There is no DEX aggregator that gives the best result on every Ethereum swap. Routing can search several pools, divide an order, or send an intent to competing solvers. The right choice depends on your trade size, available liquidity, pool fees, network cost, slippage protection and the route available when you request the quote.
Compare the complete expected result—tokens received after all fees and execution costs—not the headline exchange rate. A longer route or solver fill is worthwhile only when its price improvement exceeds its extra costs and execution risks.
What an aggregator’s route changes
Ethereum liquidity is fragmented across protocols, pools, fee tiers and market makers. If a large order is sent through one pool, it can consume a substantial share of that pool’s available liquidity. Automated market maker (AMM) pricing usually worsens as the order takes more liquidity, and the effect can become non-linear for larger trades. A router can search alternatives and allocate the order where the combined execution is better.
One pool versus several sources
A direct route sends the entire input through one pool or one market. An aggregator can test different pools, fee tiers and intermediate tokens. For example, part of a token sale might use one pool while the remainder uses another with a different fee tier. The displayed effective price is the combined outcome of those portions, including the relevant pool and route fees. The mechanism is explained in 1inch’s explanation of split routes.

Why more hops are not automatically better
An intermediate token can connect your pair to deeper liquidity, but each additional pool introduces another price calculation and usually another fee. It also makes the transaction more complex and can increase gas use. Uniswap says its router simulates alternatives and adds a step only when the expected price improvement is greater than the added network cost; its description is specific to that router, not proof that every aggregator makes the same decision. AMM pool routes and intent or solver routes
“Aggregator” can describe two materially different execution models. Knowing which model produced your quote is essential when comparing execution.

AMM routing
With an AMM route, the aggregator calculates a path through pools and submits a transaction that performs the swaps. A path may be direct, multi-hop or split among pools. The quoted output changes with pool reserves, fees, gas prices and the size of your order.

An intent states what you want—such as selling one token for at least a specified amount of another—without prescribing every pool call. Solvers compete to satisfy that order. The UniswapX whitepaper describes a non-custodial Dutch-auction protocol in which users sign orders, fillers obtain liquidity and submit settlement transactions, and filler gas costs are recovered through execution economics. A user interface that feels “gas-free” therefore is not necessarily cost-free; compare the complete amount received.

Uniswap API’s documented UniswapX condition
Uniswap’s current API documentation says it can include a UniswapX route when an order exceeds 300 USDC equivalent, or when the UniswapX quote improves on the AMM route by at least 0.2%. For orders at or below 300 USDC equivalent, the improvement condition applies. These are implementation rules for that API, not universal thresholds for other aggregators or a measurement of market-wide performance. The API may return a UniswapX path instead of AMM split details, and solver participation can change between quote requests. How route construction affects your effective price
Trade size and depth
Small trades often fit inside the most liquid pool without moving its price much. As size rises, splitting can reduce the amount taken from any one pool. That benefit is not guaranteed: if the second pool is shallow, has a high fee tier or requires an expensive hop, the split can cost more than it saves.
Pool fees and price impact
Every pool charges according to its design and fee tier. A route with a nominally attractive spot price can produce less output after pool fees and price impact. Compare the simulated output for your exact input amount, not a rate copied from a token page or a smaller test trade.
Gas and network costs
Each additional swap call, approval or settlement operation can add network cost. For a small order, an extra hop may consume most of the apparent price improvement. For a large order, a more complex route can still be worthwhile if it avoids enough price impact. The relevant calculation is:

net value received = quoted output − pool fees − service or infrastructure fees − network cost
Use the units that matter for your decision. If you are comparing how many USDC you receive, convert gas and service charges into USDC at the quote time rather than ignoring them.
A practical method for comparing aggregators
Run the comparison for the same token pair, amount, wallet and execution window. Routes are live decisions, so results collected at different times may not be comparable.

Record the sell token, buy token, input amount, wallet network and whether the transaction must complete by a particular deadline. A route that works for a small test amount may be unsuitable for the full order.
- Request quotes close together. Capture the quoted output, quote timestamp, route type and expiration or validity information. Pool reserves, gas prices and solver participation can change between requests.
- Identify the execution model. Determine whether the quote is an on-chain AMM transaction, a signed intent, or an interface that can choose either. Do not compare an indicative solver quote with a firm transaction quote as though they carry the same commitment.
- Inspect the path. Look for direct, multi-hop and split execution; pool names or fee tiers where shown; and the portion allocated to each leg. Uniswap says its app exposes pool and split information in the route view. A hidden path is not automatically bad, but it gives you less information to diagnose a poor fill.
- Calculate net output. Subtract displayed route, service, infrastructure and network costs from the expected output. Some interfaces include gas in the quote, while others show it separately. Confirm which convention is being used before ranking the results.
- Check protections. Review slippage tolerance, minimum received, deadline, token approval scope and whether the quote is soft or a signed order commitment. A high gross output is not useful if the transaction can execute below the amount you need.
- Recheck immediately before signing. Refresh the quote and verify that the route, output, gas estimate and validity period have not changed. Do not assume an aggregator will choose the same path on a later attempt.
- Verify settlement afterward. Use the transaction receipt to confirm the actual token amounts, fees and any partial or failed fill. Keep the quote and receipt if you need to investigate a discrepancy.
Understanding split routes in practice
A split route divides the input into portions that execute at different rates. The interface’s effective rate is an aggregate, not the rate of any single pool. One leg may have a better spot price but a higher fee; another may have lower fees but less depth. The router’s optimization is the combined result after those effects.

When splitting can help
- The order is large relative to the depth of the best single pool.
- Several pools have usable liquidity at competitive fee tiers.
- The expected reduction in price impact exceeds the extra gas and pool fees.
When splitting can hurt
- The order is small, so the extra transaction steps dominate the savings.
- One leg uses a shallow pool or an expensive fee tier.
- Network congestion raises the cost of a multi-call transaction.
- Prices move while the route is being signed, making one portion less attractive than quoted.
Fees, resolver fills and “gas-free” language
Fee treatment depends on the product path, not just the company name. The 1inch fee guidance distinguishes intent-based or resolver fills from transactions routed through its DEX aggregator: some interface paths can have gas covered by resolvers, while DEX-aggregator transactions may pass network gas and infrastructure fees to the user. Check the actual quote and transaction details for the route you selected.
For an intent, a solver that pays the settlement gas still needs compensation. That compensation can appear as a less favorable exchange rate, an explicit fee or both. Compare the final amount you receive and the minimum guaranteed amount, not a “zero gas” label in isolation.

A March 2, 2025 preprint, Execution Welfare Across Solver-based DEXes by Yuki Yuminaga, Dex Chen and Danning Sui, examined USDC-WETH and PEPE-WETH. It reported that solver-based protocols improved execution welfare versus vanilla Uniswap V2/V3 routing in certain trade-size ranges. The improvement was more pronounced for USDC-WETH than PEPE-WETH, and results differed among CoW Swap, 1inch Fusion and UniswapX. The authors also discuss possible inefficiencies arising from solver-market structure and inventory depth. The study is useful evidence that execution model can matter, but it covers two asset profiles and a specific comparison method; it is not a current ranking of every aggregator. Common problems and how to diagnose them
The displayed route changes after refresh
This is expected when reserves, gas prices or solver availability change. Save the new quote details and compare again at the same moment rather than relying on an earlier screenshot.

The solver quote disappears or falls back to an AMM
A solver may be unable or unwilling to fill at the requested terms. If the interface permits fallback, it can return an AMM route instead. Confirm which model you are signing and whether the minimum output changed.
The transaction receives less than the preview
Check slippage settings, quote age, network conditions and the receipt’s individual transfers. A preview is not always a guarantee; a signed intent may have a hard minimum, while an ordinary AMM transaction relies on its slippage and minimum-output parameters.
A complex route has a worse net result
Compare gas and every pool fee against the price-impact saving. Remove the assumption that more hops mean better execution: the route is beneficial only when its extra output exceeds its added costs.

Decision framework: which route should you choose?
- Choose the highest net output with acceptable protections when two quotes use comparable execution commitments and the difference is clear after costs.
- Favor transparent AMM details when you need to audit pools, fee tiers or hop-by-hop behavior and the net result is competitive.
- Consider a solver route when its firm or well-defined minimum output beats the AMM alternative after all costs, and you understand the order’s validity and fallback behavior.
- Recheck large trades carefully because splitting and solver inventory can materially change the result as liquidity is consumed.
- Do not generalize from one quote to a permanent winner. Asset pair, amount, market conditions, gas price and solver participation determine the route that is best for that particular swap.
