Most computers do not need a hand-picked bundle of “essential” drivers. On a Windows PC, start with Windows Update, then install a driver from the computer or hardware maker only if a device is missing, malfunctioning, or needs a compatible update. The right driver depends on the exact hardware and operating system; installing every available package is not a reliable way to make a computer faster.
What drivers do you need to install on a new PC?
A driver lets Windows communicate with a hardware device. For most Windows 11 PCs, the first step is simply to connect to the internet and run Windows Update: it installs recommended drivers automatically. Windows 10 follows the same driver guidance, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, so check which release you use and plan around that lifecycle change. You do not need to install a separate package for every component just because a new computer contains it. Check whether Windows recognizes the hardware and whether the features you need work. If they do, there may be no reason to seek another driver.

- Identify the device and computer. For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. For separately installed hardware, use the component maker’s support page and confirm the exact model or revision.
- Check Windows Update first. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install recommended updates. To review optional drivers, open Advanced options > Optional updates. Optional driver updates are not installed automatically; select one only when it matches your device and addresses a need.
- Match the package to your system. If Windows Update does not provide the needed driver, download it from the manufacturer’s official website. Confirm it supports your Windows version and system architecture before installing it. Microsoft advises against downloading drivers from unofficial sites. Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions
- Install or update it through Device Manager if needed. Open Device Manager, locate the device, right-click it, choose Update driver, and follow the prompts to browse for the downloaded driver when appropriate. Use the manufacturer’s installer instead if its instructions specify that method.
- Restart if the installer requests it, then verify the device. Check that the hardware and its relevant features work. If the issue remains, revisit the exact model’s support page rather than trying unrelated packages.
Should you install every optional driver or choose the newest date?
No. Optional updates give you a choice, not a requirement to install everything. A driver’s displayed date does not reliably identify the best package: providers use different naming and version conventions, and Microsoft says the date metadata is chosen by the provider. Windows also uses targeting information in driver files to select an intended driver. Prefer a package that matches the exact device and operating system and addresses a real compatibility or functionality need, rather than selecting by date alone. Driver updates can provide compatibility, functionality, or security fixes, but the guidance cited here does not establish a general, measurable speed improvement from installing newer drivers. If a computer feels slow, installing every driver is not a demonstrated performance fix.
What if Windows blocks a driver?
A blocked kernel driver can indicate a signing or security compatibility problem. Windows Code Integrity checks that kernel drivers have integrity and are cryptographically signed by a trusted authority. Check Windows Update for a compatible driver, then check the hardware or software vendor’s official support page for a signed package. Do not disable Windows security protections or substitute a download from a third-party driver site to work around the block. Microsoft’s driver policy may change, so consult its current kernel-mode code-signing policy for current details.

Which drivers apply to Windows running on a Mac with Boot Camp?
Boot Camp is a specific case: Apple’s Windows support software provides drivers for Mac hardware and features such as the keyboard, trackpad, speakers, microphone, camera, display, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Boot Camp Assistant normally opens the installer during Windows setup. If it does not, or a Mac-specific feature is not working, follow Apple’s instructions to download and install the support software. A Mac with an AMD video card may also need an AMD graphics driver update if graphics problems occur in Windows. Apple’s Boot Camp support software guidance
For Apple’s manual download procedure, Apple specifies a USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of capacity, formatted as MS-DOS (FAT). This requirement applies to that Boot Camp workflow, not to ordinary Windows driver installation. Apple’s instructions for downloading Windows support software

What about a Mac that runs macOS?
For a Mac running macOS natively, use Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest macOS version compatible with that Mac model. Software Update finds, downloads, and installs compatible Apple software updates; Windows PC driver packages are not the route for supporting hardware in macOS. Apple’s Software Update instructions
