Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For a new Minecraft server in 2026, begin with Paper and a deliberately small plugin set: EssentialsX for everyday commands, LuckPerms for permissions, and WorldEdit for controlled bulk building. Add CoreProtect for rollback, WorldGuard for protected regions, and spark when you need to diagnose lag. Install Vault only when a shop or economy plugin specifically requires it. Match every plugin jar to the exact Minecraft version your Paper server runs, and verify compatibility on each project’s official page before copying anything to production.
The starter stack at a glance
The following set covers the problems new administrators encounter first: basic player commands, permissions, safe building, grief recovery, region rules and performance diagnosis. You do not need all of them on day one; the “when to add” column reflects a practical rollout.

| Plugin | Primary job | When to add it | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| EssentialsX | Homes, warps and common server utilities | Initial launch | Read its current installation and configuration notes at essentialsx.net/wiki/installing. |
| LuckPerms | Groups and fine-grained permissions | Before inviting players or staff | Do not hand routine staff a blanket wildcard; test a minimal role first. |
| WorldEdit | Fast, large-scale block editing | When you build or maintain maps | Limit access, cap risky operations and back up before major edits. |
| CoreProtect | Inspecting and rolling back block changes | Before opening to the public | It is a recovery tool, not a substitute for preventive region rules. |
| WorldGuard | Protected regions and gameplay flags | When you need spawn, event or build protection | It works alongside WorldEdit; installing one does not replace the other. |
| spark | Profiling CPU, tick and related performance problems | When symptoms appear, or for a controlled baseline | Paper already bundles it, so use the /spark command instead of adding a second jar. |
| Vault | Bridge between economy, permissions and shop plugins | Only when a planned plugin requires the bridge | It is not a prerequisite for EssentialsX, WorldEdit or WorldGuard by itself. |
Choose Paper before choosing plugins
Paper is a performance-focused fork of Spigot with a broader compatibility layer. The 2026 guides consistently select Paper because newer plugins can depend on Paper-specific APIs that are unavailable on a plain Spigot server. That choice affects every later compatibility check: download the Paper build for your chosen Minecraft release, then select plugin versions that explicitly support that same release.
Do not interpret a plugin page mentioning “Paper” as permission to mix versions casually. A jar built for a different Minecraft release may fail during startup, disable features, or appear to work while producing subtle errors. The safe rule is to check the project’s own page for the exact server version, Java requirements and supported platforms immediately before installation. Third-party mirrors are not a reliable compatibility record.

One current guide is written for Minecraft 26.2 on Paper or Purpur, while a MinecraftHub listing says WorldGuard 7.0.19 covers Minecraft 26.3. Those references show how quickly support moves; they are not a guarantee that either version is right for your server. Treat the exact release shown on the project page as authoritative on the day you deploy.
Install in a controlled sequence
A staged installation makes it clear which jar caused a startup error and gives you a recovery point. Work on a copy or a maintenance window rather than changing a busy public server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Record the target. Write down the Minecraft version, Paper build and Java runtime you intend to run. Keep that record with your backups.
- Start a clean Paper instance. Launch it once, accept the EULA through the normal server setup, stop it cleanly and confirm that the basic world loads before adding plugins.
- Install LuckPerms first. It establishes the permission layer that other administrative features can use. Start with a narrow default group and one separate test account.
- Add Vault only if a dependency calls for it. If you have no shop or economy integration planned, leave Vault out. Fewer jars mean fewer compatibility variables.
- Add CoreProtect. Do this before public access so changes made during testing are available for inspection or rollback.
- Use Paper’s bundled spark. Confirm that
/sparkresponds; do not install another copy merely to obtain the profiler. - Add EssentialsX. Follow the current official installation instructions, then test the commands and data storage you actually intend to expose.
- Add WorldEdit and, if needed, WorldGuard. Give WorldEdit only to trusted builders. Configure a small test region before protecting the production spawn.
- Restart and test after each meaningful change. Read the console for disabled-plugin messages, missing dependencies and permission errors before moving to the next jar.
The sequence is an operational method, not a claim that every plugin has a hard dependency on the one before it. Its purpose is to keep failures attributable and to ensure that auditing and permissions exist before players arrive.
What each core plugin contributes
EssentialsX: the everyday command layer
EssentialsX is commonly treated as the foundation of a beginner server because it supplies familiar conveniences such as homes and warps. Without a utility suite of this kind, administrators must assemble many small replacements or expose only the commands built into the server platform. Use the project’s installation wiki for the current file layout and configuration guidance: https://essentialsx.net/wiki/installing.
After installation, test the player-facing workflow with a non-owner account: set and use a home, create and visit a warp, and confirm that commands unavailable to ordinary players remain unavailable. This catches permission mistakes before they become a live-server incident.
LuckPerms: make access intentional
LuckPerms is the permissions layer repeatedly named in current starter guides. Think in terms of capabilities rather than job titles: a builder may need selected WorldEdit actions, a moderator may need inspection and moderation commands, and an owner may retain unrestricted administration. Assign only the nodes each role needs.

- Create a default player group with no administrative wildcard.
- Build a separate moderator or builder group from a short, documented list of permissions.
- Test every group from a non-owner account, including commands that should fail.
- Keep an emergency owner account separate from routine staff accounts and protect its credentials.
A minimal test role is safer than copying an online permissions dump. Wildcards can silently grant destructive commands and make later audits difficult.
WorldEdit: powerful, therefore restricted
WorldEdit turns repetitive block work into large operations, which is invaluable for terrain, schematics and maintenance. The same speed can erase a region in seconds. Restrict it to trusted accounts, set conservative limits where the configuration allows, and make a verified backup before any operation that changes a large area.
Use a disposable test world to learn unfamiliar selections and commands. If an edit goes wrong, stop rather than attempting a second corrective edit over the first; your backup and CoreProtect history are more dependable recovery paths.
WorldGuard: prevent damage in defined regions
WorldGuard protects named regions and changes rules through flags. It is often paired with WorldEdit because WorldEdit is convenient for selecting and defining the area, but the plugins have different jobs. A protected spawn, event arena or staff build can have rules that differ from the unprotected wilderness.

Start with one small region. Test entry, block interaction, container access and any gameplay flags you enable from both a normal player and a staff account. A protection rule that works for an administrator can still block the players it was meant to serve, or accidentally permit an action outside the intended boundary.
CoreProtect: recover after griefing or mistakes
CoreProtect records block activity so an administrator can investigate who changed an area and roll back damage. Install it before opening the server: historical records cannot be reconstructed for changes made before the logger existed. Treat its data as an operational safety net, not as a reason to postpone permissions, backups or preventive region protection.

Document who may inspect logs and perform rollbacks. A rollback is itself a high-impact action, so reserve it for trusted roles and rehearse the procedure in a test world before an emergency.
spark: measure lag instead of guessing
spark is a profiler for diagnosing performance problems. Paper already bundles it, and the command to begin is /spark. When players report lag, collect a profile during the symptom and note what the server was doing at the time: exploration, redstone activity, entity-heavy farms or a large edit can produce very different signatures.
Do not install a second spark jar on a Paper server simply because a setup list includes the name. First confirm that the bundled command responds, then follow the current Paper and spark guidance for producing and interpreting a profile.
When Vault is—and is not—required
Vault is a bridge used by economy, permissions and shop plugins to communicate through a common interface. Some guides describe it as necessary for shops, not as a universal EssentialsX requirement. Install it when a specific economy or shop plugin lists Vault as a dependency; otherwise, leaving it out keeps the stack smaller.
Vault does not create an economy, shop or permission system on its own. You still need the relevant provider plugin, and all components must support the same Minecraft and server platform versions. If a shop fails to recognize balances or groups, check the provider’s dependency list and startup log before changing unrelated plugins.
Protection, permissions and backups form one safety model
These tools address different failure points:
- LuckPerms limits who can run a command.
- WorldGuard limits what can happen inside a region.
- CoreProtect helps determine what happened and undo block changes afterward.
- Backups provide recovery if the world, configuration or plugin data is damaged beyond a safe rollback.
Using only one layer leaves a gap. A protected spawn does not stop an over-permissioned staff account from editing elsewhere; a rollback log does not prevent damage; and a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Schedule backups outside the plugin installation process, keep at least one copy away from the live server, and periodically verify that a restore is usable.

Keep the plugin list small while you learn
A clean Paper server with LuckPerms, CoreProtect, spark and EssentialsX is easier to debug than a 70-plugin stack copied from another community. Every additional jar adds possible configuration conflicts, event interactions, startup time and another update stream. Add a plugin only when you can state the problem it solves and the permission, data and compatibility checks it requires.
Use a simple change log with the date, plugin version, server version, configuration changes and test result. When an update causes trouble, stop the server, restore the last known-good jar and configuration, and test the update in a staging copy before trying again. Never “fix” a startup failure by deleting world or plugin data without a verified backup.
Troubleshoot the failures new administrators see first
The plugin is shown as disabled
Read the first error associated with that plugin in the startup log. Check that the jar is for your exact Minecraft version and platform, that required dependencies are present, and that you have not installed duplicate copies. Remove or replace only the suspect jar, then restart and retest.
A command says you lack permission
Use the test account’s LuckPerms group to trace the missing node. Confirm that the command is enabled in the plugin configuration and that a more specific deny is not overriding the grant. Avoid granting a wildcard merely to make the error disappear.
Players can build where they should not
Verify that the WorldGuard region covers the intended coordinates, that the relevant flags apply to the player group, and that overlapping regions are ordered as intended. Test from an ordinary account at the boundary, not only from an operator account.
A rollback appears incomplete
Confirm that CoreProtect was running when the changes occurred, that you selected the correct world and time range, and that the affected block types are included in the operation. For severe or uncertain damage, stop making further edits and use the most recent verified world backup.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The server feels slow
Use Paper’s bundled /spark profiler while the slowdown is happening. Record the activity and timing, then address the largest measured contributor instead of adding optimization plugins at random. A profile taken during an idle period cannot explain a lag spike caused by a busy farm or a mass edit.
A practical growth path
Private build phase: Paper, LuckPerms, EssentialsX and WorldEdit are enough to establish the world and test administration. Keep WorldEdit access limited and work from a backup.
Invite-only test: Add CoreProtect before outside testers arrive. Create realistic player, builder and moderator groups, then test every permission from those accounts.
Public launch: Add WorldGuard for spawn and other defined regions. Add Vault only alongside a shop or economy integration that explicitly needs it. Confirm that every jar supports the exact release you publish.
After launch: Use spark when a measurable performance symptom appears, review logs and backups regularly, and update one component at a time in a staging copy. This staged approach gives you a known baseline instead of an opaque collection of interacting plugins.
How to evaluate plugin lists you find online
Consensus is useful for identifying likely starting points, but it is not a substitute for compatibility testing. Several 2026 guides are published by hosting companies with commercial interests, so read their recommendations as starting advice rather than independent endorsements. No named-organisation statistics or independently verified developer quotations establish a “best” universal stack.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For each proposed plugin, ask four questions: Does it solve a problem this server actually has? Does its official page support this Paper and Minecraft version? What permissions and data will it introduce? What is the rollback plan if it fails? If you cannot answer those questions, postpone the installation.
Bottom line for a first deployment
Build on Paper, start with EssentialsX and LuckPerms, and add WorldEdit only with strict access controls and backups. Put CoreProtect in place before public play, use WorldGuard when you need preventive region rules, and rely on Paper’s bundled spark for measured lag diagnosis. Vault belongs only in a stack whose shop or economy component requires it. The safest “essential” list is the smallest one that gives your players the functions you promised and gives you permission control, recovery and evidence when something goes wrong.
