Solana transaction is free. Fees are deducted before execution and remain charged if a transaction fails.
- Turning a conditional outcome into a guarantee. Ethereum can burn more ETH than it mints when demand is high, but that does not guarantee contraction in every period or establish a fixed supply cap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Ethereum and Solana transaction fees make ETH and SOL deflationary?
Not by themselves. Ethereum burns the full base fee, while Solana burns half its base fee. Both networks also have issuance: Ethereum issues ETH as consensus rewards, and Solana has an inflation schedule. To say whether total supply fell, compare aggregate burns with issuance over the same defined period.
Which network burns more of each transaction fee?
By the documented allocation, Ethereum burns its entire base fee and pays priority tips to validators. Solana burns half its base fee, pays the other half to the block-producing validator, and pays all priority fees to validators. This compares fee allocation, not aggregate burns or net supply change.
What does 21,000 gas mean for an Ethereum transfer?
Ethereum.org gives 21,000 gas units as the requirement for a standard ETH transfer. Gas units measure work, not a fixed ETH price. The amount paid depends on the applicable fee rate, and other transactions can require different amounts of gas.
Can a failed Solana transaction still cost SOL?
Yes. Solana deducts fees before execution, so a transaction can incur a fee even if it fails. The documented base-fee and priority-fee allocation rules still determine where the charged fee goes.
Does Solana’s 8% inflation figure describe its current net supply growth or staking yield?
No. Solana’s staking information lists 8% as an initial inflation rate, alongside a −15% annualized disinflation rate and a 1.5% long-term rate. These are schedule parameters, not a current observed net supply-growth figure or a staking yield.
Can I compare an Ethereum fee directly with a Solana fee?
Not without context. Ethereum fees use gas consumed and gas pricing, while Solana uses a signature-based base fee and optional compute-unit pricing. Convert the units and compare a matched transaction workload; a user-fee comparison still does not establish net supply change.
