No: Ethena’s latest dated allocation data does not show more than half of USDe backing allocated to lending. At September 30, 2026, DeFi lending was 44% of Ethena’s liquid-cash category, which was 74% of total backing. That works out to about 32.6% of total backing. Including a separately reported institutional-lending category raises the estimate to about 38.5%, still below half. The percentages are calculations from rounded figures in Ethena’s update, not percentages it directly published for total backing.
What Ethena’s lending percentages measure
The apparent discrepancy comes down to the denominator. Ethena’s September 30 allocation snapshot reported $4.95 billion in total backing, of which $3.7 billion—74%—was classified as liquid cash. That category includes stablecoins, DeFi lending positions, and institutional lending.
Within liquid cash, stablecoins on loan in DeFi lending markets accounted for 44% at quarter end. Ethena reported institutional lending separately at 8% of liquid cash. Neither percentage is a share of all USDe backing.

|---|---|---|
| Total backing | $4.95 billion | Ethena’s September 30 backing denominator |
| Liquid cash | $3.7 billion; 74% of backing | Category that includes stablecoins and lending positions |
| DeFi lending | 44% of liquid cash | Stablecoins on loan in DeFi lending markets |
| Institutional lending | 8% of liquid cash | A separate lending category |
On the rounded reported shares, multiplying 44% by 74% gives an estimated 32.6% of total backing in DeFi lending. Combining DeFi and institutional lending first, then multiplying 52% by 74%, gives an estimated 38.5% of total backing. These are derived estimates; Ethena did not publish either as a direct total-backing percentage. Ethena’s July–September 2026 Governance Update reports the underlying figures.

Why “USDe deposits in lending markets” is a different figure
The same update tracks USDe-related deposits across Aave, Morpho, Jupiter Lend, and Kamino. Those markets held a combined $2.98 billion in reported USDe-related deposits on September 30, up from $2.76 billion on July 1. This is a measure of Ethena assets deposited in external lending venues; it is not the amount or share of Ethena’s own backing allocated to lending.
Within that total, USDe deposits rose from $1.89 billion on July 1 to $2.40 billion on September 30, while sUSDe deposits fell from $0.86 billion to $0.57 billion. Venue figures also changed: Aave declined from $1.95 billion to $1.67 billion, while Morpho grew from $0.29 billion to $0.87 billion. Jupiter Lend was reported in a $0.20–$0.26 billion range and Kamino in a $0.24–$0.27 billion range. These figures describe lending-market deposits, not reserve allocation.

How the allocation changed during the quarter
Ethena’s reported share of liquid cash in stablecoins on loan in DeFi lending markets fell from 52% at the start of July to 44% at September 30. Institutional lending was listed separately from mid-July and reached 8% of liquid cash by quarter end. Ethena stables accounted for 3% of liquid cash at September 30, while blue-chip stables accounted for 36%.

Other reported backing categories help show why the liquid-cash denominator is not the whole portfolio. Ethena listed $0.84 billion, or 17% of backing, in hedged BTC and ETH positions, and $0.28 billion, or 6%, in real-world-asset positions identified as JAAA and STAC. These are September 30 allocation figures.

What the newer October 12 figures do—and do not—show
Ethena’s update also gives a later solvency snapshot dated October 12, 2026: $4.83 billion in backing assets, including the Reserve Fund, against $4.76 billion in USDe supply, for a reported backing ratio of 101.43%. The Reserve Fund was $62.57 million, compared with a recommended size of $45.7 million.
Those October 12 figures are newer than the September 30 allocation data, but they do not include an updated lending-allocation percentage. The 101.43% backing ratio is not evidence that a particular share of backing was on loan on October 12; the latest explicit lending allocation in the update is for September 30.

The update says the Reserve Fund sizing methodology incorporates stressed funding-rate history, estimated slippage when closing short perpetual positions and selling spot assets, a 4.5% buffer for RWA backing, and a fixed $20 million PSM buffer. These are inputs to the stated sizing method, not a guarantee that reserves would cover every possible loss.

How to check Ethena’s backing disclosures
- Open the July–September 2026 Governance Update and identify the date attached to the figure you are using. September 30 is the allocation snapshot; October 12 is the later solvency snapshot.
- Check the denominator before interpreting a percentage. The 44% DeFi-lending and 8% institutional-lending figures use liquid cash, not total backing.
- Keep backing allocations separate from lending-market deposits. The $2.98 billion figure covers reported USDe-related deposits across four markets, rather than Ethena’s share of backing deployed in lending.
- For on-chain position context, consult Ethena’s Real-Time Dashboards documentation and Positions Dashboard guidance.
Ethena cautions that Copper and Ceffu use omnibus custody solutions. Their deposit addresses show initial direct-mint deposits, not the current value of assets held by the protocol. Ethena says this address behavior does not compromise the protocol’s ownership or claim on backing held in either solution.
