A new Android phone is safer and lasts longer when you review its defaults before installing a large app library. Start with the Privacy Dashboard and app permissions, then limit location access, decide whether to share usage diagnostics, verify security and updates, enable Adaptive Battery, and tune the screen and background activity. Menu names vary between Android releases and manufacturers, but the Settings search box can find every control.
The choices below apply broadly to Android 12 and later, with notes for Android 13 and newer. They prioritize least-privilege access without breaking navigation, messaging, alarms, emergency functions, accessibility tools, or work apps.
1. Audit every sensitive permission in Privacy Dashboard
Open Settings > Privacy, or on many Android 13 and newer phones, Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy dashboard. Google describes the dashboard as a place to see which apps access data, which permissions they use, and when that access occurs.
Android 12 can show activity from the previous 24 hours; Android 13 can show the previous seven days. Use the longer view to catch apps you do not open often.

Review these permissions first
- Location: Check whether an app needs your position continuously or only during a task.
- Camera and microphone: Remove access from apps that do not clearly need recording or video calls.
- Contacts and calendar: Keep access for communication or scheduling tools that depend on it, but question games, shopping apps, and utilities requesting both.
- Photos and videos: Prefer the narrowest picker or selected-photo option when your Android version offers it.
Tap an app in the dashboard, inspect its recent access, and change the permission if the use does not match the app’s purpose. Repeat the audit after installing a batch of apps rather than waiting for a problem.
2. Give each app the least location access that works
For an individual app, go to Settings > Location > App location permissions (the label may be App permissions) and choose one of four access levels:

On Android 12 and later, turn Use precise location off when an approximate area is sufficient. A weather app may work with an approximate or one-time location, while turn-by-turn navigation normally needs precise location during use. Recheck this setting after an app update, because a new feature can change what access is useful.

You can disable Settings > Location when you do not need location services. This can stop or reduce Maps features, location-based personalization, device-finding services such as Find Hub, location sharing, and earthquake alerts. Emergency location services or your carrier may still transmit location to emergency responders during an emergency call or text, so turning off the switch is not a guarantee that location can never be sent in an emergency.

3. Decide on Usage & diagnostics
Open Settings > Google > All services (sometimes More) > Usage & diagnostics. Turn the option off if you do not want Android usage and device-performance information sent to Google.
Disabling this setting does not stop apps from collecting information under their own privacy policies. It also does not remove essential Android services: Google states that a device can still receive essentials such as a new Android version with Usage & diagnostics turned off. Treat this as one data-sharing decision, not a universal privacy switch.
4. Confirm the phone’s core security controls
On Android 13 and newer, open Settings > Security and privacy. Older releases may show separate Security and Privacy pages. Resolve any warning shown at the top before changing optional settings.

Use a strong screen lock
Set a long PIN or password; use fingerprint or face unlock as a convenience layer only when it is backed by a secure lock screen. Avoid predictable PINs and patterns. The exact biometric options depend on the handset.

Leave Google Play Protect enabled
Play Protect checks installed apps and can warn about harmful software. Do not disable it to install an untrusted package. If you sideload apps for a legitimate reason, keep Play Protect on and remove the package when you no longer need it.
Check account, update, and finding controls
The Security and privacy page links to account security, system updates, device-finding tools, and privacy controls. Open each area and address alerts, especially an outdated security patch, an unprotected account, or a disabled device-finding feature.
5. Install Android and app updates before optimizing further
- Open Settings > System > Software update, or the manufacturer’s equivalent, and install the available Android update.
- Restart if requested, then return to the update page to confirm the installation completed.
- Open Google Play Store > profile picture > Manage apps & device and install pending app updates.
- Revisit permissions after major updates; an update can add a new permission request or change background behavior.
Manufacturers use different labels and may place update controls under About phone or System update. Search Settings for “software update” if the common path is absent. Updates can close security defects and fix battery problems, so do this before judging the phone’s endurance.

6. Turn on Adaptive Battery and keep optimization enabled
Look under Settings > Battery for Adaptive Battery and enable it when available. For best results, keep Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization on unless a specific app demonstrably needs an exception.

Optimization limits background work and can delay an infrequently used app’s notifications or synchronization. That delay is an intentional battery-versus-responsiveness trade-off, not necessarily a fault.
When an exception is justified
- Messaging or calling apps whose notifications arrive late.
- Alarm, timer, medical-alert, or safety apps that must run on schedule.
- Navigation or tracking apps during an active trip or exercise session.
- Accessibility services and work-profile apps required by your employer.
Change only the affected app: Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > App battery usage, then choose the available unrestricted or optimized option. The labels differ by manufacturer. Restore optimization when the task ends.
7. Reduce display and input battery drain
The screen is often the most visible source of consumption. In Settings > Display:

- Use a comfortable but lower brightness, or enable Adaptive brightness.
- Try Dark theme, particularly on an OLED display; the effect depends on the screen technology and the apps you use.
In Settings > Sound & vibration and your keyboard settings, turn off keyboard sounds and haptic vibration if they add no value. Keep vibration for calls or alerts if you rely on it; removing every vibration is not required for a useful saving.

8. Find and limit battery-heavy apps
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. The list shows which apps and system components consumed the most power over the selected period. Look for an app that remains near the top despite little active use.
Use a measured response
- Open the high-use app’s battery details and identify whether the drain is foreground, background, or caused by unusually long screen time.
- Restrict background use for an app that does not need continuous sync.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use; removing their background jobs is safer than repeatedly force-stopping them.
- Remove unused accounts under Settings > Passwords & accounts or the equivalent account page, because synchronization can continue for every account.
Do not aggressively restrict messaging, alarms, navigation, accessibility, or work-profile apps. Restriction can stop notifications, break scheduled tasks, interrupt route updates, or violate workplace requirements. If an app suddenly stops working after optimization, return its battery setting to optimized or unrestricted, depending on which behavior the app needs, and test again.
A practical first-day setup sequence
These steps minimize rework and make it easier to identify a problem:

- Set a strong PIN or password, enroll biometrics, and confirm Play Protect and device finding are active.
- Open Privacy Dashboard and remove unnecessary camera, microphone, contacts, calendar, photos, and location access.
- For location-enabled apps, choose while-in-use, ask-every-time, or approximate access before considering all-the-time precise access.
- Choose whether to share Usage & diagnostics; remember this does not control third-party app collection.
- Enable Adaptive Battery and leave normal per-app optimization on.
- Shorten screen timeout, enable adaptive brightness, and disable input sounds or haptics you do not need.
- After two or three days of normal use, review Battery usage and adjust only the apps that are actually consuming excessive power.
Why menus differ on Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other phones
Android’s release and the manufacturer’s software skin can change both the label and the location of a control. Android 13 and newer commonly combine Security and Privacy; older versions may separate them. Adaptive Battery, battery optimization, and permission pages can also move between Battery, Apps, and Privacy.
Use the Settings search field for privacy dashboard, location, usage & diagnostics, adaptive battery, battery optimization, or software update. If a control is unavailable, the phone’s Android version or manufacturer may not support that exact feature; do not substitute an unrelated setting with a similar name.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Disabling every permission immediately: Some apps will fail or lose important safety functions. Reduce access based on what the app actually does.
- Using “Allow all the time” by default: Start with while-in-use or ask-every-time and grant continuous access only when necessary.
- Restricting every background app: This can break alarms, accessibility, work profiles, and messaging.
- Assuming Usage & diagnostics controls all tracking: Apps still operate under their own privacy policies.
- Turning off system updates to save power: Updates address security and reliability problems and should be installed.
- Judging battery life from the first hour: Initial setup, restores, indexing, and updates can temporarily raise consumption. Use Battery usage after normal activity has resumed.
