Choose the ESP32-S3 when your project can use its vector-instruction acceleration for supported neural-network or signal-processing workloads. Choose the ESP32-C6 when you need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6 or IEEE 802.15.4 for Thread or Zigbee. For Matter, either may fit: S3 is suited to Matter over Wi-Fi, while C6 can support Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread. The right choice depends on the project’s workload, radio and device role—not a blanket claim that one chip is faster or better.
ESP32-S3 vs ESP32-C6: What is the practical difference?
The key distinction is between workload-oriented MCU features and radio capabilities. Espressif specifies a dual-core Xtensa LX7 MCU for S3, with vector instructions that accelerate supported neural-network computing and signal processing. C6 combines a high-performance and low-power 32-bit RISC-V core design with Wi-Fi 6 and IEEE 802.15.4 radios. These specifications do not, by themselves, predict the speed of a particular application.
| Decision point | ESP32-S3 | ESP32-C6 |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Dual-core Xtensa LX7 MCU, up to 240 MHz | 32-bit RISC-V cores; product specifications list the high-performance core up to 160 MHz and the low-power core up to 20 MHz |
| Neural-network and signal-processing support | Vector instructions provide acceleration for supported workloads; Espressif names ESP-DSP, ESP-NN, ESP-WHO and ESP-Skainet | The reviewed product description does not describe the same S3 vector-instruction feature |
| Wireless | 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 LE | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5 LE and IEEE 802.15.4 |
| Memory and programmable GPIO | 512 KB internal SRAM and 45 programmable GPIOs listed on the product page; external flash and PSRAM configurations vary | 512 KB SRAM and 30 or 22 programmable GPIOs, depending on package |
| Matter use cases | Matter Wi-Fi device development | Matter Wi-Fi endpoint and Thread endpoint development; also described for multi-chip gateway, router and bridge solutions |
Figures and capability descriptions in the table are Espressif manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results. See the ESP32-S3 product page and ESP32-C6 product page for the families’ current descriptions.
When should you choose ESP32-S3?
Choose S3 for supported on-device AI or signal processing
Espressif attributes S3’s acceleration to vector instructions in the MCU. Its product page names ESP-DSP and ESP-NN, along with ESP-WHO and ESP-Skainet, as part of the software ecosystem. This is not evidence of a separate, dedicated neural accelerator, nor a guarantee that a particular model will fit or run at a given speed. Check memory needs and measure the actual implementation on the intended module or board.

Choose S3 when its peripherals and pins fit the design
The S3 product page lists 45 programmable GPIOs, but that figure is not a promise that every board exposes all of them for your use. Package, module, board routing and other functions affect which pins are available. Verify the exact board documentation alongside the chip specifications.
When should you choose ESP32-C6?
Choose C6 when you need Wi-Fi 6 or 802.15.4
C6’s distinguishing radio combination is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 LE and IEEE 802.15.4. The Wi-Fi 6 specification here is for the 2.4 GHz band; it does not mean 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The 802.15.4 radio supports project paths involving Thread or Zigbee, making C6 a natural candidate when that connectivity is a requirement.

- ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8 SPI voltage: 3.3v, ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is an entry-level development board equipped with Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module ESP32-S3
- Most of the I/O pins on the module are broken out to the pin headers on both sides of this board for easy interfacing. Developers can either connect peripherals with jumper wires or mount ESP32-S3-DevKitC on a breadboard.
- The ESP32-S3-DevKitC development board equipped with ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8, a general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth LE MCU module that integrates complete Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE functions.
- ESP32-S3-N16R8 cable can be used: USB Type A to Type-C cable or CC cable Note the distinction between the commonly used USB A port to Type-C cable that can only be charged, which cannot be used for communication between YD-ESP32-S3 and the host.
- USB-to-UART Port and ESP32-S3 USB Port (either one or both), default power supply (recommended)
Check package-specific GPIO and peripheral needs
Espressif lists 30 or 22 programmable GPIOs for C6 depending on package, along with interfaces and functions including SPI, UART, I2C, I2S, RMT, TWAI, PWM and SDIO. Confirm the precise package and board pinout before committing to a design; a family-level feature list does not establish that a particular board routes every function to accessible pins.

No. Matter is not synonymous with Thread. Espressif documents Wi-Fi-capable ESP32-S and ESP32-C series SoCs, including S3, for Matter Wi-Fi devices, and 802.15.4 platforms such as C6 for Matter Thread devices. C6 can serve either Wi-Fi or Thread endpoint development, while the appropriate transport depends on the product’s network design.

- 【Diverse connectivity options】: The ESP32-S3-1 supports dual-mode Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 (LE) connectivity for a wide range of smart devices, making it ideal for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
A chip’s radio capabilities do not make a finished product Matter-compliant or certified. Implementation, product design and applicable certification also matter. Espressif’s ESP-Matter documentation and Matter solution page describe platform use cases; they should not be read as certification of every project built with those chips.
How to make the choice for a real project
- Write down the required transport and role. If you need Thread or Zigbee, C6’s 802.15.4 is the relevant differentiator. If the device uses Matter over Wi-Fi, S3 is also a documented option; C6 supports Wi-Fi endpoint development too.
- Identify compute needs. If neural-network or signal-processing workloads can benefit from S3’s vector instructions and Espressif libraries, start by testing S3. Do not infer application performance from core clock alone.
- Check memory, package and pin requirements. Compare the exact SoC, module and board documentation, including available GPIOs, external memory configuration and peripheral routing.
- Validate the board-level design. Antenna arrangement, USB interface, connectors and power design vary among boards. A chip-family comparison cannot establish which board is best for a particular build.
- Confirm current software and documentation. Espressif’s ESP-IDF documentation index, ESP-Matter documentation and product selector are useful starting points. Check current SDK support and the datasheet revision for the specific part before relying on version-specific instructions.
Why board choice still matters
ESP32-S3 and ESP32-C6 are chip families, not single development-board designs. Memory configuration, antenna, USB support, pin exposure, connectors and power circuitry can differ across modules and boards. Espressif’s product selector lists multiple ESP32 variants, but does not establish one universally suitable third-party board. Before selecting hardware, check that the board uses the intended SoC and that its module, pinout and radio design meet the project requirements.
