A sky city, a drowned world and a fixed-looking future
Eternal Anima takes place in Urbis Ael, a city suspended above an endless sea. The four main continents have already disappeared beneath the water, while the city’s rulers punish anyone who calls for change or imagines a better future.

Wade is branded a rebel and heretic. He leaves Urbis Ael and enters the forbidden sea to discover what happened to the sunken continents. His journey moves across different points in history: by reaching the past, he can investigate civilizations before their disasters and attempt to alter the present they create.
#1 Best Overall
- Bold New Abilities and Weapons; As an Earth Dancer, use the power of dance, sacred treasures, and fresh weapons to undo Blight's damage
- It Takes a Village; Mind the farm, rebuild entire villages, and revive the gods
- Your Fantasy Japanese Life; Experience Japanese-inspired character designs from festivals and events to monsters
- Romance and Relationships; Choose male & female protagonists, then befriend or romance the eligible candidates
- Recruit these new friends to aid you in battle, too
That setup frames the game’s main dramatic question: can Wade change the world’s fate, or will history repeat its supposedly inevitable ending?
How Eternal Anima’s main systems work
Psychometry turns objects into character progression
Wade can read memories embedded in objects through a system called Psychometry. In one example, touching an old bow reveals the story of a dead archer. The discovery also unlocks the Bowhunter class.
This makes equipment more than a collection of statistical upgrades. A weapon or other object can carry a history, reveal information about the world and grant a new combat identity. The system also points to an equipment-driven approach to class inheritance rather than a party in which every character is locked permanently to one role.

- A Tale of Emotion Versus Reason - Follow the journey of Velvet as she embarks on a journey of vengeance towards the murderers of her brother, torn between the person she was and the path her rage has set before her. Can she hold onto who she was, or will vengeance consume all that remains?
- Exhilarating Battle System - Customize your skills to create unique playstyles and defeat your foes by unleashing a flurry of attacks. Engage in exhilarating battles by stealing “Souls” from your enemies to empower your combos.
- A Modern, High-Quality Retelling - Play with new quality-of-life updates, including destination icons, the ability to toggle encounters, early grade shop access, and more.
- An All-Around Experience - Enjoy the immersion with the DLC*, which was launched alongside the original release, including costumes, useful items, and other fun extras.
Future Sight shows the battle that is about to happen
Combat remains turn-based, but Future Sight adds a forecasting layer. Wade can see when enemies are expected to act and the predicted result of each turn. He can then change commands to prepare for those actions or prevent them.
The practical promise is planning rather than reaction: a player might alter the order of attacks, choose a defensive command before a known hit, or target a threat whose forecasted action would otherwise disrupt the party. Whether those predictions produce deep tactical decisions or mainly add more menu information will be an important question for later coverage; current previews establish the system’s purpose, not its full range of encounters.
Opening Strike, guarding and breaking feed ability resources
The previewed battles include an Opening Strike bonus for attacking first. Guarding, breaking enemies or defeating them generates points that power abilities. Enemies far below the party’s strength can sometimes be defeated instantly, allowing exploration to move quickly instead of forcing repetitive battles.

- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: "Graphics Mode" prioritizes 4K high-resolution graphics; "Performance Mode" prioritizes smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customizable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
- Play the brand-new episode featuring Yuffie and experience new combat and gameplay additions
Together, these rules create a loop in which initiative, defense and exploiting weaknesses matter beyond simply reducing an enemy’s health bar.

| Character | Role or known contribution |
|---|---|
| Wade | Protagonist; uses Psychometry, Future Sight and class abilities gained through equipment. |
| M.O.S. | Robot companion whose name expands to Magick-Operated Sentinel. |
| Neria | Expedition leader accompanying Wade in the previewed section. |
| Martii | Later party member who adds elemental and healing abilities. |
The currently shown group suggests a conventional JRPG balance of offense, utility and support, while the class-unlocking system may let equipment reshape how individual members contribute.
What makes it distinct from other modern JRPGs
Traditional turns instead of action combat
Eternal Anima uses command-based, turn-by-turn battles rather than real-time action. Its distinctive combat hook is therefore not speed of execution but the ability to inspect an approaching turn and revise the party’s plan.
Rank #4
- The Last Remnant for the Xbox 360 is the first role-playing game in a new series from Square Enix
- Breathtaking visuals, a mysterious storyline, and a massive battlefield provide hours of exciting gameplay
- Battles are fought between multiple friendly and enemy unions -- groups of up to five characters
- Commands change depending on the current battle situation or the distance and positions of friendly and hostile unions
- In Deadlock gameplay, the two unions must fight each other until one union has been completely destroyed
Time travel as the story’s operating system
Many games use time travel as a plot twist or a single excursion. Here, moving between past and present is tied directly to the objective: save civilizations before their catastrophes so the present can change. The setting makes historical repair the main narrative engine.
Classes discovered through objects
Instead of presenting every job as a fixed choice made at the start, Psychometry links class discovery to the memories of physical objects. The Bowhunter example shows how a personal story can become a gameplay option.
Future Sight still needs to prove its depth
Future Sight is the system most likely to determine whether battles feel genuinely strategic. Seeing an enemy’s expected action could support careful counterplay, but the available preview does not establish how many ways predictions can be altered, how often they can be trusted, or how much complexity later encounters introduce.

What is known—and what is not
- The game has a defined premise, named developers, demonstrated combat systems and a scheduled launch date.
- No attributable sales forecast, budget, review score, player-count target or other performance statistic has been announced in the available material.
- The full roster, final class list, pricing, language support and detailed edition contents have not been established here.
- The announced systems explain the game’s direction, but only a complete release will show whether changing history has consequences across the whole world or mainly within individual episodes.
Why the premise matters
The publisher positioning describes Eternal Anima as an epic in which “players must save the past to free the present.” That idea connects every major feature: Psychometry gives the past a physical voice, Future Sight exposes a possible future in battle, and Wade’s journey turns historical knowledge into an attempt to change the world.
If those systems remain connected beyond isolated scenes and encounters, Eternal Anima could offer a distinctive answer to a familiar JRPG question: not merely how to defeat the final threat, but whether a doomed future can be rewritten at all.
