Open interest (OI) is the number of Ethereum derivatives contracts that remain open at a point in time; trading volume is the number of contracts traded during a selected interval. OI shows outstanding exposure, while volume shows turnover. A futures or perpetual contract always has both a long and a short side, so neither metric alone tells you whether traders are net bullish or where ETH’s price will go.
To interpret either number responsibly, match the instrument, exchanges, units, timestamp and measurement window. The same “ETH OI” label can refer to futures, perpetual futures or options, and an exchange total can differ from an aggregator’s total because coverage and normalization differ.
The essential difference in one table
| Metric | What it measures | Time basis | What a rise can mean | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open interest | Contracts that are still outstanding | Point-in-time snapshot | More exposure remains open, or fewer positions have been closed | That new positions are bullish, that leverage is safe, or that ETH will rise |
| Trading volume | Contracts traded, including opening, closing and transfer trades | Accumulated over a chosen interval | More trading activity or turnover | That positions accumulated or that traders share one directional view |
CME Group describes the distinction this way: volume counts all contracts traded, while open interest counts contracts that remain open. The two numbers answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.

What Ethereum open interest actually counts
Ethereum OI normally refers to derivatives linked to ETH rather than coins sitting in spot wallets. Depending on the data set, it may cover dated futures, perpetual futures, options, or a combination. A chart should state its scope instead of treating every ETH-linked contract as one interchangeable market.

How a new contract affects OI
When a buyer and seller create a new futures contract, one contract is added to open interest. The same contract has a long side and a short side; OI counts the contract once under the venue’s convention, not as two bullish contracts. If either party later offsets the position, the contract leaves OI. Settlement, exercise or expiration can also reduce OI according to the instrument’s rules and the reporting method.
This is why OI is a stock: it is the amount still outstanding at a timestamp. It does not tell you how many contracts changed hands since the previous timestamp.
Why OI is not “the number of longs”
Every open futures contract has a long and a short counterparty. A total such as 50,000 ETH contracts therefore does not mean that 50,000 contracts are betting on a higher price. It means that 50,000 contracts remain open, with matching long and short obligations. Traders can also use derivatives to hedge spot holdings or another derivative position, so the exposure may not be a simple directional bet.

Options OI is specific to an underlying asset, strike, expiration and option type. A provider may report contract counts, ETH quantity or a dollar value, and may provide a sum across expirations. For example, the Binance options market-data API exposes OI fields by underlying and expiration, including quantity, USD value and a timestamp. An options total without those fields is difficult to compare with a perpetual-futures total.
What Ethereum trading volume counts
Volume is the number of contracts traded during a defined period: a minute, hour, day or another interval. It includes trades that open positions, trades that close them, and trades that transfer exposure between participants. A high-volume period can therefore end with little or no change in OI.
The transfer example
Imagine 100 ETH futures positions are open at 10:00. During the next hour, 40 contracts trade, but each transaction transfers an existing position rather than creating a new contract or closing one. Hourly volume is 40 while OI remains 100. The activity is real, but it did not add outstanding contracts.

The exact treatment of a reported trade quantity depends on the venue and contract design. CME’s volume and OI reporting explanation identifies volume as contracts traded on the selected date and OI as contracts entered but not yet offset. Apply the same venue’s definitions when comparing values.

One contract can be traded many times inside the interval. Consequently, volume cannot tell you how many participants were active, how long they held positions or whether the activity was concentrated in a few large accounts. It is a turnover measure, not a headcount.
How OI and volume change together
The simplest way to understand the mechanics is to separate opening, closing and transfer trades.
| Trade situation | Volume during the trade | Effect on OI |
|---|---|---|
| Two participants create a new contract | Increases | Increases |
| Both sides offset an existing contract | Increases | Decreases |
| An existing position changes hands without opening or closing the contract | Increases | Usually unchanged |
| No trading in the interval | Unchanged | Can still change later through settlement, exercise or expiry under the instrument’s rules |
Real venues may apply detailed matching and reporting conventions, so the table is a conceptual guide rather than a claim that every product reports every event identically.
Scope your ETH data before comparing it
“Ethereum open interest” is incomplete until you identify what is included. Record these dimensions next to every value:
- Instrument: dated futures, perpetual futures or options.
- Underlying and option terms: for options, include expiration, strike and call/put scope where relevant.
- Venue coverage: one exchange, a named group of exchanges or an all-venue aggregate.
- Unit: contracts, ETH quantity or USD/notional value.
- Timestamp and interval: OI at a particular time versus volume accumulated between two times.
- Contract convention: contract size, settlement method and whether the displayed OI is one count per open contract.
- Data source and refresh behavior: the provider’s documented update or cache interval, without treating documentation as a guaranteed live-delivery promise.
CoinGlass’s ETH futures page illustrates the need to distinguish exchange-level views from an aggregate view. Its API documentation describes quantity and USD fields and a documented 10-second cache/update frequency for an exchange-list OI endpoint; that is a product specification that can change, not a universal freshness guarantee for every chart or provider. See the endpoint documentation for the stated fields and cadence.

Units: contracts, ETH and dollars are different measurements
Two OI values can appear to disagree simply because one is measured in contracts and another in coin quantity or notional dollars. Contract sizes also differ between products. A “contract” is not automatically one ETH.
Contract count
Contract count is useful when comparing the same instrument and venue over time. It becomes misleading when products have different contract multipliers or when one source mixes instruments.
ETH quantity
ETH-denominated OI estimates the amount of underlying represented by open contracts. It can make products with different contract sizes easier to compare, but the conversion rule must be known.

USD or notional value
Dollar OI changes when ETH’s price changes even if the number of open contracts does not. A rising USD total can therefore reflect price appreciation rather than additional contracts. State whether the value is mark-to-market, notional or another venue-defined measure.
Normalize before calculating a change
For a same-source time series, a percentage change can be calculated as (current OI − previous OI) ÷ previous OI × 100. Use the same unit, instrument, venue set and timestamp basis in both observations. Do not compare a USD aggregate at one provider with an ETH-denominated single-exchange figure and call the difference market growth.
Reading price, OI and volume together
Combining the three series provides context about participation and turnover. It does not reveal trader intent or guarantee a price outcome.

| Observed combination | What it may describe | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Price rising, OI rising | More derivatives contracts remain open while ETH rises; participation or outstanding exposure is growing. | Whether the new exposure is directional long, directional short, a hedge, or a mixture. |
| Price rising, OI falling | Existing positions are being reduced as price rises; short covering is one possible explanation. | Whether short covering caused the move, which traders closed, and whether other positions replaced them. |
| Volume rising, OI nearly unchanged | Trading is active but exposure is turning over, closing or changing hands rather than accumulating. | The balance between opening, closing and transfer activity. |
| OI rising, volume modest | Outstanding exposure is increasing relative to recent turnover. | Whether the positions are hedges, how concentrated they are and what risk they carry. |
These are possible readings, not deterministic signals. Binance Academy’s explanation of OI likewise cautions that OI does not directly predict where price will move. Direction requires price action and market context, while intent and hedge ratios require information not contained in aggregate OI and volume.
A repeatable workflow for analyzing a chart
- Name the instrument. Write “ETH perpetual futures,” “CME ETH futures” or the exact options scope rather than simply “ETH derivatives.”
- Record the venue set. Note the exchange or exchanges and whether the total is an aggregate. Check which venues the provider actually covers.
- Match units. Put OI and any comparison series in contracts, ETH or USD as appropriate. If you convert, document the contract multiplier and price used.
- Align time bases. Plot OI as snapshots at defined timestamps and volume as totals over clearly labeled intervals. A daily OI close should not be compared with an hourly volume bar without explaining the mismatch.
- Check the provider’s definitions. Read the venue’s methodology for contract size, settlement, exercise, expiry and whether one open contract is counted once.
- Inspect price alongside both metrics. Mark whether price, OI and volume rose, fell or stayed broadly flat in the same interval.
- Describe, do not predict. Use language such as “consistent with increased outstanding exposure” or “could reflect closing activity.” Avoid claiming that a combination proves a long buildup, liquidation or an imminent move.
- Record the observation time and source. Aggregated feeds can update on a schedule, and historical values can be revised when a provider changes normalization.
How to compare single-exchange and aggregate OI
A single exchange gives a clearly defined venue but may omit activity elsewhere. An aggregate can show a broader market view, yet its total depends on which exchanges contribute and how their contracts are normalized. Two aggregators can therefore publish different “total ETH OI” figures without either being arithmetically wrong.
Questions to ask about an aggregate
- Which exchanges and instruments are included?
- Are perpetuals, dated futures and options separated?
- Are inverse and linear contracts converted to a common ETH or USD unit?
- Are stale, missing or duplicate records filtered?
- Is the displayed timestamp the observation time or the provider’s last update time?
Use one provider consistently when examining a trend, and label any cross-provider comparison as approximate unless the methodologies are demonstrably aligned.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Instrument-specific cautions
Perpetual futures
Perpetuals have no scheduled expiry, so OI can persist until traders close, are liquidated or otherwise reduce exposure. Funding mechanisms and margin rules affect participant behavior, but aggregate OI alone does not show which side is paying or receiving funding.
Dated futures
OI can fall as contracts approach settlement or expiry even when traders remain active in a later contract. A chart that does not roll or separate maturities may mistake contract migration for broad exposure leaving the market.
Options
Options OI must be segmented by expiration, strike and call/put status to be meaningful. A large call OI number does not establish bullish intent: an option can be bought, sold, hedged or part of a spread. Compare options OI with options volume only when the same contract definitions and units are used.

Common interpretation mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating OI as net bullish positions
Fix: remember that every open futures contract contains a long and a short. Describe outstanding contracts, not “the number of longs.”
Mistake: assuming high volume means OI must rise
Fix: check whether the interval’s trades opened new contracts, closed old ones or transferred exposure. High volume can leave OI unchanged or lower.
Mistake: mixing futures and options
Fix: separate the instruments and state the options’ expirations and strikes. A combined number is useful only if the provider explicitly defines a defensible common measure.
Mistake: comparing unlike units
Fix: convert contract counts, ETH quantity and USD notional only with a documented contract multiplier and price basis.
Mistake: reading a snapshot as a trend
Fix: inspect a time series with consistent timestamps. One OI print says how much was open then; it does not say how quickly positions accumulated or how long they were held.
Mistake: treating an API refresh interval as real-time truth
Fix: distinguish a provider’s documented cache or update cadence from a live-market guarantee, and show the data timestamp on the chart.
Mistake: inferring leverage or liquidation risk from aggregate OI alone
Fix: treat OI as a participation measure. Margin, collateral, position concentration, liquidation data and contract rules are separate information requirements.

Using OI and volume without overstating the signal
Use OI to ask, “How much derivative exposure remains outstanding?” Use volume to ask, “How much contract trading occurred during this interval?” Then use price to place those observations in market context. A rising OI reading can accompany either bullish or bearish positions; a volume spike can represent opening, closing or transfer activity. The most defensible conclusion is descriptive: these metrics show participation, outstanding exposure and turnover, not trader motive or a guaranteed forecast.
When publishing or sharing a chart, put the scope in the title or caption: for example, “ETH perpetual-futures OI, USD notional, exchanges included, 15-minute snapshots; volume, contracts traded per 15 minutes.” That single line prevents many false comparisons.
