In 2026, the right Ethereum alternative depends on what you mean by “alternative.” Solana, Cardano, and Polkadot are independent networks with distinct architectures. Ethereum Layer 2s offer another route: they can make Ethereum-linked activity cheaper, but their data and security arrangements vary. Choose by application, trust assumptions, and wallet and asset support—not by a single claim about speed or fees.
First decide whether you want a different blockchain or a cheaper Ethereum route
Ethereum alternatives usually fall into two groups. Independent networks have their own protocol rules and economic and security arrangements. Ethereum Layer 2 networks (L2s) are separate execution environments that may connect back to Ethereum in different ways; they are not all equivalent to Ethereum itself.
Rollups post data to Ethereum. Networks that store data elsewhere are independent rather than direct Ethereum extensions, according to Ethereum.org’s Layer 2 explainer. The distinction matters because where data is available and how transactions settle affect the network’s trust assumptions.

Ethereum.org says the Fusaka upgrade in December 2025 introduced PeerDAS to make data posting and retrieval more efficient for L2s. It also notes there is no official Ethereum L2: the ecosystem is permissionless, and different teams can implement different designs. An L2 label alone therefore does not establish a network’s safety; technology, smart-contract security, and maturity matter.

How the main Ethereum alternatives differ
| Option | Network model | Execution and design | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solana | Independent smart-contract network | Programs execute on-chain; mutable state is held in separate accounts. Transactions execute atomically: all instructions succeed together, or state changes are reverted. | Understand confirmation states and the application’s wallet and asset support. |
| Cardano | Independent proof-of-stake blockchain | Uses an extended UTXO accounting model, native tokens, and smart-contract validator scripts. | Check whether the applications and tools you need support its model. |
| Polkadot | Heterogeneous multi-chain protocol | Specialized parachains can share security and interoperability. Some parachains support smart contracts, including EVM-compatible deployments. | Identify the particular parachain and its available applications; the protocol is not one uniform execution environment. |
| Ethereum L2 | Separate network connected to Ethereum in a design-dependent way | Rollups post data to Ethereum; other networks may store data elsewhere. | Review data availability, settlement, smart-contract risks, and maturity rather than treating all L2s alike. |
Solana: a distinct program-and-account model
Solana’s documentation describes on-chain programs as code and accounts as the holders of mutable state. A transaction can contain multiple instructions, which execute atomically: either they all succeed or the state changes are reverted.
Solana’s documentation describes Proof of History as a sequence of hashes that helps establish ordering and elapsed time. It is one part of Solana’s design, not a standalone consensus mechanism or a guarantee of performance.

Cardano: proof of stake, eUTXO, and on-chain governance
Cardano describes itself as a public proof-of-stake blockchain. Its guide covers ada transfers, token creation, applications, and on-chain governance. The design uses Ouroboros consensus and an extended UTXO accounting model, with native tokens and validator scripts for smart contracts.
Cardano says blocks appear roughly every 20 seconds. This is Cardano’s own approximate block-interval description, not an independent throughput test or an apples-to-apples comparison with other networks.

Cardano also says that since 2025 its protocol rules, upgrades, and treasury have been decided on-chain by ada holders, stake pool operators, and an elected committee. That governance arrangement is a design consideration; it does not by itself establish investment returns or guarantee a particular outcome from a vote. Cardano: What is Cardano?
Polkadot: a network of specialized parachains
Polkadot’s model is not simply one general-purpose chain competing with Ethereum. Its official comparison describes a heterogeneous multi-chain protocol in which parachains can be specialized while sharing security and interoperability. Ethereum, by contrast, is described there through its general-purpose EVM and rollup scaling approach.

L2s can suit people who want lower-cost activity connected to Ethereum, but their designs and maturity differ. Ethereum.org’s L2 explainer recommends considering technology, smart-contract security, and maturity. For each network, establish where transaction data is stored, how the system settles, and what risks or operational controls apply.
Ethereum.org’s network directory organizes networks by maturity and says its assessment considers factors including time in production, total value locked (TVL), and risks. The directory was last updated October 6, 2026. As displayed on that date, it listed indicative average transaction fees of $0.002 for Base, $0.004 for Arbitrum One, $0.008 for Starknet, and $0.003 for Scroll. The passage reviewed does not state the calculation method for those fee snapshots, so treat them as dated indicators, not guaranteed costs or a like-for-like ranking. Directory market-share figures are also snapshots, not stable measures of safety.

- Decide what you need. If you want a different network with its own rules, evaluate independent options such as Solana, Cardano, or Polkadot. If your priority is lower-cost Ethereum-linked activity, assess L2s separately.
- Check application fit. Confirm that the specific apps, assets, developer tools, and wallet support you need are available on the network or parachain you intend to use. Availability changes over time.
- Understand the trust model. For an L2, examine data availability, settlement, smart-contract risks, and maturity. For an independent chain, understand its consensus and execution design rather than assuming Ethereum’s security arrangements apply.
- Compare costs and performance carefully. Compare the same kind of transaction over the same time period, using a stated measurement method. The official sources cited here do not provide a common, independent current benchmark across these networks for fees, throughput, security, or adoption.
- Review governance and operational details. Find out how protocol changes are made and what confirmation status your application requires. Do not infer staking returns from a description of consensus or participation.
Are any alternatives simply better than Ethereum?
There is no evidence here for a universal winner. Solana, Cardano, Polkadot, and Ethereum L2s differ in execution models, governance, settlement, and practical ecosystem fit. Ethereum.org’s maturity categories and point-in-time fee display can help narrow an L2 search, but a displayed low fee does not prove equivalent security. The Ethereum Foundation’s March 23, 2026 article argues that a single chain cannot meet every need of a global onchain economy; the practical implication is to match the network to the task rather than rank unlike systems on one number.
