Eternal Anima and Chrono Trigger both make time central to a turn-based JRPG, but they use it in fundamentally different ways. Eternal Anima, Marvelous’s unreleased game, gives Wade Psychometry: the ability to read memories embedded in objects, inherit abilities and classes, and work with ancestors and descendants. A hands-on preview also describes Future Sight, which shows upcoming turns and attacks and may let the player rewind a predicted mistake. Chrono Trigger instead makes physical travel between eras the structure of its adventure. Crono’s party visits the distant past, a ruined future, and the End of Time, then changes history while seeking a way to prevent planetary catastrophe.
That distinction carries into combat. Eternal Anima is advertised as command-based turn combat enhanced by prediction and inherited classes. Chrono Trigger uses Active Time Battle Version 2: gauges fill while the fight continues, enemy positions change, and characters combine Techs into more than 50 dual and triple attacks. If you want time as a character ability and decision-making tool, Eternal Anima is the closer fit. If you want time as world navigation, historical consequence, and party coordination, Chrono Trigger remains the more direct example.
What each game means by “time travel”
The phrase “time-travel JRPG” can describe several different designs. A game may let you visit different eras as locations, use memories to understand earlier events, alter a timeline, predict a turn, or all of those at once. Eternal Anima and Chrono Trigger sit at different points on that spectrum, so comparing them by setting alone gives a misleading result.
Eternal Anima: time as memory, inheritance, and prediction
Marvelous presents Eternal Anima as a story-led, single-player, story-rich, turn-based tactical JRPG with fantasy and science-fiction elements. Wade’s defining ability is Psychometry. By reading memories that remain in objects, he can connect with lives from earlier periods and inherit their abilities and classes. The time-related fantasy is therefore personal and investigative: an object carries evidence of someone who lived before, and Wade turns that trace into a practical capability.

The advertised story also involves cooperation across generations. Wade can team up with ancestors and descendants, and the player’s objective is to save a damaged present by engaging with the past. The past is not merely a backdrop to visit; it is a source of knowledge, relationships, and skills that Wade brings into the present.
A recent hands-on preview adds a second layer called Future Sight. It reports that Wade can see upcoming turns and attacks, then rewind a predicted bad outcome and select another action. This makes time a decision-support system inside a battle rather than a separate map screen. Because Eternal Anima has not been released, the exact limits, costs, frequency, and balance of Psychometry and Future Sight should be treated as previewed or advertised features, not final specifications.
Chrono Trigger: time as the map, the plot, and the consequence
Square Enix’s official description sends Crono and his companions through the forgotten past, a distant future, and the End of Time. Each era supplies a different view of the world and its crisis. The party observes how events in one period affect another, then acts on that information to pursue a way to prevent planetary catastrophe.

In Chrono Trigger, time travel is therefore the organizing structure of exploration and storytelling. The party physically moves between eras, encounters societies at different stages of history, and sees consequences unfold over centuries. The player’s role is not primarily to read an object’s memory or preview an attack; it is to become an agent who can intervene in history and coordinate a group across a long timeline.
The game’s time travel is also tightly connected to progression. New information, allies, and locations can change what is possible in another era. The result is a cause-and-effect adventure in which history is both the setting and the problem the party must solve.
How the stories use time differently
| Story axis | Eternal Anima | Chrono Trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Primary time mechanic | Psychometry reads memories in objects; Wade inherits abilities and classes from earlier lives. | The party travels physically among multiple eras and the End of Time. |
| Relationship between past and present | The past supplies memories, inherited capabilities, and people who can cooperate with Wade; the goal is to repair a damaged present. | Events in different eras reveal consequences and create opportunities to change history while pursuing a solution to planetary catastrophe. |
| Player fantasy | Read traces of earlier lives, learn from them, and make better-informed interventions. | Become a traveler through history whose actions reshape the course of the world. |
| Evidence status | Pre-release descriptions and limited preview material; the complete structure remains subject to change. | Established behavior documented in the official game description and publisher material. |
The meaningful similarity is not that both games offer identical portals or timelines. It is that both make time affect what the player does. The important difference is where that effect lives: Eternal Anima places it in Wade’s perception, inheritance, and battle choices, while Chrono Trigger places it in era-based exploration, historical consequences, and party progression.

Combat: predicted choices versus active gauges
Eternal Anima’s advertised command combat
Eternal Anima is described as turn-based tactical combat. You issue commands rather than directly controlling every movement in real time, but Psychometry gives those commands a time-linked context. Inherited classes and abilities can change what Wade or his team are capable of, while Future Sight, according to the hands-on preview, exposes upcoming turns and attacks before they happen.

The practical loop suggested by those features is:
- Read the situation. Use the available prediction to see an upcoming attack, turn, or unfavorable result.
- Choose a command. Select an action using Wade’s current class, inherited abilities, and the tactical position of the party.
- Check the consequence. If the preview shows a poor outcome, the player can reportedly rewind that predicted sequence.
- Rebuild the plan. Try another action or ability instead of accepting the first forecast.
This is a form of time manipulation at the level of decision-making. The player is not necessarily jumping to another historical era during a fight; the player is using knowledge of what is about to happen to refine a turn. The class-inheritance system may also make party construction feel like assembling a history of learned capabilities, although the final rules for that system have not been published.
Chrono Trigger’s Active Time Battle Version 2
Chrono Trigger does not use static menu turns in which the whole battlefield pauses until every character has acted. Square Enix’s official store description calls its system Active Time Battle Version 2. During encounters, time continues, each character receives commands when that character’s gauge fills, and enemy positions change as the battle proceeds.

That creates three pressures that are absent from ordinary round-based combat:
- Gauge timing: You must wait for individual gauges to fill and decide when each character is ready.
- Moving targets: Enemy positions change while time passes, so an area attack or line-based action may be better or worse depending on when it is used.
- Coordination: The party can combine abilities into dual and triple Techs, turning character selection and timing into part of the tactical puzzle.
Square Enix states that the game offers more than 50 combinations between two and three characters. Its official description summarizes the timing requirement this way: “During battle, time will not stop, and you can enter commands when the character’s gauge is full. The enemies’ positions will change as time passes, so choose your actions based on any given situation.” That is a concise description of why Chrono Trigger feels more dynamic than a conventional menu-driven system even though it remains command based.

Are the games actually similar?
Yes, but the similarity is conceptual rather than mechanical. Both ask you to treat time as something that changes play, not as decorative science-fiction language. Both connect time to information: Eternal Anima gives Wade memories and forecasts, while Chrono Trigger gives the party knowledge of events across eras. Both also connect time to teamwork, through inherited capabilities and generational cooperation in Eternal Anima, and through party Techs and coordinated era-spanning progress in Chrono Trigger.

They are not interchangeable experiences. Chrono Trigger’s central question is, “What can this party do across history to prevent a catastrophe?” Eternal Anima’s advertised question is closer to, “What can Wade learn from the traces of earlier lives, and how can that knowledge change the next decision?” One makes chronology the world map; the other makes it part of a character’s toolkit.
Which game fits your preferences?
Choose Eternal Anima if you want time inside the character system
- You prefer a protagonist whose signature power directly affects investigation, progression, and combat.
- You like the idea of turning memories in physical objects into classes and abilities.
- You enjoy tactical planning supported by information about what is likely to happen next.
- You want a story about repairing the present through contact with people and experiences from the past.
- You are comfortable evaluating an unreleased game whose final balance and systems may still change.
Choose Chrono Trigger if you want a classic era-spanning adventure
- You want to visit distinct historical periods, including a distant future and the End of Time.
- You enjoy seeing how actions and discoveries in one era affect another.
- You prefer battles where gauges fill continuously and enemy positions change during the encounter.
- You want a documented system of dual and triple Techs with more than 50 advertised combinations.
- You value a known, established game rather than a pre-release design.
If you are looking for “Chrono Trigger-style combat”
Eternal Anima should not be described as having Chrono Trigger-style combat based on the available evidence. Both are command-based JRPGs, but Chrono Trigger’s defining battle features are Active Time Battle Version 2, moving enemies, and timed Tech combinations. Eternal Anima’s distinctive features are prediction through Future Sight and progression through Psychometry and inherited classes. A player who wants constant gauge pressure and spatial timing should look to Chrono Trigger; a player who wants to reconsider a turn after seeing its likely consequence may find Eternal Anima more relevant.
What remains uncertain about Eternal Anima
Because Eternal Anima is unreleased, several important purchasing and comparison questions cannot be answered definitively from the available material. The descriptions establish its advertised identity and the previewed Future Sight behavior, but they do not establish the complete story length, every class, the number of playable characters, the exact rules or resource costs for rewinding, the final encounter balance, or the definitive release availability. Those details should be checked again when Marvelous publishes final information and the game launches.
This uncertainty does not make the comparison meaningless. It changes the confidence level. Chrono Trigger’s combat and time-travel structure can be discussed as established features. Eternal Anima’s Psychometry-centered design can be discussed as the game’s announced premise, while Future Sight and other preview details should remain qualified until the final version is available.
A practical decision guide
- Decide what “time travel” means to you. If you want to explore several eras and alter history, Chrono Trigger matches that desire directly. If you want memories, inheritance, and prediction to affect individual decisions, Eternal Anima is the closer match.
- Choose your preferred battle rhythm. Continuous gauges and moving enemies point to Chrono Trigger. Forecasting an outcome and revising a command points to Eternal Anima’s advertised system.
- Consider how much system certainty matters. Chrono Trigger’s mechanics are established. Eternal Anima’s final rules, balance, and availability remain subject to change before release.
- Separate story interest from mechanical expectations. You can be interested in Eternal Anima’s generational premise without expecting a remake of Chrono Trigger’s ATB and Tech design.
Bottom line
Eternal Anima and Chrono Trigger are best understood as two interpretations of time-based JRPG design. Eternal Anima puts time into Psychometry, inherited classes, memories, and a previewed Future Sight system that can inform or revise battle choices. Chrono Trigger makes time the structure of its world, sending a party through multiple eras and pairing that journey with Active Time Battle Version 2 and more than 50 dual and triple Tech combinations. The former is about perceiving and inheriting time; the latter is about traveling through and changing it.
