EssentialsProtect usually means EssentialsX Protect, the protection add-on bundled with the EssentialsX ecosystem. It is not a standalone plugin: the main EssentialsX module must be installed, and Protect reads its settings from plugins/Essentials/config.yml.
Install both EssentialsX and the Protect JAR, restart the server, then edit the protect: section of the generated configuration. Its controls are grouped into prevent (environmental damage), spawn (mob-spawn restrictions), and disable (mechanics such as fire damage). Save the file and reload EssentialsX or restart the server; use a full restart when a reload does not apply a change.

What EssentialsX Protect does
EssentialsX Protect is an add-on module for EssentialsX servers. Its purpose is to apply broad, server-level rules that stop or disable selected Minecraft mechanics. Common examples include preventing creepers from damaging blocks, stopping fire from spreading, restricting certain mob-spawn methods, and disabling fire damage.
The module is configured through the same EssentialsX configuration used by the core plugin. That arrangement matters when diagnosing a problem: there is no separate Protect configuration directory to edit. The file you need is plugins/Essentials/config.yml, and the relevant settings are under the protect: heading.

Protect is not a region-protection system. Its settings apply as general EssentialsX rules rather than as a map of claims or zones. If a server needs different building, interaction, or damage rules in separate areas, use a region-protection plugin such as WorldGuard alongside EssentialsX Protect.
What you need before installation
- A running Minecraft server with the main EssentialsX module installed.
- The EssentialsX Protect JAR that matches the EssentialsX package you are deploying.
- File-system access to the server’s
plugins/directory and permission to restart the server. - A plain-text or code-aware editor. Notepad++ and Visual Studio Code are suitable because they make YAML indentation easier to see.
- A recent backup of
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlbefore you make changes.
Do not treat Protect as a replacement for the EssentialsX core. Installing only the add-on leaves the required main module missing, so the protection settings will not operate as intended.

- Stop the server or use its normal maintenance procedure. Installing while the server is writing files can leave a partially copied JAR or an incomplete configuration.
- Place the EssentialsX core and Protect JAR in the server’s
plugins/folder. Keep the files in that folder rather than inside a subdirectory. The core module is required even if your immediate goal is only creeper or fire control. - Start the server and allow it to finish loading. On the first successful boot, EssentialsX creates its configuration files, including
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlandplugins/Essentials/kits.yml. - Check the startup log for a successful EssentialsX load. A configuration or dependency error should be fixed before you attempt to tune Protect.
- Use a full restart after adding the JARs. The installation guides specifically advise restarting rather than relying on
/reloadfor a new module. A restart gives the server a clean plugin-discovery cycle and generates the default files.
Verify that the files were generated
After the first boot, open the server’s plugins/ directory and confirm that an Essentials folder exists. Inside it, look for config.yml. If that file is absent, EssentialsX did not complete its first load; investigate the startup error, the JAR location, and the server’s write permissions before editing anything.
Find the Protect settings in config.yml
- Open
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlin a code-aware editor. - Use the editor’s search function for
protect:. - Edit the existing block rather than creating a second
protect:heading elsewhere in the file. - Preserve the indentation and the option names supplied by your generated configuration.
One guide places the section at approximately line 935, but line numbers change between EssentialsX versions and edited files. Searching for protect: is therefore safer than jumping to a fixed line.

The generated block is divided into three conceptual areas:
| Section | What it controls | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
prevent |
Environmental block or entity damage | Prevent creeper block damage or fire spread |
spawn |
Which mobs may be spawned through supported methods | Restrict abuse of spawn eggs |
disable |
Whether selected mechanics are turned off | Disable fire damage with the firedmg option shown under disable: |
The configuration documentation identifies the groups and the firedmg example, but it does not establish a universal list of every key or each version’s default value. Do not copy an option from an unrelated version without checking that your generated file contains it.

Configure the rules you need
Prevent creeper block damage
To stop a creeper explosion from destroying blocks, use the relevant entry in the prevent subsection. The generated configuration’s comments normally describe what each switch affects. Set the value according to that file’s documented format, save the file, and then apply the change with an EssentialsX reload or a server restart.
This is an environmental rule, not a claim or permission system. It changes how the server handles the selected damage event generally; it does not create a protected region around one player’s house.

Stop fire from spreading
Fire-spread control also belongs under prevent. Find the fire-related setting in the block and change only that setting. Keep neighboring options at their existing values unless you have a separate reason to alter them. Fire spread and fire damage are separate mechanics: preventing spread does not automatically mean players or mobs take no fire damage.
Restrict spawn eggs and other mob spawning
Mob-spawn controls are grouped under spawn. This area is useful on servers where players can use spawn eggs or another supported spawning method to create unwanted mobs. Select the documented mob or spawn control in your generated file and change its value without moving it into prevent or disable.

Because exact keys can differ between releases, treat the comments and names in your installed configuration as authoritative. If a mob is not represented by an available option, Protect may not provide a rule for that case; do not invent a key and expect EssentialsX to recognize it.
Disable fire damage
To turn off fire damage as a mechanic, use the firedmg option under disable:, as shown in the configuration guidance. This is distinct from fire-spread prevention: one governs whether fire propagates, while the other governs damage caused by fire. Decide which behavior you actually want before changing either setting.

Save and apply a configuration change
- Save the file as plain text. Keep the filename
config.yml; do not let an editor append an extra extension such as.txt. - Run the EssentialsX reload command. The documented command is
/essentials reload. Execute it from the console or in game with the required administrative permission. - Test the behavior in a safe area. For example, test a disposable block area for creeper protection or a controlled fire source for fire settings. Do not test destructive rules on a live build.
- Restart the server if the result does not change. Guides warn that a reload may not apply every configuration change. A full restart is the reliable fallback, especially after correcting a syntax error or changing several related options.
A reload is for applying an edited configuration; it is not the preferred installation method for a newly added JAR. When you have installed Protect for the first time, restart rather than relying on /reload.
YAML rules that prevent broken configurations
EssentialsX reads config.yml as YAML, so whitespace is part of the structure. A visually minor formatting mistake can prevent the configuration from loading.
- Use spaces, never tab characters, for indentation.
- Keep child options indented consistently beneath
protect:, and keep each option beneath the correct subsection. - Do not duplicate a heading such as
protect:to avoid searching for the existing block. - Do not remove the colon from a section or key name.
- Preserve comments while learning the file; they often explain the expected value and scope of an option.
- Change one logical group at a time, so a new behavior can be traced to a specific edit.
Before saving, compare the edited lines with nearby entries. If your editor has YAML validation, use it, but still inspect the file manually because a syntactically valid YAML value can be placed under the wrong subsection and therefore have no intended effect.

The Protect settings are missing
Confirm that the EssentialsX core and Protect JAR are both in plugins/, then perform a full restart. If EssentialsX never generated plugins/Essentials/config.yml, resolve the core’s startup or file-permission problem first. Protect depends on that core and its configuration location.

The server reports a YAML or Essentials loading error
Stop editing and restore the last known-good backup. Then inspect the changed area for tabs, inconsistent spaces, missing colons, or a subsection accidentally moved outside protect:. Correct the file with a code-aware editor and restart. A malformed file can prevent EssentialsX from loading its settings, so repeatedly issuing reload commands will not repair the syntax.
A valid-looking change has no effect
First confirm that you edited plugins/Essentials/config.yml, not a similarly named file in another plugin directory. Next check that the option is under the correct group—prevent, spawn, or disable—and that its spelling matches the generated configuration. Run /essentials reload; if the behavior remains unchanged, restart the server because not every change is applied by reload.
Creepers are still damaging a protected build
Check that the creeper-related setting is in prevent and that the server was restarted or successfully reloaded after saving. Then test with a new controlled explosion rather than assuming an earlier explosion reflects the current setting. Remember that Protect is server-wide; it does not provide the per-region priority or ownership rules expected from a region-protection plugin.
Fire behavior is not what you expected
Separate the questions: do you want to stop fire from spreading, stop fire from causing damage, or both? The first belongs to the fire-related rule in prevent; the second uses firedmg under disable:. Changing one does not necessarily change the other. Apply the edit and restart if a reload does not update the test.
Spawn restrictions do not stop every unwanted mob
Review the available entries under spawn in the configuration generated by your installed release. Protect can only enforce controls exposed by that module. If the relevant mob or spawning method is not represented, use a dedicated, compatible control for that requirement rather than adding an undocumented key.
Protect versus region protection
| Requirement | EssentialsX Protect | Region-protection plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Server-wide prevention of selected environmental damage | Designed for this type of broad rule through prevent |
Usually broader than necessary for a single global switch |
| Global spawn or mechanic toggles | Handled through spawn and disable |
Depends on the other plugin’s feature set |
| Different rules in different areas | Not provided | Use a region system such as WorldGuard |
| Configuration location | plugins/Essentials/config.yml |
Separate plugin configuration and region data |
These tools can complement each other. Use Protect for a straightforward server-wide default and a region system when a spawn, minigame arena, survival town, or event world needs exceptions or ownership boundaries.

Safe maintenance checklist
- Back up
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlbefore every significant edit. - Search for
protect:instead of relying on a line number from another release. - Keep the three subsections intact:
prevent, spawn, anddisable. - Use spaces only and preserve indentation.
- Install the core and Protect JAR together, then restart for first-time setup.
- Use
/essentials reloadfor an edit, but restart when the setting does not apply. - Test destructive mechanics in a disposable area.
- Use WorldGuard or another region solution when the requirement is location-specific rather than global.
Final configuration decision
Choose EssentialsX Protect when you need a small set of global safeguards integrated with EssentialsX. Put environmental damage rules in prevent, mob-spawn restrictions in spawn, and mechanic shutdowns such as firedmg in disable. Keep the generated configuration’s exact key names and value format, apply changes with a reload or restart, and move to region protection when one area must behave differently from the rest of the server.
