ETERNAL ANIMA is a new turn-based JRPG from Marvelous, launching worldwide on March 4, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Producer Makoto Shioda and director Katsuhisa Higuchi describe a game built around two linked ideas: reading the past through objects and changing the future through deliberate turn-based commands.
ETERNAL ANIMA release date and platforms
Marvelous has scheduled ETERNAL ANIMA for March 4, 2027, with a worldwide release planned for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Marvelous Japan’s release information lists the U.S. Steam release for March 5 at 3:00 a.m.; the supplied announcement does not state a time zone for that listing.

The game is unreleased, so campaign length, endgame balance, final performance and the total scope of its time-travel changes have not been established.
How Future Sight Battles work
Future Sight is ETERNAL ANIMA’s defining combat system. At the beginning of each turn, Wade can see when enemies are expected to act and what outcome their displayed actions are predicted to produce. The information is not merely a warning: the player can select commands that alter the forecast.

Rewrite the turn instead of simply reacting
A command can prepare for an incoming attack, make Wade or an ally act first, delay an enemy action or cancel it altogether. The battle therefore presents a forecast that can be rewritten before the turn resolves. Winning is less about absorbing a fixed sequence of attacks and more about identifying which event must be prevented and spending the right command to change it.
Break can move enemy actions
A hands-on report from an approximately one-hour media session describes Future Sight interacting with the Break system. Hitting an enemy’s weakness can push its planned action later, giving the party an opening to reorder the turn. The same report says a mistake can cost a character’s life, underscoring the system’s intended tension. This observation comes from early preview content, not a review of the finished game.
Director Higuchi’s battle priorities are unusually explicit. In the interview coverage, he is quoted saying, “RPGって7割8割バトルだと僕は思ってた” (“I used to think an RPG is 70 or 80 percent battle”). He qualified the remark by explaining that battle is the element that determines how interesting an RPG is, which is why the team treated it as a particularly demanding design problem.

Psychometry, inherited classes and personal builds
Wade’s Psychometry lets him read memories held in objects. Those memories connect him to heroes from earlier eras and allow him to inherit their jobs or classes and skills. Players can combine inherited abilities to create an individual battle style rather than following a single fixed progression.
This inheritance system ties character growth to the story’s central question: what should one generation preserve, change or pass on? It also gives the time-travel premise a mechanical purpose. The past is not only a setting to visit; it supplies the abilities that shape Wade’s options in the present.
How the time-travel story changes the present
ETERNAL ANIMA moves between two eras and four lost continents. Marvelous summarizes the premise with the line, “To free the present, one must save the past…” Actions taken in an earlier era can alter the world that Wade returns to, and the resulting present can open encounters with descendants of people met in the past.

A concrete example from the interview
Higuchi describes a ruined continent that is destined to sink. If the player visits its past and saves it, the present is no longer the same ruined landscape: the continent survives, and descendants of the companions encountered there can become party members. This is a direct cause-and-effect loop rather than a purely visual flashback.
The director says other player-driven changes are being held for later announcements. The available material therefore confirms meaningful consequences but does not establish how many branches exist, whether every continent can be saved, or how far the altered timelines extend through the campaign.
The White City and the cost of a peaceful future
One major setting is the White City, a society in which wanting a better future is treated as a serious crime. Its ruler, known as the Almighty, rejects human wisdom and inheritance. The city’s peace is therefore also a constraint: Wade’s challenge is to question a system that has removed conflict by forbidding people from pursuing change.

What the producers say about the project
The supplied interview title identifies the producer as Makoto Shioda. His Japanese name is 塩田誠, but the publisher has not provided a definitive English romanization in the reviewed first-party material, so “Makoto Shioda” should be treated as the supplied spelling rather than a confirmed official English form. The director is identified in Japanese as 樋口勝久 and in English as Katsuhisa Higuchi.
An “adult” team making its own JRPG
Shioda says the project began after he wrote a proposal for a JRPG and Higuchi found it interesting. The team then set out to make the kind of JRPG they themselves wanted to play. They chose inheritance as a central theme because adults can respond to it through lived experience: everyone has received ideas, obligations or skills from earlier generations and must decide what to do with them.

The developers fixed two foundations at the start: an overhead dramatic story and turn-based command battles. As the narrative developed, the tone became more adult. That combination explains the game’s structure: a strategic battle system built around visible consequences, paired with a story about authority, memory and responsibility across generations.
