Eternal Anima is a time-traveling Japanese role-playing game from Marvelous, scheduled for worldwide release on March 4, 2027. It is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Rather than using time travel only as a story device, the game ties different eras to exploration, character progression and turn-based combat.
What is Eternal Anima?
Previously shown under the working title PROJECT LIFE is RPG, Eternal Anima follows Wade, a protagonist from the floating kingdom of Urvis Ael. The kingdom is described as the last bastion in a world consumed by an endless sea. Wade challenges a prohibition on progress, is branded a heretic and flees toward the Forbidden Seas.
The journey spans the past and present of four lost continents, multiple cultures and several generations. Marvelous frames the central theme with the line, “To free the present, one must save the past…” The player works with ancestors and descendants, and choices made in earlier eras can change conditions in the present.

Marvelous describes the project as an homage to the golden era of late-1990s and early-2000s JRPGs, updated with modern visuals and tactical systems. That is a statement of creative direction, not a guarantee of final quality; the game’s launch performance, balance and overall polish remain unverified until release.

How the time-travel system works
Past actions affect the present
Eternal Anima treats history as an interactive layer. Wade moves between eras and cooperates with people connected by family lines. Helping someone in the past can alter what exists, who is available or what circumstances Wade encounters later. The announced material establishes that earlier actions affect the present, although it has not yet documented the full range of possible historical outcomes.
Psychometry turns objects into progression
Wade’s Psychometry lets him read memories embedded in objects. These visions are more than background lore: they can connect Wade to heroes from previous eras and allow him to inherit their abilities and classes. An artifact may therefore serve simultaneously as a story clue and a way to expand Wade’s combat options.
The published descriptions do not yet specify how many classes exist, how often abilities can be changed or whether every object has a gameplay reward. Those details will determine how flexible the progression system feels.

Is Eternal Anima turn-based?
Yes. The announced combat is classic turn-based combat with an added prediction mechanic called Future Sight.
Future Sight predicts the battle sequence
Future Sight allows Wade to inspect upcoming enemy actions before committing to a command. Players can then choose actions that delay or cancel an enemy move, changing the order in which turns occur. The result is a battle system built around reading the forecast and deciding when to interrupt it, rather than simply selecting the strongest attack on each turn.
This makes time manipulation practical at the command-menu level. A player may preserve a defensive action, postpone a dangerous attack or cancel a predicted move, depending on the available commands and the visible sequence. The mechanic is publisher-described; no independent testing has established its difficulty, balance or reliability in the final build.

Setting, story and creative team
Urvis Ael’s floating kingdom and the endless sea provide the immediate stakes, while the search across four lost continents supplies the wider structure. The generational premise means Wade’s companions can include both ancestors and descendants, linking personal relationships to the consequences of historical decisions.
The announced core team includes:
- Katsuhisa Higuchi, director
- Keisuke Makino, story concept writer
- Kazushige Nojima, scenario writer
Their involvement is a notable signal for JRPG fans, but credits alone cannot establish how the finished narrative or combat will perform.

- How much can the player change history? Eternal Anima confirms that actions in earlier eras affect the present, but the breadth of branching outcomes is not yet documented.
- Do time mechanics alter character builds? Yes. Psychometry can provide abilities and classes inherited from past heroes.
- Does prediction affect individual turns? Yes. Future Sight exposes upcoming actions and supports commands that delay or cancel moves.
- How customizable is the party? The available material centers on Wade and does not yet establish the full scope of party customization.
That combination gives Eternal Anima a distinct design pitch: history changes the world, artifacts change the protagonist and prediction changes the next turn.
What remains unknown before launch
- The complete class, ability and equipment roster
- The number of playable companions and the extent of party customization
- How many historical outcomes are possible
- PC hardware requirements and technical options
- Final balance, performance, localization and launch quality
Until those details are published or independently tested, Eternal Anima is best understood as a promising announced RPG rather than a proven finished game.
The Bottom Line
Eternal Anima stands out because its three headline ideas reinforce one another: Psychometry makes the past part of character growth, historical actions reshape the present and Future Sight turns every turn-based battle into a prediction puzzle. Its March 4, 2027 release on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam will show whether that ambitious design works as well in play as it does on paper.
