The board most likely behind the “$5 ESP32-S3” headline is Waveshare’s ESP32-S3-Zero, a compact castellated module built around Espressif’s ESP32-S3 microcontroller. Espressif specifies the chip for dual-core operation at up to 240 MHz; Waveshare’s current product page shows the board at $5.49–$7.99 depending on memory and header options, rather than a universal $5 price. If you need pins ready for breadboard wiring, Espressif’s ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is the more suitable form factor.
What is the “$5 ESP32-S3” board?
The closest match is the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Zero. That identification is likely, not certain, because the headline does not name a manufacturer or model. Waveshare describes the board as a castellated module suitable for surface-mount applications. Its compact footprint and onboard ceramic antenna make it a candidate for soldering onto a carrier board, not a conventional development kit designed around easy breadboard connections.
Waveshare’s product page lists a displayed price range of $5.49–$7.99. The selected memory configuration and whether headers are pre-soldered affect the option and price, so check the exact variant before ordering. Amazon availability for this specific board has not been verified.
Does the ESP32-S3 really run at 240 MHz?
Yes. Espressif specifies the ESP32-S3 as a dual-core Xtensa LX7 microcontroller capable of running at up to 240 MHz. This is a manufacturer specification, not a measured application benchmark. Whether a project performs well depends on its workload, software, and memory demands.
#1 Best Overall
- 🔥【Dual Mode & High Performance】 The ESP32-S3 development board features integrated dual-core xtensa 32-bit LX7 microprocessor, clock speed up to 240 MHz, with 16MB Flash and 8 MB PSRAM. Perfect for Arduino IoT projects requiring stable wireless communication with ultra-low power consumption.
- 🔧【Easy Programming & Debugging】 Equipped with dual USB Type-C ports, this ESP32-S3 board supports both USB and UART modes for effortless programming, firmware flashing, and debugging.
- 🌐【Versatile Wireless Connectivity】 Built-in Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and Bluetooth 5.0 (LE) dual-mode ensure seamless connectivity with a wide range of smart devices, making it ideal for IoT, smart homes projects.
- 🚀【Flexible Download Options】 Supports dual download methods — USB direct download or USB-to-serial download — offering flexibility and convenience for different development needs.Ideal for beginners and developers working with ESP32-S3.
- 🔋【Advanced Power-Saving Modes】 Designed for energy-efficient applications, with 3.3V SPI voltage, the ESP32-S3 board supports multiple low-power modes, allowing you to extend battery life based on different usage scenarios.
Espressif also lists 512 KB of internal SRAM, integrated 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5 LE, and 45 programmable GPIOs for the chip. It supports vector instructions intended for neural-network computing and signal processing, but those capabilities do not guarantee that a particular model or signal-processing workload will fit or run quickly enough.
The chip specification is not the same as a complete board bill of materials. For example, Espressif’s ESP32-S3-MINI-1 / MINI-1U module datasheet, version 1.7, describes module features including 384 KB ROM and 512 KB SRAM and notes different flash and PSRAM configurations across the module family. Those module-family details should not be treated as an exact inventory for every third-party board.

- ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8 SPI voltage: 3.3v, ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is an entry-level development board equipped with Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module ESP32-S3
- Most of the I/O pins on the module are broken out to the pin headers on both sides of this board for easy interfacing. Developers can either connect peripherals with jumper wires or mount ESP32-S3-DevKitC on a breadboard.
- The ESP32-S3-DevKitC development board equipped with ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8, a general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth LE MCU module that integrates complete Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE functions.
- ESP32-S3-N16R8 cable can be used: USB Type A to Type-C cable or CC cable Note the distinction between the commonly used USB A port to Type-C cable that can only be charged, which cannot be used for communication between YD-ESP32-S3 and the host.
- USB-to-UART Port and ESP32-S3 USB Port (either one or both), default power supply (recommended)
Which board is easier to wire?
Choose according to how you plan to mount and connect it. The ESP32-S3-Zero’s castellated design is aimed at compact integration; Espressif’s ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is the more practical choice when exposed pins for breadboard or jumper-wire work matter most.

What to check before choosing the ESP32-S3-Zero
- Memory: Select the flash and PSRAM combination that fits the project. The listed 4 MB flash / 2 MB PSRAM and 8 MB flash / 8 MB PSRAM options are materially different.
- Pin access: Decide whether you need a compact soldered module or pins that are convenient for breadboards and jumper wires. The ESP32-S3 chip’s 45 programmable GPIOs do not mean every board exposes all of them in an equally accessible layout.
- Headers: Check whether the chosen option comes with pre-soldered headers or requires soldering.
- Price and availability: Verify the selected variant’s displayed price and stock at purchase time. The listed range is not a claim that every configuration costs $5.
Board dimensions, connector details, included cable, power draw, and measured performance are not established by the cited product information here. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact variant and application requirements rather than inferring those details from the ESP32-S3 name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you choose?
Pick the ESP32-S3-Zero if you want a small castellated board for soldering into a custom carrier design and have confirmed the memory and header configuration you need. Pick the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 if accessible pins for prototyping are more important than a compact footprint. In either case, treat 240 MHz as the chip’s maximum manufacturer specification—not a promise of a particular project’s speed.
